The Conservatives need to use the external Twitter accounts because their own accounts are universally derided.
14 years and they have to co-opt government accounts.

RafaistheKingofClay · 22/05/2024 08:18

Yes it’s national ‘be thankful prices aren’t rising as fast as they were’ day again. Presumably they are getting the positives of this one in before the price rises due to the new border checks really start to hit.

We are under threat and only Sunak can protect us.

(or nevermind that we have told the police not to arrest people)

RafaistheKingofClay · 22/05/2024 08:27

As a (half arsed) prepper who definitely did stock up before brexit, it’s sound advice. I just don’t trust why this government are giving it.

DuncinToffee · 22/05/2024 08:41

Rachel Reeves got in there before today's announcement and Hunt's admittance that people won't notice it

I have noticed a lot more empty shelves again lately

Needs to be remembered that inflation has fallen due to energy price cap, food inflation is still around 4%.

So whilst its good prices are rising less fast, they are still going up.

Plus 4% on food that has (in many cases) doubled in price over the last 2/3 years is a very significant amount.... same with council tax, that 5% increase every year is a great deal of money for most people.

DuncinToffee · 22/05/2024 08:47

Paula Vennells, ex post office boss, is giving evidence today. There is a good thread on it in aibu if anyone is interested.

Also not sure you’ll notice the cut if your mortgage payments have nearly doubled.

Or insurances

TBH i'm not sure how on earth they get to these inflation figures... all i see is food prices going up quite significantly, as has motoring costs, inc fuel... so what if the price of Sofas has fallen....

CPIH is considered more accurate and has not moved, 3.8% from last month.

On the basis that this government never do something for the good of the public without reason WTF is going on here?

Profits for Tory mates, innit ?

L1ttledrummergirl · 22/05/2024 09:12

Or if your adult dc are still living at home because the interest rises mean they can no longer borrow enough to buy even a one bedroom flat in your are- having previously looked at 2 bed houses.

Although new builds with additional rent and service charges meaning the monthly cost is more than just a mortgage on an older house, are deemed affordable. I wonder why?

For those not on twitter, her second post reads

DPM will cite polling by London Defence Conference showing:
• only 15% of people have an emergency supply kit in their homes
• >40% of people do not have three days’ supplies of non-perishable food/water

Govt urges Brits to stock up with 10 litres (!) water per person per day

I have noticed a lot more empty shelves again lately

Which - because shops have to pay the same wages and rates etc etc, is costing you money.

It's not as if the shops aren't dim (or cold) enough as it is.

And my suspicion that climate change is going to lead to weather becoming very up/down certainly feels right. I think this year, we'll notice by October how summer never really got started. Yes, we'll have a couple of nice days. Then the murky damp for a couple of days. Then some sun ...

Not great for the staycationers.

Isn't it still "national spend your entire pension month"? Their buddies who own the supermarkets don't want to pay for advertising, perhaps?

Either 1) they think the new border system is going to be such a disaster we are going to run out of food, 2) they are dog whistling preppers/conspiracy theorists or 3) it's all part of Rishis narrative that the UK is "unsafe"

Feel like this is an appropriate response

Just in time for half term, too. How exciting.
@AdamRyan I think you are right with the boarder controls. They have been so long coming I had lost track. Dd has helpfully used our second freezer for puddings and ice creams, so we will just be sitting here getting fat and defrosting ice for water it seems. I can think of worse ways to go.

Zonder · 22/05/2024 09:59

Did anyone hear Emma B on radio 4 Today interview with Jeremy *unt? She was brilliant and I 😍 her.

She had him over a barrel when he said about wages going up and people having more money. She asked him if, as a minister and a landlord he felt richer. He was damned if he did and damned if he didn't on that one so of course he just had a go at her for not listening to him. But she didn't give up.

BIossomtoes · 22/05/2024 10:04

What time was the interview Zonder? I gave up on Today a while ago but it sounds as if it might be worth listening to again.

Must have been amazing - there's a thread on her started already! Hit some nerves!

pointythings · 22/05/2024 10:07

She's an excellent addition to Today, she doesn't allow weaselling out.
