Yes May 2nd would have been Sunak's best opportunity. Pretty galling for party activists - they've lost nearly 5 hundred local councillors and now have to get back out there.

Sunaks revenge.

A shocking but sadly unsurprising indictment of the government’s devastating mismanagement of the criminal justice system.

Record delays, a record backlog, and absolutely no plan by Rishi Sunak to fix it.

No plan at all.

There has never been a better time to be a criminal.

Home Office staff are already in Rwanda – waiting for flights that may never come

It comes after Sunak confirmed no flights would be setting off prior to the #generalelection

Are they going to wait there on the off chance Sunak wins and a flight arrives?

Anyone else waiting to hear if Sunak is going to be one of the Tories standing down?

IClaudine · 24/05/2024 09:25

Given the chaos and short timescales, it is inevitable that some of those selected as Tory candidates will be Gullis-esque goons with extra unsavoury tendencies.

Hopefully there will be some difficult moments as a result.

I can't see how he can possibly want to stay on as an MP, let alone party leader. His career is in tatters and he's a laughing stock.

True. It would be a huge vote of no confidence in his own party if the PM decided not to stand for reelection though. I can't see him as an opposition MP.

Some of the MN GC do seem to debate in a way that seems to be self defeating and makes you feel inclined to disagree with them.

I can’t find which thread it was on now, but there was the most random drive by ‘bet they know what a woman is’ type comment on a thread earlier this week. It wasn’t a politics thread, or a thread about trans/GC issues or where anyone had even come close to moving onto that topic. It was really odd.

I agree with this. Let the Mnet Tories know what a woman is crew lecture and bore the life out of the rest of us. It won't help them win.Grin

RafaistheKingofClay · 24/05/2024 09:33

The best thing for Rishi at the moment would be to lose his seat. I can’t see how this will work out for him other wise.

Claire Coutinho, minister for net zero, doing a sterling job on Sky News claiming that Sunak flying around the country to meet people in this campaign isn’t going to make a huge difference to emissions. Presumably we can all do whatever we want because our individual contributions are minuscule on a global scale.

Notonthestairs · 24/05/2024 09:35

I can't see Sunak standing down and then spending the next six weeks trying to sell a vision of the Conservatives based on what his successor might^^ offer.

I know their actions have often seemed nonsensical but that would take the biscuit. It would make the manifesto even more of a farce.

I think he'll be like buckland - business interests elsewhere but in London for votes. That's presuming he keeps his seat.

DuncinToffee · 24/05/2024 09:40

Jeremy Corbyn has been expelled from the Labour party

Corbyn announced this morning that he would stand against a Labour candidate as an independent

IClaudine · 24/05/2024 09:46

Well, Corbyn will retain his seat, I have no doubt.

Wonder what is going to happen with Abbott?

Saucery · 24/05/2024 09:51

They are being very reticent to announce a decision about Diane Abbott. Definitely not going to stop me voting Labour, but I think the party’s treatment of her, leaving her in this limbo, is terrible. And I say that as someone who would struggle to agree with her on much!

I agree with you, this should have been sorted ages ago. I how she gets the whip back. I also hope Frank Hester is charged by the police.

Told you! He should have employed me as his advisor. 😂

I think the best response to the agenda driven posts that have sprouted (like mushrooms on shit) is a simple

"Yes Dear"

or

"No Dear"

as appropriate.

I'm thinking of putting together a bland, grey rock reply to post each time. It cheapens the argument.

Piggywaspushed · 24/05/2024 11:23

I'm almost certain Corbyn will win and I, for one, am glad. Apaprently he is an excellent constituency MP. And we do need a representation of voices from the Left, even within or without the Labour party.

Notonthestairs · 24/05/2024 11:34

He was our constituency MP for well over a decade. I didn't see eye to eye with him over a number of issues but fair play he was accessible and he doorstepped and was prepared to have lengthy chats about a range of issues. The last conversation I had with him was regarding the closure of my local Sure Start. I let off a lot of steam and he'd didnt try to talk over me which hasn't always been the case with MPs that I have spoken to.

Saucery · 24/05/2024 11:49

I’ve always had the impression Corbyn works hard for his constituency and people do vote on the basis of that, so it’s a shame for Labour as a party if they have ousted him.
I can’t find a Labour candidate for my constituency yet. They’ve always been a bit……supine about fielding one for here, as the Tory MP has been here for donkey’s years. Can’t say he does much either ( he does at least take the time to answer any correspondence I’ve sent him, very much taking the Party line), but more urban areas were lumped in with his rich landowner area last time the boundaries were redrawn, so Labour doesn’t really get a look in. It would be good if they tried. The last one’s campaign consisted of him standing around in Barbour and a tweed cap, but this constituency will need more than that to encourage a change of vote in many places.
Neigbouring constituency has a Tory MP who has been bothering schools and community groups for the last couple of months, after tumbleweeds since she was elected. I hope her bubble of complacency is well and truly burst on 4th July.
