How is Trump's trial going? I got the impression Tories and Trump have been tied for years and I wonder if he has garnered something that suggests their bond/financial agreement/mutual interests won't be available after 4th July?

Yes I'm now wondering similar after the Farage letter
Maybe that's also why the bots are quieter. Money has stopped flowing.

Eyes on policy exchange. I know I'm a conspiracy theorist.

Agree with pp

Something up

Financial impropriety? Another scandal?

I feel a bit sick

Evenstar · 23/05/2024 12:50

Would he want to quit now to take a new job under the rules that apply to ex PM’s? I saw rumours that Mrs Sunak would like to get the children into new schools in California for the autumn term so it could work well for them.

SerendipityJane · 23/05/2024 12:51

I would be surprised if it doesn’t come out that he was going to lose the Tory leadership or something along those lines.

Doesn't explain the lack of preparation. (Unless he genuinely had no idea how unpopular his is, which is a possibility)

It’ll be something entirely self serving.

Well that goes without saying.

Also seem to be some rumours that this was always the plan and in fact the chaos is designed to put Labour on the back foot.

Which would make sense if Labour hadn't - very publicly - spent the last 5 months preparing for an election whenever

Thing is these decisions are always taken by a tiny group of people so it’s entirely plausible it’s been on the works and they didn’t even bother to inform the Cabinet.

Hanlons razor then.

Rishi going down well in Wales. Look at Andrew RTDavies’ face.

Anyone finding the FWR a bit unfriendly or is it just me. One particular poster seems to think it’s just for feminists like her. 🙄

There are two strands - the sex and gender one and then the general feminist chat one. However, that second one ends up with more of the sex and gender stuff so that are hard to tell apart, I find.

General discussions of female poverty, healthcare inequalities, workplace misogyny etc very rarely get much oxygen on MN at all and even less so on FWR which is such a shame.

This is also true of other inequalities.

They can afford a private plane to fly Mr Sunak there and back again

Or maybe they will be doing a 'Angela Rayner' and living apart together Wink

That's so sad about Figen Murray. How distressing for her and all involved.

It's a possibility. But again, one that doesn't account for the apparent concealment of the date.

The optimal outcome for an election - once you accept he blew his post-Truss, post-Queens death honeymoon - was May 2nd. Who knows - he may have kept the West Midlands mayor and 20 or 30 more seats.

Anyway, speculation about the exact circumstances of the mechanism detracts from the energy needed to ensure come July 5th the Tory party has a stake through it's heart.

When is the latest date that candidates must be announced? There are a lot of standing down seats to be filled

What is the quality of Tory candidates going to be like, given anyone with more braincells than Rish! "what's an umbrella" Sunk knows what the result is going to be?

Why bother standing?

user8800 · 23/05/2024 13:14

Just discussing with dc how on warty the tories are going to find 60 + candidates by 7th June

Reform Tice will be standing in Boston & Skegness

..
And will probably get in

countrygirl99 · 23/05/2024 13:15

@Thingscanonlygetsunk it will be the ones who know the only way they will get a shadow cabinet post on their cv is to be in an opposition party that only just scraped together enough seats to be the opposition. Then a bit down the line they can resign and bold that bit on the cv when angling for well paid non exec posts.

Oh deary, deary me. How to make yourself even less popular in Wales than you already are 🤣

Very happy to see both the Davies numpties looking very uncomfortable.

I hope the prediction of a Tory-free Wales comes true 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Doubtful. The Tories got 76% of the vote there in 2019, he’ll just reduce the majority. It’s odd that he’s chosen such a safe Tory seat, it’s almost as if he doesn’t want to be elected.

The analysis seems to be that despite the optics of the Tories (well, JRM) begging Reform to ride in on a white charger, the reality is that Reform want the Tories to kick out the moderates so that they are indistinguishable. Which is a much better way to do politics. You threaten with zero accountability, and the captive party dances to your tune. Look at how Trump is still running the House.

When we are all long dead (which may or may not be sooner than we all think) someone will spot the irony of spending decades shitting ourselves about the left being infiltrated when all along it was the right we needed to watch.

Like Farage. Much easier to snipe from the outside than actually do anything on the inside.

Vulture Cntral's take on things

Not long after becoming prime minister in October 2022, Sunak helped launch a plan he claimed would "cement the UK's place as a science and technology superpower by 2030."

Backed by over £370 million ($471 million) in new government funding — the kind of small change Jeff Bezos might find under the seat of one of — the government promised to boost infrastructure, investment and skills for the "UK's most exciting growing technologies, from quantum and supercomputing through to AI."

Didn't he say last week he intended to stand again?

That was LAST week. You can't expect it to be true THIS week.

Listening to radio 4 this afternoon it sounds like Penny Mordaunt is revving up to take over. She seems to be the voice of the Tories today.
