Definitely the wrong kind of wage rises. Bung to MPs in form of wage rise, not at all inflationary. All other wage rises, massively inflationary.

Especially if those wage increases are given to teachers, junior doctors or railway workers....Hmm

Sunak: ""I believe very strongly in the traditions of our country. And when prime ministers make important statements like that, they do it on the steps of Downing Street come rain or shine."

As one of the guys on Sky News Press Preview said night (I think it was the lady from the FT rather than Kevin Maguire), "We also have a tradition in this country of using umbrellas." Confused

Tradition ?

Fucking rich coming from the leader of a party that has systematically trashed almost all traditions of public service.

You want traditions, Rish! ? How about a respect for law and not illegally proroguing parliament for starters.

Bigcoatlady · 23/05/2024 10:23

Its a really small thing but listening to Sunak's GE announcement and Starmer's stump speech Sunak talks to 'you' a lot and Starmer refers to 'we' all the time. It's a massive rhetorical difference and it's odd Sunak's advisers haven't pointed it out and told him to stop talking like a CBeebies presenter.

newnamethanks · 23/05/2024 10:29

This is gossip, not verifiable, but am told threats of 'letters are mounting up so, unless you, Rishi, do x immediately', incurred a flounce and possibly petulant announcement of GE. Ie, 'If I'm going, you're all coming with me'. Who knows?

A snippet from the Covid Inquiry

Simon Case says he has only been able to hand over 30 of 39 group WhatsApp chat tranches, as nine were lost as they were being transferred, which he was doing himself. But - all the messages exist from other group members, so are not lost to the inquiry.

Hugo Keith asks why, as head of the civil service, Simon Case didn't get an IT expert/dept to do this. Case can't really explain why.

I saw that.
People are so naive about this stuff. Like thinking Amazon made Alexa to help them. Yeah of course they did. Nothing to do with harvesting data for advertising at all.

I had a pitch from a company the other day at work who said they could send cold marketing email to companies with people browsing for a topic of interest to my company. The email would go to the person most likely to be the buyer, not the browser.

I just thought, great, more advertising spam 🙄. Not subjecting my customers to that

Personally I think AI might completely finish off the Internet as a place for actual humans. Sorry, derail.

This is totally off the subject but AI has decimated my industry.

I’ve been a freelancer for 14+ years and always had an abundance of work, had to turn loads down.

Now we’re all fighting over scraps - I reckon about 80% of the work is now done by AI. I think what’s left will probably always remain but it’s a shadow of what it was. I’m lucky to have got in when I did as I have established clients - not sure how anyone new will fare.

We don’t have Alexa as I don’t trust the tech and never have. It feels a bit tinfoil hat to say that 😂😂

A poster on another thread claims that Labour has previously lost an election despite a 20 point lead six weeks before polling day.😭😭😭

I can believe that scenario. I suppose we will never know for sure.

SerendipityJane · 23/05/2024 10:42

I had a pitch from an AI wannabee. I asked them to ask their "model" to remove all the ads from my browser. They left a few minutes later.

There is a laundry list of things that AI simply can't do. You need to have recourse to that when they suits start selling. Because it's a fuck sight longer than the list of things it can do.

Anyone finding the FWR a bit unfriendly or is it just me. One particular poster seems to think it’s just for feminists like her. 🙄

pointythings · 23/05/2024 10:50

@Lottelenya I avoid that board now. It isn't a place for any feminist who wants to look more widely than just gender.

Fun to go on there and annoy them now n again!

Seriously though, i ve a pretty wide circle of friends and have yet to meet anyone who is remotely worried about TWAW.....

Its a complete non issue

newnamethanks · 23/05/2024 10:53

Agreed @Lottelenya, reason has left the building on that thread.

my pay rise causes inflation, other people’s is a good thing. Or something.

I’m guessing that any discussion into the April 2024 NHS pay rise is stopped until after the election.

It's an irregular verb, isn't it ?

That's not a sustainable strategy, given how few councillors the Tories have.

fabio12 · 23/05/2024 11:01

Re AI - I think there is something to be said for the fact that women, in my experience anyway, seem to be far more adept at recognising AI. I see often on here women pointing out trolls/odd posts that seem fabricated. I'm sure it's not just me who can tell the men after a few posts either.

Men however, as the Ashley Maddison debacle shows, are frequently engaging in chat with AI and even think they might get sex from them. I see this on here when a troll gets into a loop with AI.

So for that reason I do think AI is going to impact the human race in ways we've not fully imagined. The time wasted vs time gained is likely a huge red herring.

Edited to apologise for continuing the derail (I'll stop now!)

I reckon the worst thing any journalist could do to Rishi right now is to keep bringing up that D:Ream moment. The British love someone who can laugh at themselves and he’s just going to get tetchier and tetchier until he loses his shit.

May was a terrible PM and there’s a hundred memes of her and the dancing queen thing but I think an awful lot of people respect the fact she was taking the piss out of herself by doing it. Rishi just can’t do that.

Really? When was that election?

I really want to know if we’re going to make Rwanda give our money back.

RafaistheKingofClay · 23/05/2024 11:15

As far as I’m aware I don’t think we can make them give it back. We can ask but there’s nothing in the agreement that obliges them to. Because we are brilliant at negotiations.

Bigcoatlady · 23/05/2024 11:24

Slight derailment - but in his eagerness to get his big GE announcement underway not only did Rishi forget his umbrella yesterday he also forgot he'd had a meeting with Figen Murray and promised to pass Martyn's law in this Parliament. That's now a job for the next government. She had walked 200miles from Manchester to Downing St to see him on the anniversary of the Manchester bombing.
