Dd starts secondary school in September and for the first time has to wear a tie.

Now luckily, the school provide clip one cos I don’t have a clue how to do them. Never had to wear a tie before.

Yup, wore a proper tie since age 5 until year 5 of secondary, then in 6th form it was more relaxed, and we didn’t need to wear a tie. I found it off that my kids didn’t wear one until 6th form. It was a complete flip from the chilled time we had at 6th form.

You just loop the thick end twice over the thin end, tuck it in then pull to adjust.

Yes, I can tie a tie as I wore one to school for years. I know a couple of different knots for added interest too! I can also tie a bow tie for a gentleman's evening wear. Wink Wink

Yes, it's like tying shoe laces. You learn, you do it every day then it's muscle memory. My kids all wore a tie from age 5 onwards at school and tied them themselves and one of them is very uncoordinated so am sure your's would be fine.

I do. I had to wear one at secondary school. Absurd really, I’ve never ever seen a woman in a tie. A useless skill for me, as per my username, no sons to pass it on to.

I wore one from age 5 throughout school. My dd is now in year 5 and has started wearing one.

Luckily I did, when my son started I panicked as I’ve not worn a tie since school can do it on myself so taught him and did it on me the first few days and showed how to loosen without undoing for pe until he got the hang, was surprised I remembered though.

I learned in y2 (as it wasn't back then) as it was part of my infant's uniform. Didn't need to wear one at my juniors which was a seperate school. Had to wear a house tie at secondary.

I did develop the knack of tying a tie in my hands for pupils to put on their heads which tended to impress them before clip-ons became the default.

I do find it daft in the morning when DH goes out to work in his open shirt and jumper, and DS goes out looking like a yuppie missing only a breeze block phone with pull-out aerial.
