Dd starts secondary school in September and for the first time has to wear a tie.

Now luckily, the school provide clip one cos I don’t have a clue how to do them. Never had to wear a tie before.

The only time in my life when I've worn a tie was when I went to a horse show aged about 11. My school uniform didn't include a tie.

cardibach · 26/04/2024 15:55

Not just ordinary ties. I can hand tie a bow tie <preens>
(cones from having a musician exH)

Yes, we had to wear them from aged 4yo.

Mine only had to wear them in juniors. Dd1 and dd2(who only has one hand) learnt within a couple of times of being shown. Ds refused to learn and used a clip on one.
They all thought going to the secondary with no ties was a good thing.

Yes, I wore a tie through the whole of school. Primary included.

DS had to wear one in high school, too, and he tied his tie for prom nicely.

Allshallbewell2021 · 26/04/2024 16:03

Yes as I wore one at school for years.

RancidOldHag · 26/04/2024 16:06

Yes, it was part of my school uniform from yr3 onwards.

It's dead easy, and there are loads of YouTube tutorials

Clip on/elastic ones are widely seen as rather naff, so unless the school has a policy of actively encouraging them (some do, as then the little darlings can't attempt to strangle each other readily), then go for a proper one.

usernother · 26/04/2024 16:13

Yes. It's very easy once you get the hang of it.

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 26/04/2024 16:19

You tube is your friend on this.

TonTonMacoute · 26/04/2024 16:20

Yes, learnt when I was five, we had to wear one at primary school. Had to tie up shoe laces too. DS can tie bow ties.

To be honest it's not exactly hard to learn.

IaltagDhubh · 26/04/2024 16:22

Yep. Every day from age 4 to age 16. DH grew up in a country without school uniform so I taught him how to tie a tie for the occasional work thing. Like PPs, I can’t do it if I stop to think about it. It’s pure muscle memory.

It really is a bit bonkers, 4 year olds wearing ties!

ItsRainingTacos79 · 26/04/2024 16:24

Yes, we had to tie our own ties at our state primary and secondary schools in the 80s when we got changed after PE.

In the late 90s school uniforms across many state schools moved away from traditional shirts and jumpers to polo shirts and sweatshirts, doing away with the need for ties.

Learnt as a child for school uniform, both primary and secondary - no such thing as clip-ons.

I 'taught' dd to do it, but she wasn't very interested as she wanted the clip-on, useful for speed in the morning. The drawback with clip-ons is other kids pull them off, they get nicked or lost and they're quite expensive to be constantly replacing. I think in secondary I probably bought 4 or 5, maybe more, and dd wasn't a careless girl.

Soubriquet · 26/04/2024 16:31

I do think it’s stupid that kids have to wear a tie. How many jobs require a tie? Not that many

I also hate the “you cannot remove your blazer without permission” but there we go. Rules are rules I suppose

Yes - I learnt when I started primary school.
That was over 50 years ago - no clip-ons in those days!

Me too. I made sure both my boys could tie their shoelaces by the age of 5, when they started school.

SomethingIn · 26/04/2024 16:37

Just ask one of the teachers to show him how to tie a tie

Mine had to tie their own ties at Primary school from reception onwards and they learnt after a couple of goes

It's really easy

You just the thinner side twice around the thicker side around your neck then loop the fatter side through the newly created loop and pull

You need to practice to get the length right

You can of course just loosen the tie to slip your head in and out everyday so you only really need to tie it once

ageratum1 · 26/04/2024 16:38

Yes my kids had to tie a real tie from 4 years old in reception.Although most days they just slid the knot up and down

SomethingIn · 26/04/2024 16:38

It's easier than tying a shoe lace

It's easier than tying a shoe lace

Maybe but at least tying shoe laces is relevant to most people once they leave school. 😅

Enko · 26/04/2024 16:41

Yes I can also.tie a bowtie

moonlitmaze · 26/04/2024 16:43

Yes I wore one for school.I find wearing ties quite bizarre though. I'e never worn one since and neither has my DH. Luckily my DC's school uniforms were quite relaxed, so no ties.

Greywitch2 · 26/04/2024 16:47

No, I've never had to wear one. All my DC, boys and girls, can though. They all had to wear one at secondary school.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 26/04/2024 16:58

No but I can tie a stock

ohtowinthelottery · 26/04/2024 17:01

Yes. I wore one for school from age 4 - 16. No such thing as clip on ties back then - or velcro shoes (I could tie laces at the age of 4 too)
My DS had to wear a tie at Primary School so I taught him how to tie his tie and fasten all the buttons on his School shirt - although he couldn't do the cuff buttons at 4.
