Dd starts secondary school in September and for the first time has to wear a tie.

Now luckily, the school provide clip one cos I don’t have a clue how to do them. Never had to wear a tie before.

I used to be able to tie one, but probably can't remember any more.

ZipZapZoom · 26/04/2024 15:22

Nope. No ties here at primary or secondary. DH can tie a tie but he only has cause to wear one occasionally for weddings, funerals and or interviews.

Not sure it's an essential skill and if there's a clip on I'd go for that.

elliejjtiny · 26/04/2024 15:24

Yes, because we had tied at secondary school. My dc only wear "do up ties" in year 5 and 6. Before then it's elastic ones and in secondary they have clip on ties unless they are prefects.

Nope. We didn't have ties at any of my schools. I wouldn't have a clue.

ImCamembertTheBigCheese · 26/04/2024 15:30

I do. Had to wear one to secondary school so can't easily forget.

Can't believe we were forced to wear one.

TheBirdintheCave · 26/04/2024 15:31

Yep, we learnt aged four in reception as it was part of our uniform.

Yes, I had to wear a tie from starting Junior Infants at not quite four till the day I left secondary school at 17. I can also do bow ties.

I wish my DH would learn to do his own bow tie. I can do them but it takes me ages!
<Missing point entirely>

lul1 · 26/04/2024 15:34

I didn't wear a tie at school but I had to learn when my daughters started secondary 3 years ago.

mathanxiety · 26/04/2024 15:34

Yes - I wore one in junior school back in the late Jurassic. My sister's wore ties with elastic but for some reason I got a proper one. It's the kind of thing you think is stupid at the time (and it really is, objectively) but I did end up teaching my DS to tie his.

SpringBunnies · 26/04/2024 15:34

Yes because I wore one at school. You can learn it on YouTube nowadays. My dad taught me.

ZipZapZoom · 26/04/2024 15:35

As a teacher I agree it's really weird. Hardly any adults have to wear a tie for work and I don't know a single women who wears a tie but for some reason some small children and a large majority of teens in England have to wear them 5 days a week?

lul1 · 26/04/2024 15:36

Strange how so many wore ties then and now. I think there was a gap in the 80-90s where we just wore sweatshirts.

MrsMitford3 · 26/04/2024 15:36

Yes.

And I am also a dab hand at bow ties. DH would be a dishevelled mess without my skills.

I have an extreme visceral hatred of pre-tied bow ties.
I think they are very naff and almost always very cheap and nasty looking.

I can begrudgingly endure prom ones that match their dates dresses I have seen the GRWM prom edits on tiktok recently and have fallen down a rabbit hole of them

SpringBunnies · 26/04/2024 15:36

@ZipZapZoom I think from this thread you can see we have all learned to do it as part of the uniform and I don't believe any of us wear a tie for work.

Maybe it's useful for the 40s trad wife to do their husband's ties? Who knows.

ChessieFL · 26/04/2024 15:37

Yes although haven’t done it for well over 20 years so not sure if I could remember now. Might test myself over the weekend!

Weighnow · 26/04/2024 15:37

Yes, but I can only do it on someone else by standing behind them, as if I was doing my own.

NoraLuka · 26/04/2024 15:37

Yes but I haven’t worn one since 1998 so not sure I remember!

I don’t live in the UK anymore and the DC can’t believe I used to wear the full school uniform with blazer and tie - I tell them about it if they ever complain about having « nothing to wear » for school!

Bumblebeeinatree · 26/04/2024 15:38

Yes. Had ties at school, also sometimes did a tie Knot on dress belts rather than a bow, looks less prissy.

Yep it's really strange how it's seen as an essential for school aged children and yet so few jobs actually require a tie.

The fact some 4 year olds as demonstrated on this thread are expected to wear a tie is even more bizarre.

InTheRainOnATrain · 26/04/2024 15:40

Yes. Not a half windsor or anything fancy but a basic ‘schoolboy knot’. My mum taught me as we had them in reception until Y10 then us girls got to ditch them in Y11 and finally it was own clothes for 6th form! Used to tie them stupidly short and thought we looked cool. So cringe.

Should be easy enough to learn from TikTok or YouTube if there’s not an option not to have a clip on, or is it a strangulation thing?

TheNapkinPot · 26/04/2024 15:44

Yes because I had to wear one for secondary school every day, as did Dh. DCs had it harder as they had to get their knot just above the school logo which had to be on display above the V of the v neck jumper. I taught them to tie their tie.

Emmerald · 26/04/2024 15:47

Yes, ties were part of school uniform and Girls' Brigade uniform. Plus I had to show DD how to tie her tie for school uniform. Then when she was year 10 they switched to clip on ties for safety reasons.

PiggieWig · 26/04/2024 15:48

Yes, we wore a school tie. My kids wore proper ties from KS2 - infants had elastic ones.

LightSpeeds · 26/04/2024 15:51

Yes at senior school. Although I haven't worn one since then, how to do it is ingrained in me!

pelotonaddiction · 26/04/2024 15:53

Yes wore one for school
Cannot tie a stock for dressage competitions though, my friend has to do it for me Blush
