Do you know how to tie and a tie?

Dd starts secondary school in September and for the first time has to wear a tie.

Now luckily, the school provide clip one cos I don’t have a clue how to do them. Never had to wear a tie before.

Yes, as I wore one myself at school (bog standard comp)

Wolfpa · 26/04/2024 14:58

Yes, in Windsor and half Windsor knots. There are videos on YouTube that are quite good if you ever need to learn.

EventuallyDecluttered · 26/04/2024 15:00

I know because of having had to wear them myself at school, I guess youtube is your friend. I taught DS by standing behind him while he sat on a chair and doing it over his shoulders so he could look down and see what my hands were doing.

Yes - I learnt when I started primary school.
That was over 50 years ago - no clip-ons in those days!

TheseWomen · 26/04/2024 15:01

Yes, I had to wear a tie from starting Junior Infants at not quite four till the day I left secondary school at 17. I can also do bow ties.

Thecomfortador · 26/04/2024 15:02

I used to tie one every day for school. Now 25 years later I struggle - had to get dp to tie one for our son's costume as I couldn't do it.

Pistachiovillian · 26/04/2024 15:02

'Do you know how to tie and a tie' sorry OP but that typo made me laugh.
I used to but I'm sure I have forgotten. Not worn one since secondary school 23 years ago.

Boxerdor · 26/04/2024 15:03

Yes- wore one every day in secondary school

QueenOfTheEntireFuckingUniverse · 26/04/2024 15:03

Yes, i had to learn when i had sons. If never worn one myself.

NailsHairNipsHeels · 26/04/2024 15:04

Yes but only if I'm wearing it.
I can't tie it on someone else it feels really awkward and goes wonky

Dacadactyl · 26/04/2024 15:04

Yes I do know. We had an elasticated tie in primary up til year 3 and then they changed to proper ones so I knew from then on.

My friend however had to get me round to show her how to do a tie so that she could show her son for the start of year 7.

Tisfortired · 26/04/2024 15:04

No, DP ties DS10s tie for him and he keeps the same knot in it. Occasionally he accidentally undoes it or it’s been washed and DP is at work and I have to do it Christ almighty I have a YouTube tutorial on the go, the tie on almost strangling myself trying to do it 😂 and it still looks like shit.

SuperLois34 · 26/04/2024 15:06

I had to wear one for comp - but I haven't tried to do a tie for 23 years until about a month ago. Ds1 was struggling to put one on so I put it on me instead and loosely did it so I could pass back to him to put on and tighten up (and it was bloody perfect too).

I did it without thinking, I had no idea it was a skill I'd retained. Both dh and ds1 were quite shocked and impressed 😂

beetr00 · 26/04/2024 15:11

@Soubriquet soo easy 😊

PandaG · 26/04/2024 15:13

Yes, wore one to secondary school.

DolceGustoooohCoffee · 26/04/2024 15:13

I haven't worn one in probably 20 years but I like I'd remember how to. Don't think my partner even owns one otherwise I'd give it a go. Thankfully DSs school wears polo shirts so it's unlikely to be a skill I'll need to relearn unless they change their uniform

purplecorkheart · 26/04/2024 15:15

Yes as I wore one for school. Mind you I haven't tried to tie once since

SirenSays · 26/04/2024 15:15

I wore one for school, I have definitely forgotten though.

MiddleAgedDread · 26/04/2024 15:16

I haven't worn one since primary school but I think I could still tie one.....cross it over, wrap it round, up the middle and down through the cross over bit (or something like that!). Get her on youtube, she'll have worked it out by September!

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 26/04/2024 15:17

I had to wear one for school and had to teach all my five kids how to tie one (part of their school uniform too). Still have nightmares about teaching the two left handers - in the end I got the older one to teach the younger one.

Most used to tie it once and then just loosen it and slip it over their head. Only needed retying when the ties were washed!

I can do it if I don't think about it, if I have to stop and think 'how do I tie a tie' I can't do it. But if I've got one round my neck I can tie it as long as I don't concentrate. Which is odd. Muscle memory, I guess.

jackstini · 26/04/2024 15:17

Yes, learned for girls brigade uniform aged 7!

All ties at ds school are clip on though now - due to risk of strangulation...

dementedpixie · 26/04/2024 15:18

Yes, I had to wear one at school many years ago and the kids primary school brought shirts and ties in a few years ago and they are standard at secondary school here.

EasternStandard · 26/04/2024 15:18

Yes we had ties at school

SingingSands · 26/04/2024 15:19

I do, we had ties in primary and secondary and I've never forgotten.

However - as a young tired teen, on day one after the long summer hols - I looked in the mirror and for a second could not work out why my tie looked "wrong". I had tied it in a bow 😂

stopringingme · 26/04/2024 15:19

Yes, we had ties in primary school.
