Your favourite city break

Looking to take my DP away on a city break abroad just the two of us next year for his 40th.

I’ve looked at a few places but cannot for the life of me decide on where. He’s always wanted to go to Italy so I’m possibly swaying towards taking him there but unsure which city yet.

Anyway I guess my reason for the post is I’d like to know what your favourite city break was & why?

OP posts:

Rome, without a doubt, but anywhere in Italy would be fab.
Of the smaller, less well-known Italian cities I would particularly recommend Padua and Bologna.

BeaRF75 · 26/04/2024 12:23

For those asking, Munich is lovely, and Germany in general is hugely underrated. Great art and architecture, but not crowded. Also surprisingly good shopping. Large park. Even the Hofbrauhaus is touristy but fun.
Was there last week, but it was very very cold - I think May and June might be the best months.

Reims

Whydoiwearsomuchleopardprint · 26/04/2024 12:41

Rome, absolutely amazing and one of my fav holidays ever!!

MuggedByReality · 26/04/2024 12:54

London is the best city in the world, and it’s not even a contest.

Other than that, I really enjoyed Munich, Washington DC, Barcelona, Berlin, Bilbao & Donostia / San Sebastián (the Basque foodie culture is amazing). I also loved Seville & Rome, but definitely not in July or August, when it’s way, way too hot to enjoy doing anything.

MinnieMountain · 26/04/2024 13:23

What does he like doing OP?

We went to Rome for my 40th as I find Ancient Rome fascinating.

DS (10) and I are going to Munich in October. Beer and a general love of Germany for me, science museum, BMW World and a water park for DS. Olympia Park and sausages for us both 😁

LlynTegid · 26/04/2024 13:28

If you choose Seville, let us know about it OP. One place I want to visit soon.

HeraSyndulla · 26/04/2024 13:29

New York, but I worked there for a few years so I know it quite well and I still have friends there.

cathyandclaire · 26/04/2024 13:33

Ljubljana is a beautiful manageable city for a weekend.

Kitkat1523 · 26/04/2024 13:35

Valencia, Seville, Granada….in no particular order

LivelyBlake · 26/04/2024 13:37

If you choose Seville I’d avoid Easter and mid April for the local feria. It will be packed!

DaftFlerken · 26/04/2024 13:51

Florence is absolutely beautiful
We went to Las Vegas for DH's birthday which was fantastic but in a much different way

@maudelovesharold Berlin a thousand times over. I'm not a party person. 😁

I think the problem is that I used to be, and just had this sense there were warehouse parties on every corner that I was far, far too old and uncool for. Blush

MissAmbrosia · 27/04/2024 19:24

Seville is my absolute favourite- maybe followed by Lisbon. And Barcelona if you've never been.

Prague used to be my favourite city - but it is completely overrun now. Heaving crowds everywhere. And it's not even cheap any more.

Budapest is fab, also Krakow, Madrid, Nice, Granada. Rome needs longer than a weekend. I really enjoyed Oslo - but the wine price is eye-watering.

It really depends what you like doing. When I go away with DH we do museums/cultural stuff and beach. When I go way with my friends, we normally do a walking tour, a tasting menu or otherwise fancy place one night and spend a lot of time drinking aperols in scenic spots and find best roof top bars.

BitOutOfPractice · 27/04/2024 19:30

Italy: Bologna, Milan
Spain: Malaga, Madrid
elsewhere: Warsaw, Athens, Ghent, Washington DC, Lisbon.

I'd also avoid June to September, so so HOT 🥵.

Prague
berlin
Florence
venice

Pam100127 · 29/04/2024 16:21

The Amalfi Coast is beautiful - particularly Sorrento.
Venice is really atmospheric, if you go out of season (we went in April and it wasn’t too busy)

ThatGladTiger · 29/04/2024 16:33

I’m surprised to be the first one to say this, but I love Copenhagen! Beautiful city that’s so easy to get around!

Doone22 · 29/04/2024 18:02

Rome

Roselilly36 · 29/04/2024 18:07

Alicante city is great we loved it.

WordInYourShellLike · 29/04/2024 18:20

Full confession - I haven't actually been myself but I listened to this on Saturday and it made me really really want to go to Lisbon! https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m001ypsk

BBC Radio 4 - Your Place or Mine with Shaun Keaveny, Catherine Bohart: Lisbon, Portugal

What's not to love in a romantic, arty, cool waterside city full of colourful buildings?

In Italy I love Sienna and Florence.
Other places I've enjoyed:
Santiago de Compostela
Lisbon
Amsterdam
Freiberg
Krakow
Warsaw
A surprise UK hit was Coventry!

I loved Freiburg!

And123456 · 29/04/2024 18:30

Barcelona, Krakow, Rome, Budapest, or a bit further afield Dubrovnik and Split.

HelenHen · 29/04/2024 19:01

I didn't really like Rome. Found it a bit cold and impersonal. Same with Amsterdam.

Florence is just gorgeous, but don't know what you'd do for a full weekend. Same with Verona, or Lucca, Siena, Pisa. Unless you hire a car and do all.

Copenhagen was my favourite. The people were so friendly and happy and it was really beautiful and clean.

Paris is fabulous but sparse. Same with London. You could be stuck on transport for a lot of it.

Dublin is my happy place though. There's no greater city to lose yourself in and you can just walk everywhere
