Your favourite city break

Looking to take my DP away on a city break abroad just the two of us next year for his 40th.

I’ve looked at a few places but cannot for the life of me decide on where. He’s always wanted to go to Italy so I’m possibly swaying towards taking him there but unsure which city yet.

Anyway I guess my reason for the post is I’d like to know what your favourite city break was & why?

I loved Rome and Warsaw

Shetlands · 25/04/2024 09:05

Rome, Florence and Venice are great city breaks in spring or autumn.

Paris is a dream in spring.

Seville is fabulous but I'd avoid bullfighting season from Easter to October.

I went to Rome and Venice in past 2 years, Venice only 2 months ago and I loved it, I've been on various city breaks but Venice is the place for me, I feel sad when I think that I'm
Not there now! I got it cheap on love holidays for £500 with bed and breakfast and flights.

LittleMonks11 · 25/04/2024 09:09

It should be Italy if that's where he's always wanted to go. The choice is endless. We loved Rome - so much to do. It's a great starting point for a first trip to Italy.

Rome! I could bang on for hours about it. Incredible city.

Don’t go in the summer it’s way too hot and prepare yourself to walk 25k steps a day.

There’s not really an off season now it is busy all year round.

British Airways do some brilliant deals on Rome breaks if you’re flying from Heathrow/Gatwick.

TheBirdintheCave · 25/04/2024 09:26

Seville, Venice or Lisbon for us.

TheBirdintheCave · 25/04/2024 09:27

@Behonest32 Venice is one of my heart places, by which I mean ones heart aches when one sees a photo or video of it. I've been three times and it's not enough.

Tinks15 · 25/04/2024 18:24

Thanks all for replying some great suggestions. Some I’ve not even considered.

His birthday is in January but not looking to go until Easter holidays when the weather will be a little better. We also have to go during school holidays as i work in a school which is a pain.

In Europe- Valetta, Prague, The Hague.
In the UK- Chester, York, Edinburgh, Portsmouth.

Another vote for Naples. I also echo PP that's it not for everyone, but I think it's spooky, atmospheric, totally unique. Lovely food. If you find it's grotty side doesn't work, the Capri is an easy escape.

whatthehellnow23 · 25/04/2024 20:20

Stockholm.... absolutely beautiful and accessible

upinclouds · 25/04/2024 20:35

Seville - compact, fabulous tapas, lovely buildings
Malaga - full of history, great food, coastal so you can spend an afternoon on the beach
Porto - easy to get around, lovely spot on the river, port tasting
Venice - loved it, only went for the day on a cruise years ago and would like to go again so we can visit the islands

JoJothegerbil · 25/04/2024 20:38

We were in Krakow a couple of weeks ago. Such a pretty city. Good value too. We had some excellent meals in the less touristy restaurants for less than £20 per head including drinks.

SeeingRainbowsInTheGloom · 25/04/2024 20:44

Budapest is great, loads to see.

tastydiner · 25/04/2024 20:45

New York. Loved everything about the place. Desperate to go back.

Porto. Lovely places easily walkable, great architecture and of course, Pasetlle de Nata.

Venice. Great for a 48 hour break.

marmitegirl01 · 25/04/2024 21:03

Madrid 👏👏

professionalnomad · 25/04/2024 22:16

Sarajevo is my favourite city in Europe. Istanbul is incredible as well

quizzys · 25/04/2024 22:37

Well it has to be Italy doesn't it?

Think of the size of that country and the contrasts from North to South. Every city I've been to was great though, so you can't go wrong no matter where you go.

Rome at Easter will be heaving - Il Papa and the Vatican ceremonies etc. and I suppose most big cities will be the same, but without the religious significance.

Anyway North - Torino, Milan (half a day, then go to Lake Como?) Verona, Padua, Venice, Bologna, Florence, Lucca,

Of the above my favourites were Bologna, Lucca, and Padua. Padua is a gem, just 1/2 hour from Venice on the train, so the best of both worlds.

Then further South, Rome of course, Naples, Sorrento, (Pompeii and Herculaneum) Positano, Capri etc. My favourite was Salerno, a little less polished and chi chi than Positano and Sorrento, but great and a super view from back in the hills and train direct to Naples and connections to Pompeii

That's enough to get on with, now make a choice!

mondaytosunday · 25/04/2024 23:13

My husband took me to Rome early in our relationship. It was wonderful. December and warm enough to eat lunch outside.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 26/04/2024 05:49

KatPurrson · 26/04/2024 05:52

Rome or Madrid

Noyok · 26/04/2024 06:00

Venice is absolutely stunning.

Philandbill · 26/04/2024 06:08

If Italy then Florence for scenery and art or Verona for the scenery and possibility to visit Lake Garda or Venice as both can be accessed by train or bus. And Venice is of course wonderful.
Otherwise Berlin for the history, culture and general vibe, Lisbon as there's a real variety of things to see or Paris because it's Paris and it's fabulous and I've never got tired of visiting it.
In the UK I'd say Bath or York, and our surprise UK hit (in the spirit of @BringMeSunshineAllDayLong) was Lincoln. I hope you have a fabulous time wherever you go.

MinnieMountain · 26/04/2024 06:21

Rome is the only place I’ve been to multiple times.

Malaga is great too.
