Your favourite city break

Looking to take my DP away on a city break abroad just the two of us next year for his 40th.

I’ve looked at a few places but cannot for the life of me decide on where. He’s always wanted to go to Italy so I’m possibly swaying towards taking him there but unsure which city yet.

Anyway I guess my reason for the post is I’d like to know what your favourite city break was & why?

I love Krakow a lot (very safe, beautiful city, lots of interesting trips). Prague was also a nice city with lots of lovely walking. Dublin is great for a more modern city and a great pint of Guinness! Reykjavik is stunning and truly a once in a lifetime trip - Blue Lagoon is just spectacular. Paris is okay, Bern is okay, Rome is okay - all just average from my experiences. One city I hated was Milan. It was dirty, felt sleazy and uncomfortable and I got (F, 20s) by a guy off the metro which was awful. Come to think of it I also got tailed in Paris, and Barcelona (pickpockets). Annecy/ Sorrento are not quite city breaks but beautiful places which I’d highly recommend if you are looking for something a bit more relaxed. Hope you have a great trip wherever you choose!

Florence would be my favourite of the Italian cities. I liked Rome, but Florence was much more beautiful and more relaxing.
The people were a lot friendlier than in Milan or Rome.
I suppose it depends on what you want from the weekend.

Copenhagen is so underrated and is so lovely. Would also recommend Krakow or Florence (take a day trip to Pisa as it’s a super easy train ride away)

Surgeryscardeycat · 29/04/2024 20:36

Goodness it's got to be Venice!

It's so unique then Florence (day trip to sienna) and Rome.

All those mentioning seville, how did you get there?

I've been wanting to go for years but the flights ate really expensive

The issue with Copenhagen is it's so expensive. And in winter it's cold. We went in December last time and it was -7c. And didn't get above freezing even in the daytime. Which as much as I like Copenhagen there's a limit as to how much time you can spend outside in that (we were thermalled up to our eyeballs too). Especially if you want to do Tivoli and are stood about queuing.

If you have the choice of somewhere cheaper and you aren't bothered about the destination it wouldn't be my choice. If you really fancy Copenhagen then it's great, but it's not somewhere that I'd recommend without good reason to.

For Italy I’d go with Rome. It’s just got everything. I could go every year.
If not Italy, then Prague, Copenhagen, Munich or Barcelona.

I am now considering Seville although Naples and Amalfi are my next trips.

Not been on many as I prefer longer holidays but I really liked Barcelona. The worst place was Milan but there were still good things to see and it’s pretty affordable. Amsterdam was good but I went in February and it was cold. ( I don’t smoke or partake in other activities they have on offer so they haven’t impacted my score).

caringcarer · 29/04/2024 20:52

My favourites are Venice and Salzburg.

Brookiecooker · 29/04/2024 21:52

Budapest at Christmas. Seville is lovely but hot in the summer

Duechristmas · 29/04/2024 22:03

Bruges
We thought Naples was terrible

Loved Berlin, Barcelona, Rome, Venice and New York. Would go back to all of them. Thought Paris was overrated.
If you’re definitely going to Italy, either Rome or Venice were both great.

chilimartini · 29/04/2024 22:17

Amalfi coast?

Surgeryscardeycat · 29/04/2024 22:19

Salburg is fabulous.

Coldupnorth87 · 30/04/2024 08:32

Sil was just pickpocketed in Florence, so do take care.

GettingStuffed · 30/04/2024 08:57

Prague there's so much to see and do plus some really good beers.

It happened to me in Berlin. It’s a risk in all big cities.

Florence
Rome
Palermo
Seville
Lisbon
Marseille
Krakow

my favourites in no particular order!

I've been to Florence, Rome and Venice (any the Amalfi coast including Pompeii).

Loved them all for different reasons:

Rome - like an open air museum and too much to see in one short trip. Depends on what you like to see - St Peters and the Vatican museum are stunning, lovely squares and fountains, churches with amazing ceilings & artwork hidden all over the place, or the ancient stuff like the coliseum, the pantheon and the forum.

Venice - amazing to see it in the flesh with the waterways, small enough to see lots of it and enjoy hoping on and off boats, some great churches and the gold decision in St Marks. I'd go there again just for a weekend if I could.

Florence - often people's favourite, but least favourite of mine (but I still loved it lol). Not so interesting for just wandering around, but if you like artwork the galleries are amazing, the duomo is worth visiting and the Boboli gardens are lovely.

If you're interested in ancient history, Pompeii and Herculaneum are great, and go on a train down to Paestum - absolutely stunning.

SP2024 · 30/04/2024 21:31

Seville. Rome. Florence. Venice. Krakow. Dubrovnik. Reykjavik.

BKBH · 01/05/2024 09:14

What does he like to do when away? Is temperature / weather important? As that makes a difference!

Our city breaks are chosen around interesting history, good food and wine and easy walk-ability. These are the top faves from the past few years:

Sorrento - if your hubs wants Italy this would be my 1st choice every time. The more classical cities are lovely too but for me you can’t beat a sea view.

Porto - beautiful architecture, interesting to learn about and try lots of varieties of port, feels a bit less touristy than Lisbon.

Granada - the Alhambra is beyond stunning in real life, especially if the snow is still on the mountains. Tapas culture and flamenco top this off as a unique choice.

Vienna - hubs did this one for my birthday and booked a ballet at the famous opera house. A special experience if you like that kind of thing. The history and architecture generally is stunning too.

Berlin - obviously tons of history here but the modern side of the city is so varied and cosmopolitan. There’s something for every one and the variety of food is amazing!

Valletta - just got back and it’s soo beautiful, full of history and a good option for this time of year (not too dissimilar to your plan for next year!)

Cologne at christmas. Just beautiful with the christmas markets. If not at christmas then Paris, so much to see and do.
