Your favourite city break

Looking to take my DP away on a city break abroad just the two of us next year for his 40th.

I’ve looked at a few places but cannot for the life of me decide on where. He’s always wanted to go to Italy so I’m possibly swaying towards taking him there but unsure which city yet.

Anyway I guess my reason for the post is I’d like to know what your favourite city break was & why?

Rome if you were thinking of Italy.
I do like Berlin and Dubrovnik.

Sunnnybunny72 · 26/04/2024 06:41

Done loads.
Seville my favourite, followed by Reykjavik and Rome.

macshoto · 26/04/2024 08:44

Vienna (Steiereck-im-Stadtpark is a great restaurant)
Barcelona (must be done at lease once)
Venice (in the off-season)
Stockholm (mid-summer best)
Seville (winter/shoulder season)

Most places I've been to have been amazing:
Budapest
Gdansk
Rome
Madrid
Porto

NecessaryNC24 · 26/04/2024 08:48

Paris
New York
Rome
Athens

Would return in a heartbeat ❤️.

Again, not wanting to derail the thread, but we’ve been wondering about city breaks in Germany. Munich, Berlin?

NecessaryNC24 · 26/04/2024 08:54

Munich is underrated imo, it's been years but the history, the architecture and culture definitely left an impression on the teenage me.

HelloMyNameIsElderSmurf · 26/04/2024 09:08

My favourites are all Spain: Madrid, Seville, Malaga. But if it has to be Italy I'd say Bologna is just perfect for a weekend break. I really loved a smaller place called Bergamo which is close to Milan, which isn't the prettiest of cities but actually also very good fun for a weekend.

Venice is of course the most magical city in the world but I wouldn't go at a peak holiday time like Easter.

Munich is great, really interesting place with lots to do. And great food, actually, we ate really well. Berlin also great but maybe more of a party city?

IvorTheEngineDriver · 26/04/2024 09:11

Personally, I'd say Cologne.

DW did a city break to Rome some 25 years ago and still says it's the best place she's ever been to.

Not a fan of Munich myself, but I agree Germany is a much under-rated destination for city breaks.

JohnBetjeman · 26/04/2024 09:15

Slough.

Of course.

(Although it's more a town break than city break.)

Chersfrozenface · 26/04/2024 09:16

Another vote for Porto.
Also Cologne.

GreenShady · 26/04/2024 09:17

Going to jump in and say Malta - it is unbelievably beautiful.
A weekend might not be enough, is the only problem 😂

Burpcloth · 26/04/2024 09:23

Bologna. Particularly if your vibe is more eating and taking it easy and wandering and soaking up italian-ness than ticking off specific sites as it's less heavily crowded than Florence/ Rome. (With the bonus that Florence is a short and very easy train ride away!).

Seville is fabulous. If he likes Italy and hasn’t been to Florence it’s lovely. It’s a tiny city with wonderful food, lots of art, fantastic ice cream and lots of people watching.

Florence. Too crowded. Wasn't keen. City of Queues.

catwithflowers · 25/04/2024 00:02

Rome if he wants to go to Italy, Seville if you choose Spain 🥰

Also didn't like Rome much. Too touristy and too many people trying to rip you off.

rookiemere · 26/04/2024 09:27

I thought Rome was amazing, but so much to see that a weekend break just isn't long enough.

RedToothBrush · 26/04/2024 09:34

Lisbon, Vienna or Budapest for a weekend city break would be my recommendations. Love Amsterdam & Barcelona too, but everyone seems to have been! Wouldn't rule out Bordeaux either - lots of trips to wine tasting land available. Nice city. Wasn't that amazed by Seville. Copenhagen is great but expensive.
Preferred Bologna to Florence by a country mile

My fav cities in Europe are Reykjavik and Sarajevo. Reykjavik is not to everyone's taste though and Sarajevo is a pain in the arse / expensive to get to so not really suitable for a city break.

Berlin, Porto and Bilbao still remain on my hit list to go to.

Mercurial123 · 26/04/2024 09:54

Stockholm closely followed by Riga.

Philandbill · 26/04/2024 12:01

@maudelovesharold Berlin a thousand times over. I'm not a party person. 😁

SpringLobelia · 26/04/2024 12:03

We used to go to Vienna the week before Christmas every year to enjoy the sites and the Christmas markets and eat at the little beisls. It was wonderful.

A few weeks back we went on a whim to Munich. Absolutely loved it. Vibrant, safe, welcoming and so much to see and do. And some great day trips. We were just talking about visiting Berlin next.

yogastateofmind · 26/04/2024 12:09

Seville. Everything about it, even the streets smell gorgeous. Wonderful weather, beautiful vibe, architecture is stunning, food is amazing and it’s relatively cheap compared to UK.

ginasevern · 26/04/2024 12:13

If he wants Italy then give him Italy. Quite frankly you're spoilt for choice. Naples is fantastic but if he is an Italy novice, it might be a bit too "different". Bologna is a great city and obviously Rome and Florence.

BIossomtoes · 26/04/2024 12:15

Berlin’s fabulous. It’s also the only place I’ve been pickpocketed.
