I've just eaten half a bag a few sugared almonds.
I have not had these for years, maybe even decades! I'd forgotten how moreishly crunchy and addictive these bad boys are.
Also rather partial to those weird flying saucer things, that are supposed melt but in reality, kinda half dissolve and get stuck like you're shedding skin.
Those sherbert fountain things, with the liquorice... I want to say wand (correct me if I'm a wrong 'un) also get an honorable mention.

What are your faves sweets from childhood?

Tablet! Or Parma Violets if I haven't got any tablet...

onlyhereforthefood · 07/04/2024 20:54

I love a blackcurrant and liquorice

bluetopazlove · 07/04/2024 20:58

Tablet is quite easy to make , if your a sort of cook . Bear in mind you will have to control yourself or you will make yourself like a sick child 😁.

My dad had a newsagent's /post office in the 60s/70s/early 80s.

Japps's Desserts ( sugar coated cubes ) were very popular as were cough twists, Victory Vs, Foxes Glacier Mints , Coconut Mushrooms, herbal tablets... I could go on and on.

As to children... chocolate covered banana foams were really popular as were flying saucers, fruit salads, Bazoukas , filled liquorice tubes, foam shrimps and so much more.

Oh how our teeth rotted!

SpeedwellBlue · 07/04/2024 21:13

Foam mushrooms. The Malaco ones not the ones in tesco.
Shrimps

Diversion · 07/04/2024 21:19

Cola cubes, pineapple cubes, fruit salads and rainbow crystals mmmmmm. Does anyone else remember asking for a 10p mix and getting a whole paper bag full of sweets? We have an old fashioned sweet shop not too far away, my husband loves it and buys pear drops and rhubarb and custards.

jelly79 · 07/04/2024 21:35

Some tremendous shouts!!!

Choc lick
Choc nibs
Monkey nut shaped sweets with bits of nuts in
Roy the rovers bar
Chocolate highland toffee bars

My absolute faves - the original beer bottles!

RustyBear · 07/04/2024 23:50

@CatsLikeBoxes “rectangular butterscotch sweets in a textured silvery wrapper” - I’d forgotten those - I used to love them. In fact there were two types we used to get, Callard & Bowser’s were a long bar with a notch across the middle, wrapped in silver, and Keiller’s were shaped like a brick with a slightly tapered top, wrapped in gold.

Shityshitybangbang · 08/04/2024 00:13

@FillyourPothole you can still get them online in giant tubs but I can't be trusted Grin

me neither. I'm not even gonna look that up 😄

NCFTS · 07/04/2024 16:27

@Waltzers I just googled choc lick and they still sell it online!

Oh really, I'm in Australia now, wonder if I can get some delivered here 😁

Thursa · 08/04/2024 05:27

Our sweetie shop had a really high counter and the woman who worked there was tiny. I’ve never managed to get to 5 foot myself, so that was interesting. Used to pop in on a Saturday for a quarter of Crispets. Anyone remember them?

CatsLikeBoxes · 08/04/2024 20:12

@RustyBear I bought some butterscotch sweets somewhere like m&s and they were such a disappointment in comparison to the glorious butterscotch of old!

BusySittingDown · 08/04/2024 20:29

Yes to all of the above.

We have a retro sweet shop nearby and it's amazing! Not as cheap as they were when I was little though. 20p would get bugger all, whereas I used to spend hours in my local paper shop choosing my 20p mix!

I mourn the loss of the Cadbury's Spira. They were amazing!

Also those potato puff crisps (Burton's I think), particularly the salt and vinegar flavour.

Do they still do Transformers crisps? The ones with a sort of T shape thing and then circles and you could make it into a car. I used to love the spicy flavour.

Darklane · 08/04/2024 20:52

Pineapple cubes
Halfpenny Spanish, the hard sort & rainbow mix to dip it in.
Cinder toffee, some chocolate covered.
Barley twists
Sour apples
Liquorice torpedoes
Spearmint bars
Old fashioned treacle toffee that came in a little metal tray with a miniature toffee hammer.
Nut brittle

I lived with my DG who owned a sweet shop. She made ice cream to sell from cream, butter, sugar & vanilla pods.
