Retro Sweets

I've just eaten half a bag a few sugared almonds.
I have not had these for years, maybe even decades! I'd forgotten how moreishly crunchy and addictive these bad boys are.
Also rather partial to those weird flying saucer things, that are supposed melt but in reality, kinda half dissolve and get stuck like you're shedding skin.
Those sherbert fountain things, with the liquorice... I want to say wand (correct me if I'm a wrong 'un) also get an honorable mention.

What are your faves sweets from childhood?

Any one remember space dust? Black jack chews which used to turn the tongue black?

Bloody loved Space Dust 😋 .Used to cram in as much as I could for max sound 😁.

Uncooperativefingers · 06/04/2024 17:37

Sarsaparilla drops here. Still love them, but not easy to get hold of.

Also pear drops, aniseed balls and lemon sherbets. All "old fashioned" even when I was a kid, but I've always preferred hard boiled sweets to the chewy stuff

FlutteryButterfly · 06/04/2024 17:39

I loved pear drops, aniseed balls, cough candy and cola cubes. Also Cherry drops. O believe you can still get dome of these but I'd still class them as retro.

I love liquorice but very aware its an acquired taste. So I'll add liquorice comfits, Catherine Wheels, liquorice Pipes and Pontefract cakes.

The boy who sat behind me at school ate too many Pacers and was sick all over my back. It was bright green.

Sweets on a school day?! No one I ever knew got sweets on a school day ! They were for Saturday evenings ! Strictly .

FlutteryButterfly · 06/04/2024 18:05

I have nostalgia remembering buying by the 1/4 or spending 20p on penny sweets (sometimes half penny sweets) I'm 45

Can still bit black jacks in home bargains! They come in a bag with fruit salads. Sometimes you can buy the sticks of black jacks (come like chewits).

Cherry lips are my fav. There's a stall in Swansea market that do all the old sweets!

We had a tuck shop at our school so every day was Saturday night for me. It's amazing I have a tooth left in my head.

Nerds and Gobstoppers. If I see them in the supermarket on a special I HAVE to buy them and hide them from the kids. I'm 43 lol

changingchaali · 07/04/2024 00:10

Oooooh and Cherry Drops 😋

sprigatito · 07/04/2024 00:19

Herbal tablets were my major weakness. I miss them so much.

those ice cups were my absolute favourites - had totally forgotten about them. They were so delicious!

peloton2024 · 07/04/2024 01:41

@FillyourPothole you can still get them online in giant tubs but I can't be trusted Grin

Pacers were great before the rebrand, but the addition of the stripes was a negative in my view.

Double Agents were awesome and I have no idea why they suddenly vanished from shelves.

Old English Spangles, which were great because other kids hated them so didn't bother me.

The opaque green Spangle in the fruit version, which I think was actually supposed to be Grapefruit flavour.

Texan bars. Still nothing comparable to the original. They were garbage when they relaunched. Half the size, and nowhere near as hard work to chew.

Splicers. Probably banned because of profligate E-number use, but I didn't care. It was like having a giant, elongated Opal Fruit bar, with no pesky wrappers to spoil the fun, and actual proper zingy flavour, not the dreary "is that it?" opal fruits let-down.

Gold Rush bubblegum, with the wee bag made to look like a hessian sack.

Dinosaur Eggs, the watermelon flavour.

More recently, I will never forgive them for withdrawing plain chocolate Bounty. The milk version is foul.

Foxlover46 · 07/04/2024 01:53

I know you can buy wham bars now but I remember them having a really thick fizzy crust on the top of the bar I loved that !

Waltzers · 07/04/2024 03:12

My favourite was Choc lick but I'm not sure if that was just something our local shop did (dh grew up in the same area but has never had it) it was blended smarties you ate like sherbet and 10p worth seemed to last forever.

Northernsouloldies · 07/04/2024 04:16

Lucky tatties a hard cinnamon covered candy and sometimes you'd find a 2p or 5p in your lucky tatties.

Floatinginatincan · 07/04/2024 04:39

Mojos, they were 2 for a penny. Mint & lemon were the best.

DahliaMacNamara · 07/04/2024 15:02

Similar to Double Agents, Blobs were my favourite childhood sweets. They also vanished into thin air. Toffee apple, strawberry and cream and apple, pear and banana. Disastrous for the teeth, but so delicious. I was a big fan of the proper hardcore fruit gum as well. The angled edges on the top could cling to your back teeth for weeks.
