Posh hotel un-asked for alarm at 6 - compensation?!

hellsBells246 · 03/04/2024 05:21

Staying in a v posh hotel. Think 900 Swiss francs per night...

Just got woken up by a bloody alarm. Picked up phone and got a recorded message saying we had asked for a 6am alarm. We hadn't!! It woke us both and now we can't get back to sleep.

Rang reception, who were puzzled about the alarm but not v apologetic.

AIBU to think they could offer a small gesture to apologise?? Eg a free bottle of wine?! Or AIB greedy and mistakes happen?!

You couldn't get back to sleep... well no, being on Mumsnet is probably why you can't go back to sleep.

ggggggooooo · 04/04/2024 08:49

@Soontobe60

Don’t be daft! How can an alarm waking you up at 6am ‘spoil the night’? The night is over!!! And as for being ‘exhausted’ the next day… words fail me 😂

Not specify to the OP but if I was paying €€€€€ for a night away so I could sleep in and not be disturbed by my kids or work or anything and I was woken early this fucking up part of the reason I was spending €€€€€ to be away too right I'd be mad.

hellsBells246 · 04/04/2024 08:58

@Mummame2222 - oh my God. Are you deliberately being obtuse??

The bar menu contained champagne, wines and beers from all over the world... but all our vouchers covered was one Swiss wine and one Swiss beer.

That's not a drink 'of our choice', is it?

The craziest and most predictable posts are the snide ones that try to put you down

The ones that say 'You must so poor/common/unused to/the underclass/the sort of person who lives in a trailer and has no experience of the nicer things in life' to complain

All the while aiming it at someone who spends more in a hotel room than they do for an entire holiday 😂

Lots of people who have no experience of the finer things trying to make other people feel small is the biggest cringe. And they don't have clue how obvious they are!

Passive aggressive posts are literally entertaining and embarrassing in equal measures.

I stay at very nice places.
I'd be pissed off with both the lack of service and the poor drinks offering.

The reason I stay where I stay is precisely because guests are made to feel pampered and valued. That's not being entitled. That's buying a service. Some people haven't got a clue.

pinotnow · 04/04/2024 09:13

That's bloody mean of the hotel - a very grudging gesture and certainly doesn't speak of the 'class' that others have been banging on about.

LeonoraFlorence · 04/04/2024 09:18

I do understand feeling a bit annoyed but these things happen. It was a mistake, I don’t think reception would think you would even be able expecting compensation? If I couldn’t get back to sleep I’d have still stayed in bed, still a lie in in my book (I have young DDs!). Enjoy your holiday :)

wonderstuff · 04/04/2024 09:20

God I’d be livid! You pay for a service and waking you up completely changes the experience you expected. I would want some sort of acknowledgement of that in the form of a reduced bill or similar.

@fungipie - Maybe- what I know for sure, I'd be lying there enjoying the luxury of this amazing Hotel room and planning what I would do for that amazing day in an amazing location.

Not moaning on MN. But maybe it's just me.

And I have never ever spent a holiday, never mind a night, in a Hotel at this ridiculous price. £850 is quite a price for most, and most would make the best of it.

Oh, FFS. Tell you what, why don't you let me know when you've booked a special night in a hotel that you're really looking forward to? I'll ring you at 6am, make sure to wake you up. Let's see how chilled you'd be then 🙄🙄

Exactly, they'd probably be crying into their duvet if it happened to them 😂
FFS this site sometimes lol, anyone would be pissed off with. 6am alarm clock when they've spent loads on a hotel for the night!

not catching out- but for those who know the region, fair to wonder as even the poshest Hotels are not that expensive. Funny really!

Maybe OP was quoting what they paid for the night, they had two rooms so not unreasonable to think it might be double what was quoted.

I actually have more time to piss about on MN when I'm away

Hey, fair enough. But honestly- if that happened to me, thinking of getting straight on to MN at 6amish- would be the very last thing on my mind. Who does that???

lol.

No, it isn't. I think that gesture is rubbish and not what I would expect from a classy hotel.

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 03/04/2024 22:03

I have stayed in a hotel in Switzerland where 900 Swiss Francs is in their of lower price range; most rooms are more.

Edited

God same here! Made my hair curl, but that’s banking for you.

… also drank a bottle of wine for £4K once at the FIFA HQ. Not my bill, not my problem. Wasn’t even the most expensive on the menu, but our CEO fancied it. As you do when you’re Swiss and loaded. (About 20!years ago)

Makes me laugh that some people think £900 a night is as high as it could possibly go.

Are you having a bad day?

Turquoise123 · 04/04/2024 17:37

At £1,000 per night I would expect them to apologise and maybe flowers etc. still might happen. It’s the apology.

TickyTacky · 04/04/2024 17:37

Yanbu & I'm glad it's been resolved. Once in a premier inn our bedside lights had no bulbs, so we went to reception. They sent someone to fix the issue and gave us a free breakfast, along with an apology. That was minor compared to being woken up that early when you're expecting (and have paid for) a lovely, full night's sleep.

sarahd29 · 04/04/2024 17:41

I would be annoyed if I were the person they meant to set the alarm for though.

I understand your point, also people are human and we all
make mistakes, it’s someone’s daughter/son that messed up. Be nice if they give you a gesture but bygones and all that.

LimeReader · 04/04/2024 17:45

I agree with you- that’s awful. You go to sleep and as soon as an alarm goes off you’re awake !!! It would piss me right off!!!!

MachineBee · 04/04/2024 17:48

Snowyymum · 03/04/2024 05:36

I can empathise with you. I am so irritated when customer service is poor/ staff don’t acknowledge impact of their mistake. I get that we all make mistakes- but sometimes we try and ‘make up for it’. I do understand posters suggestions that it’s just an alarm- but equally for all the hotel know the prospect of a lie in could be why you booked the room
I don’t think you are greedy- a cheap bottle of wine costs £7 or a desert from kitchen a few pound. It would have just shown they acknowledged impact

If you’re in Switzerland a bottle of wine will be nowhere near £7! Even a cheap one.

LouDeLou · 04/04/2024 17:48

A proper apology and something comp’d is the least they could do for the cost of the hotel!

that’d be the difference between me going back again or not.

August1980 · 04/04/2024 17:48

Greedy!

LaughingCat · 04/04/2024 17:52

Sure someone’s already said this but my initial thought is that you might be miffed about being woken up at 6am…the room that needed to be woken at 6am will be considerably more miffed that they didn’t get a call that they probably very much needed (because asking for a wake up call on top of your phone alarm indicates something that is likely quite important).

I would have been a tad irritated and probably wouldn’t have been able to get back to sleep
either because when I’m up, I’m up. But it wouldn’t have bothered me…certainly not enough to think about apology wine or creating a Mumsnet thread 😂
