Posh hotel un-asked for alarm at 6 - compensation?!

Staying in a v posh hotel. Think 900 Swiss francs per night...

Just got woken up by a bloody alarm. Picked up phone and got a recorded message saying we had asked for a 6am alarm. We hadn't!! It woke us both and now we can't get back to sleep.

Rang reception, who were puzzled about the alarm but not v apologetic.

AIBU to think they could offer a small gesture to apologise?? Eg a free bottle of wine?! Or AIB greedy and mistakes happen?!

YANBU. You paid for the luxury of sleeping in a fancy hotel and then had a rude awakening. The least they could do is offer a small gesture like complimentary drinks or dessert - not grabby at all to expect that and I hate people who complain unnecessarily.

SpeedwellBlue · 04/04/2024 17:55

If it was travelodge I probably wouldn't expect anything, but an expensive hotel. A bottle of wine wouldn't hurt them. If I was running a luxury gaff I'd offer it.

Judecb · 04/04/2024 17:58

If I'm staying at £800 pound a night hotel, I'd be pretty bloody cheesed off at being woken up unnecessarily. I'd have mentioned it to the manager and would possibly expect some kind of token as an apology.

If I was staying at a hotel that charged that much I’d just be grateful at such a luxury, that’s much more than most people can afford to spend on a hotel for a week.

Yes you’ve paid an extortionate amount of money per night and would expect top service, however it was an innocent mistake where you could’ve just gone back to sleep instead of complaining. To be fair if you can afford a hotel like that is free bottle of wine seems greedy, a simple apology should be enough.

That doesn't make sense. I wouldn't be 'grateful' to be spending top money and not receive top service to match.

I stayed in a fairly fancy hotel on Brighton seafront on NYE many moons ago. Didn’t get in until about 4am so didn’t have much sleep at all. At 8.30am if I recall correctly, there was a feckin fire alarm. Just a practice, no actual fire but they evacuated the hotel. Spent 20 mins stood out in the freezing cold and pissing rain wearing pyjamas until they let us back in. No I didn’t get back to sleep and had to check out at 11 before a gruesome 3.5 hour drive home. Now THAT was annoying.

NeedSomeHeadspace · 04/04/2024 18:13

I hope you get over your trauma soon. Really.

ElizainFrz · 04/04/2024 18:14

Sorry but these hotels are owned by multi millionaires and have huge profit margins. Ask and take the free breakfast or complimentary glass of bubbly, it’s not costing them anything

Mothmansknickers · 04/04/2024 18:16

If I'd paid that much for a room and was woken at 6, I'd be pissed off too. It takes me ages to get to sleep, dreaded menopause! If I don't have enough hours of rest, I'm a nightmare the next day.
I hope you're having a better experience today.

Of course they are. It's not a little B&B in Whitby where the owners are just about breaking even.

That makes no sense at all. I have paid for a service that I didn't receive. Why should I be happy with an apology? Would you be? Have you been in this situation?

That's not sensible having a fire alarm practice at 8.30!! They're normally after check-out time, for obvious reasons...

Edited

The irony is that hotels like Premier Inn have a better refund policy and customer service ethos than my hotel!!

But I didn't get an apology. Didn't you read my op?

And we have saved up for months for this. It's a special treat. I expect better service here than in a Premier Inn!

You wouldn’t get that in a Premier Inn because the alarm calls never work! 😂

Ok, now I think YBU.

Me too!

Monkey2001 · 04/04/2024 18:26

I agree with you, you are paying for luxury and got an interrupted night. Good customer service would mean an apology.

You could just have scrolled on past. Really.

I'm not traumatised. Don't be daft. I was annoyed.

No New Year’s Day early morning seemed like a really good way to piss all their guests off. I wasn’t amused. It wasn’t a mega posh hotel but nice enough and they’d ramped the prices up for NYE as expected.

Keeper11 · 04/04/2024 18:33

This happened to me recently only someone was banging on my door as they thought I should be on some coach! So I had to answer the door. AND the key failed most days resulting in having to queue up at reception to have the key reset. It was a pretty expensive hotel, but apart from “we are very sorry” there was no question of any compensation. But I didn’t ask - these things happen.

Gessy · 04/04/2024 18:38

Amazed at those who are criticising you. Yes, mistakes happen, human error etc, but sometimes the impact requires appropriate compensation. I’d be upset, if I stay at a good hotel I want a good night’s sleep. I don’t really drink, so eff the wine. I’d want a free meal or money off the bill. If it was any earlier I’d probably ask for a full refund. You haven’t paid good money to be tortured with sleep deprivation.

DisabledDemon · 04/04/2024 18:39

I don't think that an apology at breakfast would be out of order or a free glass of champagne before dinner. It wouldn't cost them much and you would hopefully be happy. More than that seems grabby.

hellsBells246 · 04/04/2024 18:41

For pp who are still advising me what items are appropriate for compensation, please see my update from about a day and a half ago!! 😂🙄 it's all done and dusted and we have left the hotel.

That's even worse. Were the staff getting their revenge on guests who has partied the night before?!
