Posh hotel un-asked for alarm at 6 - compensation?!

Staying in a v posh hotel. Think 900 Swiss francs per night...

Just got woken up by a bloody alarm. Picked up phone and got a recorded message saying we had asked for a 6am alarm. We hadn't!! It woke us both and now we can't get back to sleep.

Rang reception, who were puzzled about the alarm but not v apologetic.

AIBU to think they could offer a small gesture to apologise?? Eg a free bottle of wine?! Or AIB greedy and mistakes happen?!

@fungipie - Maybe- what I know for sure, I'd be lying there enjoying the luxury of this amazing Hotel room and planning what I would do for that amazing day in an amazing location.

Not moaning on MN. But maybe it's just me.

And I have never ever spent a holiday, never mind a night, in a Hotel at this ridiculous price. £850 is quite a price for most, and most would make the best of it.

Oh, FFS. Tell you what, why don't you let me know when you've booked a special night in a hotel that you're really looking forward to? I'll ring you at 6am, make sure to wake you up. Let's see how chilled you'd be then 🙄🙄

Top 4-5*** Grand Hôtel Majestic Montreux is 400 for a superior double with lake view.

So 900.- wonder where?

I'm glad to see you're so invested in this thread. But we're not in Montreux. It will take you some time to check the prices of all hotels in Switzerland. Enjoy!

Montreux is the most expensive on the Riviera, hence the choice for price comparison, for fun.

However I do think that some people must be perpetually disappointed if they're expecting 100% perfection, 100% of the time because when humans or technology are involved then it's just not going to happen.

Who even thinks this?

Things go wrong. That's life 🤷‍♀️ So a decent hotel will say " hey we're sorry - have a drink, a dessert, a coffee....on us " Its as old as time.

It's not the end of the world and no one died but it's a simple acknowledgement of respect and the contract that exists between the seller and the customer.

Exactly. I don't know why people are hyperbolizing the expectation of a little apology sweetner. It would be one thing if people thought that the error should mean the whole stay got comped: that would indeed be entitled. But a free breakfast or round of drinks? No problem. I personally have demanded a voucher from Vestiaire Collective because two orders of mine went wrong: I wasn't out money but I was inconvenienced and my time wasted, so I got on to their customer services and told them they needed to make it right. I got a 15% off voucher. If you don't ask, you don't get.

People checking hotel prices in Switzerland in the hope of catching OP out? That's insane!

@MsLuxLisbon ,

There is a world of difference between wealth and class.

It is grace that distinguishes them. The classy don’t need or want the free drinks. They forgive an honest mistake and find that when they return to the hotel, they get greeted with genuine warmth and nothing is too much.

This.

Love that this thread has gone wild. I've been following it all day😂

not catching out- but for those who know the region, fair to wonder as even the poshest Hotels are not that expensive. Funny really!

Justpontificating · 03/04/2024 21:50

Dh watching border force 🤯
Ive finished my book 😢
So time to waste checking hotels in Switzerland

These came up as the most expensive hotels in a Google search.
Prices are per night and £850 isn’t the most expensive either.

OP hasn't said which region of Switzerland she's in, has she? There are hotels more expensive than 900 CHF in Switzerland.

fungipie · 03/04/2024 21:57

She said it was in French speaking area, which is a small part of Switzerland. So I looked at one of the most expensive area I know well.

Not important- but it was fun toc check. The Montreux Grand has hosted some of the greatest stars, and a luxury room is about half the sum. Just a bit of fun to check.

'Not catching out?' @fungipie, are you actually insane? WTF else would be the point of you spending time looking up hotel prices BUT to catch me out???

This is actual insanity. You are bonkers.

And btw, you're not Booking.com, because you're wrong. There are plenty of expensive hotels.

And 'those who know the region'? You didn't even remember it was an hour ahead of the UK. 😂😂

Not that the price of the shagging hotels is the point...

I have stayed in a hotel in Switzerland where 900 Swiss Francs is in their of lower price range; most rooms are more.

fungipie · 03/04/2024 22:03

The point is customer service. Somehow a mistake was made. An apology was given and compensation in the form of drinks at the bar.

Great.

I checked. She didn't say she's in a french speaking area, although she may be. She said she speaks French. My experience of Switzerland is that you can get documents in french in non french speaking areas on account of it being one of the official languages. Like in Belgium you get lots of documents in french and Flemish wherever you are in the country.

You're not much of a detective - especially since there are hotels which are more expensive!

Well the OP got an apology and some drinks to apologise and if you'd read the whole post of which only a small part was quoted, I do actually say that OP doesn't come across like that, and I totally agree that was appropriate - so I wasn't 'hyperbolizing' the expectation of a 'little apology sweetener' - It was a general observation from my time in customer service that some people really do expect that perfection and get really bent out of shape when it doesn't happen, and there have been posts on this thread saying for the amount paid perfection should be expected - people do think that way and expect it, I have come across it myself more often than you'd think.
But where humans are involved there will inevitably be mistakes, it's how they're dealt with that are important, but for some people the fact the mistake has been made is something they cannot get past.

@hellsBells246 no, you didn't come across like that on here - some others definitely do though!

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 03/04/2024 22:53

Ok so some posters are questioning why OP is spending her holiday MNing while at the same time so invested they are playing Inspector Clouseu about her holiday? Grin MN at its most bonkers best

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 03/04/2024 22:55

Yeah, same! I'm also partial to a negroni.

A Swiftie telling someone else to get a grip! Priceless.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 03/04/2024 22:59

Oooh yes Negroni's are also lovely. I had an orange blossom one a few weeks ago which wasn't as bitter as a regular one. Headache in a glass Grin

Soowoo · 03/04/2024 23:01

I think you were perfectly reasonable to expect an apology - and a small token of compensation
