Is a 28” waist really small?

So I bought jeans in this size as an insensitive to fit into them.

A friend who I would consider as slim (she’s also tall 5 foot 10) said that’s a really small size like teenage girl size.

Mine fluctuates between 25-26 inches. I’m 34 but very active.

www.statista.com/statistics/333865/bmi-of-individual-by-gender-in-england-uk/

We are progressively getting fatter. The average person is overweight. We have a skewed view of what is a healthy waist size.

lechatnoir · 30/03/2024 11:20

I have a 28" waist at 5ft7 and in no way would you describe me as skinny - big arse & thighs Grin. I wear a size 10 top /12 on bottom and sometimes they are tight (39" hips!) I'm on the upper end of healthy weight range so could do with losing a stone which would probably take me down to a 26/7" waist but would still not be skinny. I had a 24" waist in my teens and early 20's and was never less than a size 10 usually a 12. I now wear vintage size 14.

It's really not that small.

Are they waist size 28' or just size 28?. As there is a difference.

For an example in Levis I'm 26 (they size in " waist)
High street jeans I'm size 32.
Some other sizes in an 8.

I bought a pair of Stravidarius jeans which I assume were waist 28 as the description wasn't great and I tried to go by what the model was wearing. They would fit a 10 year old I think. ..

Tbh even Levis sizing is a bit wonky (I have Levis 501 90s in size 26 )that I cant zip up, so I have to try on jeans before I buy.
.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 30/03/2024 11:42

I'm 5'8.5 with a 27 inch waist. I'm definitely not skinny, possibly would be described as slim but only with my clothes on

It depends on build too. Not just height.

Alwayswonderedwhy · 30/03/2024 11:52

It's a size 10. I miss being able to wear 28" waist jeans.

claramund · 30/03/2024 11:55

It's size 10 approx, so not teeny tiny, but not big either. I have a 26 inch waist and my waist is a size 8 (rest of me is a size 10!)
My teenage daughter (15) is a size 6 and has a waist size of around 24 inches. I had a similar size waist at that age.

KeenGoldCat · 30/03/2024 11:56

I think of it as pretty average and nothing out of the ordinary. It's the size I buy and Im 5'3 and a size 8/10.
Mum and family friends of her age talk about having 24 inch waists in the 60s!

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 30/03/2024 11:57

There is always a variance with Levi's jeans because they have multiple factories around the world. I own umpteen pairs, and even within the same style the sizing differs by an inch or two in the waist. You can't just assume that because you own one pair of 501's in 28" waist and they fit you like a second skin that every single pair of 28" 501's will.

It's even more noticeable with vintage pairs, and especially with their XX products because they are cut using the original patterns, then you have raw denim which will change size depending on how the wearer decides to clean them.

I'm a jeans nerd 😐

soupfiend · 30/03/2024 11:58

I sizes and measurements are all over the shop

My waist is 35 inches but I buy size 14s in a shop

Presumably when my waist is 33, that will be a size 12 and then 31 inches I might be a 10?

My waist shouldnt be more than 32 for my height (at the max)

I dont think sizing is very accurate

claramund · 30/03/2024 11:59

Sparklfairy · 30/03/2024 10:01

28 waist used to be a size 14.

It did!

I'm a size 8 (around 26 inches in modern sizes) but wear vintage skirts from the 70s/80s which are labelled size 10 or 12 and 26 inches. The further back you go the smaller the waist, I've found.

Itisnearlyspring · 30/03/2024 12:01

My natural waist is 24.5" but I wear size 10 28" because my navel is a lot bigger. I think it depends a lot on your body shape as well as your weight.

Terribletooths · 30/03/2024 12:03

at 5’10, proportional? I am envious you can probably buy the 28 size in most shops/ jeans brands.

it’s hard when you go below 25/24 and you’re short under 5ft. 😂

lol

Illbefinejustbloodyfine · 30/03/2024 12:06

But size 28 jeans wouldn't fit someone with a 28inch waist.

I was very very slim as a teen and wore 28inch levis

RoseMoose · 30/03/2024 11:15

I would love to have a 28-inch waist, I would look slim. Mine is currently 33 inches.
However, it isn't a tiny teenage size. My 14 year old has a 23-inch waist - she is tiny due to the amount of ballet she does, it does actually worry me that she is so little.
I think she must take after her dad, who has a 31-inch waist as a 50 year old man.

My 15 year old teenager with a 24 inch waist does a lot of ballet too, so perhaps there's something in that. Most of the girls her age, in her classes, are similar slim. I do a couple of hours ballet a week too, so it definitely plays a part. Good for the core, especially pointe!

NancyPickford · 30/03/2024 12:07

My friend and I were just talking about this yesterday. We are old now, but when we were teenagers in the late 60s/early 70s, I was a size 12 and measured 34-24-36. She was a 10 and 32-22-34. No one nowadays believes that these waist measurements were normal!

asidream · 30/03/2024 12:09

Depends on your body shape. I'm an apple and the rest of my body is skinny, but my waist always tips over the recommended size unless I'm literally starving myself to the point the rest of my body is bordering on skeletal. It's 35 inches atm and I know it's not brilliant, but I'm a size 10/12 and it is super annoying.

You can't really spot reduce fat, cardio plus weight training only does so much if like me, your body is simply determined to hang on to weight around your middle.

Yetagain35 · 30/03/2024 12:11

I’m 5ft10 and would have been wearing that size as a teen . I was very slim at that point and I would have had a belt pulling all the excess material in at the back . Proportionally I think 28 is pretty slim but if short not so much

Justrolledmyeyesoutloud · 30/03/2024 12:22

I would get one leg in that!!

BigBarm · 30/03/2024 12:22

Sizes don’t mean anything these days, especially in jeans. I was size 10-12 30 years ago, but now I’m older and a bit fatter my clothes range from size 6-10. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I bought some new jeans in Uniqlo yesterday - got a 26, the 28 were too big. I have just measured my waist and it’s 30”!

fluffycloudalert · 30/03/2024 12:23

For someone who's 5'10" it would seem small, yes.

MsCactus · 30/03/2024 12:26

I'm interested in this - I am petite and small framed, 5ft 1"

Before pregnancy, at a healthy weight, my waist was 24". As a teenager, underweight, it was 19".

Now a year postpartum it's 26", 25" on a good day and I feel really sad about this fact.

Not sure if I have body dysmorphia, but I don't think I look that slim with a 26" waist - and when I was 28" newly postpartum I had a very pronounced stomach.

I think it depends on your frame size though. I imagine a 28" waist would be slim on someone taller than me

My mum( now in her eighties) was always a size 12 with the same measurements as you. She has stayed a similar size and now wears an 8 and even then they're sometimes too big.
I had a 23/24 inch waist as a young woman in the eighties and wore a size 10, at 5 ft 5 I weighed around 8 stones.
I have a M&S skirt from around the nineties which has the St Michael label and has the waist measurement printed on it, size 12, 26" waist. Unfortunately can no longer get in it!

NerdWhoEatsMedlar · 30/03/2024 12:42

28 waist jeans have nothing to do with a woman's waist measurement.

28 is a man's size and the hip measurement equates to a woman's size 10.
Jeans are a weird item of clothing as they have stuck to the men's / unisex sizing. I'd expect my waist to be a few inches less than my jean size.
