Is a 28” waist really small?

So I bought jeans in this size as an insensitive to fit into them.

A friend who I would consider as slim (she’s also tall 5 foot 10) said that’s a really small size like teenage girl size.

Isn’t that just a size 10 - so not tiny.

TheFlis · 30/03/2024 10:50

I’m 5”8 and size 10. Now in my 40”s and have been wearing Levi’s in a 28” waist and 34” leg since university.

StJulian2023 · 30/03/2024 10:51

Yes depends on height and build. I’m 5’10 and wear levis 29 waist 34 leg, my family are all long and lean, eat a lot and hardly stop moving 😅

When my waist was last 28 inch I was overweight by BMI.

When I was 9.7 stone and a BMI of about 23 I think I had a waist size of 28.

BMI shouldn’t be looked at in isolation.
There are some people with a “healthy BMI” but their waists are too big according to guidelines.

They are more at risk from certain health issues than someone with say an average body fat % and a waist that falls within the guidelines, but has a higher BMI.

Equivo · 30/03/2024 10:53

I'm 5ft 8. When I was right at the bottom of the healthy BMI range (and about 22% body fat) my waist was 28 inches. So for you at 5ft 6, depending on your body shape it'd probably be a nice healthy size and weight. Whereas it'd almost certainly be underweight for someone 5ft 10.

TheSnowyOwl · 30/03/2024 10:53

My comfy jeans are 28” Levi’s and I’ve put on lots of weight since my skinny teenage days. I’m definitely a fairly normal size at the school gate these days with plenty who are slimmer than me.

Octopussingthieves · 30/03/2024 10:01

At 5'10 it's too small.

No it's not. Some of us are just built that way.

Comefromaway · 30/03/2024 10:54

I was trying jeans on last weekend. I’m a size 12 & a 29 waist in Levi’s.

TheForgetfulCat · 30/03/2024 10:54

I’m also 5’10 and have never been waif like but was a size 10 in my teens/early twenties and had a 28-30” waist. At 48 it’s three or four inches bigger and while I’m trying I doubt I will see 28” again. 30 would be nice.

So depending on your age and height I’d say 28” jeans were … aspirational 😀

Misthios · 30/03/2024 10:54

Buying a pair of jeans which don't fit and might never fit is crazy behaviour. Nobody cares how teeny-tiny your waist is or is not.

Ihateboris · 30/03/2024 10:56

I'm 5ft 6in, dress size 6/8, and have a 28 inch waist.

Robinbuildsbears · 30/03/2024 10:57

It's mostly unhelpful to go by just waist measurements, because there's so much variation in body shapes. When I was a teenager, I had a waist measurement of 28" at 5'3", with a BMI of 19.5.

ManchesterBeatrice · 30/03/2024 10:57

It depends on the rest of you @femfemlicious

I'm a big butt and 30f ⌛️

Exactly the same as me.

Shopper727 · 30/03/2024 10:59

My Levi’s as a young woman (19-22) were 28/30 and I wasn’t skinny slim yes it’s not tiny tiny also depends how tall you are etc
but never buy stuff that doesn’t fit, how do you know when you do lose weight they’ll sit right etc?

mitogoshi · 30/03/2024 10:59

It's fairly slim but not particularly so. Dd is 24 in jeans, I'm 32 and a 16

baileybrosbuildingandloan · 30/03/2024 10:59

Times have changed so much. In 1979 I was a size 14, considered fat, with a 26" waist.

Our great grandmas had 18" waists.

I wish I was that 'fat' size 14 now.

Roserunner · 30/03/2024 10:59

I'm a 29 in Levi's and about a size 12 everywhere else. I'm overweight and have another 8lb to lose to be a healthy weight. I'm trying to lose weight and measure myself regular and my waist is around 28-29 inches. My hips are a lot bigger tho!!

Waitingfordoggo · 30/03/2024 11:01

@TextureSeeker I’m narrow hipped and I’m with you on the hip flaps in clothes. Really annoying!

PeopleAreToads · 30/03/2024 11:02

I wouldn’t say it’s particularly small, I bought jeans in a 24 waist yesterday and am average height and within the healthy weight range. But everyone’s build/proportions are different

Sparklfairy · 30/03/2024 10:01

28 waist used to be a size 14.

A 32 is a 14.

Years ago l used to buy Levi’s w32 L 32.

l was a consistent 14. This was 30 years ago.

TitInATrance · 30/03/2024 11:05

Last year’s 28” Levi’s are annoyingly baggy on me considering that’s my actual measurement if I breathe in - I think they stretch. I’m now wearing 26”. I’m a 10/12, 2DC and don’t consider myself to be particularly small.

In H&M I’m a 14.

The average woman in 1896 was 153.4cm or 5 feet. The average woman in 1996 was 164.4cm or 5 foot 4 inches.

We are better nourished and are not routinely dying of TB or other infections.

RoseMoose · 30/03/2024 11:15

I would love to have a 28-inch waist, I would look slim. Mine is currently 33 inches.
However, it isn't a tiny teenage size. My 14 year old has a 23-inch waist - she is tiny due to the amount of ballet she does, it does actually worry me that she is so little.
I think she must take after her dad, who has a 31-inch waist as a 50 year old man.
