Does anybody recognise this as a bible story

Long story but my 6 year old has told me that at school they heard a bible story that roughly went:

-There were goodies and baddies

-God told the baddies to kill the goodies… but there were many more baddies than goodies

-So the goodies threw “fire cups” at the baddies until the baddies got so scared that they had to kill themselves…..

Is this roughly recognisable to anyone?

(I will be taking it up with the school tomorrow).

I’m literally just looking to hear from anybody that might be able to give me half a clue if this is a Bible story? Or a bit of one ? Or possibly something she may have got mixed up ? (Although she didn’t know about people killing themselves as a concept until she got told about this , apparently at school)

Thanks

Could be the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, they had burning sulphur thrown down on them and the baddies outnumbered the goodies, but nobody killed themselves.

Thanks, I will have a look.

This is the story of Gideon defeating the Midianites. Judges chapter 7

Love thy neighbour, anyone? 😁

Yep. "The Sword of the Lord and of Gideon!" Judges 9 verse 19 onwards.

That's a NT concept that the OT would have had no truck with. Smiting, that's what the OT's about.

UnbeatenMum · 28/01/2024 13:47

Sounds like Gideon although a bit misunderstood - the Midianites were confused and disoriented by a middle of the night ambush and killed each other in battle, not scared into suicide.

MissyB1 · 28/01/2024 13:47

Old Testament I guess? We never had anything from OT at our school (Catholic) we followed the New Testament only. I now work in a private C of E school, again OT is never mentioned.

EezyOozy · 28/01/2024 13:48

Yea it seems like Gideon and the midianites. So the Midianites didn’t actually “commit suicide”…. they killed their mates/each other. Lovely. All makes sense now anyway.

Thanks, I never would have found it.

The old testament is brutal.
No wonder they had to write a more palatable sequel and hide the original at the back of the cupboard.

@MissyB1 thank you for your comment.

Forgive my complete ignorance, but is the old Testament more gory? Is that why it’s not talked about normally ?

Didn’t / don’t they cover Genesis at all?

I think we mainly did NT stuff at my C of E school, but we definitely did Genesis and I think Ruth as well.

noblegiraffe · 28/01/2024 13:51

What an odd story to choose.

Usually from the Old Testament they talk about Noah and his lovely boat of fluffy animals (ignoring the bit where God destroys everyone else).

Lovingitallnow · 28/01/2024 13:52

Yeah killed themselves meaning killed each other. She might still be unclear about suicide as a concept. My 7 year old asked me why people wanted to kill themselves. I nearly had a heart attack about what to say. So I asked why, and he said we'll all be dead if we don't reduce reuse and recycle. People
who don't are killing themselves.

MissyB1 · 28/01/2024 13:53

Actually we did do the creation of the world but we were taught not to take it literally. In the school I work in we don’t even do that bit.

eggandonion · 28/01/2024 13:54

My primary teachers were mostly Baptist and Presbyterian. We had equal ot and nt religion. I hated the violence but loved the idea of random prophets wandering round the ot. Ruth and Naiomi were goodie though.

That why we have the New Testament.

EmpressaurusOfTheScathingTinsel · 28/01/2024 13:55

The Old Testament has some nice stories in it about men protecting themselves by handing women over to be raped & murdered. See also Lot’s daughters getting him drunk so they could get themselves pregnant by him. Not a book for kids to read unsupervised.

Here you go, a pretty good overview of the OT. And yes, it's a lot more violent than the NT

This. Really terrible. Rape, incest, gore and violence.

Would be PG13 at least, 15 probably.

Yes it is and it was pre Jesus obviously. So the Jesus birth was the start of a “new covenant” between God and the people - so I was taught.

Lot said he would hand his virgin daughters over to a bunch of drunken men to rape so that they wouldn't rape two men he had just met.

And this was supposed to be a good and noble thing he did.
