Does anybody recognise this as a bible story

Long story but my 6 year old has told me that at school they heard a bible story that roughly went:

-There were goodies and baddies

-God told the baddies to kill the goodies… but there were many more baddies than goodies

-So the goodies threw “fire cups” at the baddies until the baddies got so scared that they had to kill themselves…..

Is this roughly recognisable to anyone?

(I will be taking it up with the school tomorrow).

I’m literally just looking to hear from anybody that might be able to give me half a clue if this is a Bible story? Or a bit of one ? Or possibly something she may have got mixed up ? (Although she didn’t know about people killing themselves as a concept until she got told about this , apparently at school)

Thanks

Anyone would think the whole thing is made up.

shockeditellyou · 28/01/2024 16:05

The OT is metal AF, really. Judith and Holofernes, anyone?

suggestionsplease1 · 28/01/2024 16:09

The OT is brutal.

Our Religious Studies teacher asked us to draw a picture of a female biblical figure driving a tent peg through the head of a male biblical figure for homework one time. Can't remember their names but remember being told to do the drawing 🙈

I wouldn’t bother school. Your child’s interpretation only. Teachers busy enough

It's a lunch time club not an RE lesson. She can withdraw her child nothing to do with the teachers.
We had a child cowering in the playground once because Satan was going to get her. She had been to the Evangelical Community Church Sunday school. The church leaders were governors and had a group come in and take assembly once a month. I never accompanied my Reception class and used to ask them what is was about when they came back. They never knew which was a good thing imo.

A lot of girl power in that one, which is nice I suppose.

Mysticguru · 28/01/2024 16:31

EezyOozy · 28/01/2024 16:48

I suspect that wasn't really the message wanted to be got from the story.

I remember when I was given one of the David and Saul stories to teach to my 3-5 yos. The message the children were meant to get from it was "Be obedient to God". However the story was being obedient by going into battle. I refused because I said the children would take the message "God wants me to fight".
I did something nice and fluffy like "saying thank you to God". Much better and far more chance they get the right idea from it. (although the week I did communion with them, one child proceeded to give a very good run down about wine and alcohol and where it differed from just "juice". When I handed her back to her dad, otherwise known as the vicar, I told him any complaints about the lesson would be re-directed to him. 🤣 )

The problem was that it was following a scheme where the idea was every group from 0-2s up to adults were following the same story each week so they could talk about it. In theory that's a lovely idea. In practice, stories that are accessible with simple meanings for the under 7s, are totally boring for the teen plus; and stories that the teen plus age groups can really work at and enjoy are totally over the heads of the younger ones.

After that I totally ignored the lesson plans I was given and went my own way, and I think the children found it far better too.

Lot said he would hand his virgin daughters over to a bunch of drunken men to rape so that they wouldn't rape two men he had just met.

And this was supposed to be a good and noble thing he did.

Lot's daughters turn up in 1 stories. In one, he hands them over to a Sodomite mob to be raped. In the other, they get him drunk to "extract his seed".

There's a lot of horrendous stuff in the old Testament.

One of the stories that hasn't been mentioned yet is about a prophet who travelled from place to place, telling people about God.

As he approached one village, he was spotted by some boys who started laughing at him for being bald. The prophet was so angry that he prayed to God who promptly sent a huge she bear which tore the boys apart.

cariadlet · 28/01/2024 17:06

Turn up in 2 stories (I can't edit on my phone).

There are some hard-ass women in the OT. Judith, Jael, Deborah, Jezebel...

noblegiraffe · 28/01/2024 17:19

My children’s Bible had a full colour picture of Jezebel, head smashed open, being eaten by dogs.

I only discovered the Apocrypha as an adult. NotnC of E, Judith and Holofernes.

Seriously Op as well as withdrawing your child you should complain to HT and/or Governing Board. Extreme religious groups masquerading as some nice happy clappy fun activity for children have no place in a school, being validated by teachers and/or parents with a religious agenda. If it's a state school you can complain to the local authority too.

I got caught up in something very similar at about 8-9 years old, sold as an after school club singing songs about 'If you're happy and you know it clap your hands' and reading fun little stories about God. Also run by people with a connection to the school so hiding in plain sight. I didn't care about God, I just wanted the fizzy drink and chocolate biscuits, which we definitely didn't get at home.

In actual fact they were fundamentalist evangelical Christians & before long I was spouting a lot of shit about my (single) mother being a sinner and having nightmares about her dying in the flames of hell. Then there was the very creepy speaking in tongues that frightened the shit out of me. Luckily like you Mum (eventually) realised what was going on and pulled me out.

Other posters are laughing about the OT, but it isn't at all funny that people like this are being allowed to run a lunchtime club on school grounds.

@MissyB1 thank you for your comment.

Forgive my complete ignorance, but is the old Testament more gory? Is that why it’s not talked about normally ?

OT is very much part of the Christian faith and most churches and schools will teach stories from it. However it is important to ground the stories in the context of the time and to remember that not everything in the bible is designed to be lauded as a good idea! Some things are cautionary tales.

Dancerprancer19 · 28/01/2024 18:14

Even as Christian parent I would want to know a bit more about what the aim was. Even in evangelical Sunday schools we wouldn’t choose to teach every story from the bible to primary children. Some are more 15 or 18 certificate!

NancyPickford · 28/01/2024 18:15

I was taught RE in a Catholic school and we only read the New Testament. Usually the Gospel of Luke.

jasflowers · 28/01/2024 18:22

This is absolutely horrendous and should never in any form be taught to young impressionable minds.

There are plenty of very palatable Old and New Testament stories to tell children, sounds like whoever your childs teacher is, has a bit of a fundamentalist streak about him or her, either that or they hate kids.

PurpleBugz · 28/01/2024 18:30

Sounds like Gideon to me. I never liked that one

RoseAndRose · 28/01/2024 18:34

Could be worse.

They could be studying The Song Of Solomon and drawing pictures

SpongeBobSquarePantaloons · 28/01/2024 18:36

It sounds like Waco 🙃

I’m surprised you stopped at the Iron Age - I’d have gone up to at least the Tudors and possibly beyond

Argh yes the Tudors were bloody horrible.

They don't come up much in the OT though. Thankfully. 😂

Georgyporky · 28/01/2024 19:43

Just tell DC that the bible is a fairy story.
