Does anybody recognise this as a bible story

EezyOozy · 28/01/2024 13:23

Long story but my 6 year old has told me that at school they heard a bible story that roughly went:

-There were goodies and baddies

-God told the baddies to kill the goodies… but there were many more baddies than goodies

-So the goodies threw “fire cups” at the baddies until the baddies got so scared that they had to kill themselves…..

Is this roughly recognisable to anyone?

(I will be taking it up with the school tomorrow).

I’m literally just looking to hear from anybody that might be able to give me half a clue if this is a Bible story? Or a bit of one ? Or possibly something she may have got mixed up ? (Although she didn’t know about people killing themselves as a concept until she got told about this , apparently at school)

Thanks

@MissyB1 thank you for your comment.

Forgive my complete ignorance, but is the old Testament more gory? Is that why it’s not talked about normally ?

Yeah.
I am an omnipotent god who created the universe and has unlimited power.

I can do anything I want to. For centuries I have been a merciless, blood thirsty monster that smites and strikes you down for the sins of others and has fucking weird rules about fabrics and shit but I see that you've stopped liking that so here's what I'm going to do. I'm going to send part of myself down in human form. Please stick a circle of really thorny branches on my head, nail me to a tree and stick a dagger in me.

That way, I, an omnipotent god with the power to do anything, will no longer have to punish you for what your great great great great grandad did. Yes I know I could just have decided to stop doing that, what with the unlimited power and all but what the hell, one last hurrah. 🤷

PS - I'll still want the skin on the end of your newborn sons' penises though.

They're my trophies. 👍

Yeah, the old testament God was a megalomaniac Tyrant to say the least.. and it wasn't just bad folk he struck down 🤨

Lot said he would hand his virgin daughters over to a bunch of drunken men to rape so that they wouldn't rape two men he had just met.

And this was supposed to be a good and noble thing he did.

Yes. And the other time, a woman who was a concubine left her husband / master & went back to her parents. He followed & talked her into going back to him. On the way home they stayed with a man, and the men of the city came demanding the stranger so they could have sex with him.

The man gave them his concubine instead. They raped her all night & in the morning she was dead on the doorstep. He chopped her body into 12 pieces, one for each of the twelve tribes, & started shouting about what a terrible thing they’d done.

Nobody seemed to think that this bloke was an evil bastard, although obviously he was.

Job springs instantly to mind.
God and satan seem equally awful bastards in that story.

EezyOozy · 28/01/2024 14:20

Oh dear. Seems a very odd choice of story then

This is a Christian charity that have got funding to do an activity “lunch club” once a week on our school.

it is a rural school with very little else going on. It is not a religious school. most of the children attend this club however as they do crafts and get given chocolate biscuits. I was assured that the religious messaging was nothing heavy (eg the Good Samaritan) .. my daughter loves crafts and her best friend goes so I let her go.

One of the school dads is a paid employee of this charity, and is also in the PTA so I think that was his “in”. Oh and his wife is one of the teachers…

so this morning over pancakes my just 6 year old is spouting garbled, brutal Old Testament stories about people being tricked into to murdering each other ?!!

I have done some research re the church that these people are linked to is an Evangelical church… is that quite hardcore ?

I don’t think she’ll be going back. There are only two in the school that don’t go! (Now 3). Because there are so few other things going on!

oh well, at least that mystery is solved !

OP an Evangelical church group? Yes some evangelicals can be very fire and brimstone! My in laws church is like that - they love it all 🙄🙄
They nearly had a fit when Dh and I went to a Catholic Church one Christmas, they phoned Dh to warn him “to be very careful around those Catholics” 😂

Love thy neighbour, anyone? 😁

That's a NT concept that the OT would have had no truck with. Smiting, that's what the OT's about.*

Leviticus ch19 v18 love thy neighbour as thyself.

It's well known the Bible, Torah and Qur'an contain various stories of good versus evil. It would be best to discuss your concerns with the school.

I'm agnostic but it is interesting that faith schools often perform academically higher than state schools. Nigerian Christians at my sons school perform very, very well academically, better than most of the white kids.

eggandonion · 28/01/2024 14:40

My kids...Im in Ireland...had a postal Bible school thing. They provided worksheets with a story and comprehension and arty bit. The teachers loved it.
At the end of year the organisers appeared in person for an evening event with prizes and squash and biscuits. It was a bit strange but mostly parables.

UrHusbandIsAnAi · 28/01/2024 14:41

😂😂😂

Fabulous summary. Especially the crabs.

The Stone Age through to the Iron Age was a bit of a gore fest.

Phineyj · 28/01/2024 14:46

Oh gosh. Get her out before they get to King David.

I was singing in the choral version a while back so I idly googled the bible section.

That is some heavy duty slaughter!

I’m surprised you stopped at the Iron Age - I’d have gone up to at least the Tudors and possibly beyond

Definitely remove your daughter but formally complain too, this evangelical group should not be running sessions in the school at lunchtime.

Leviticus ch19 v18 love thy neighbour as thyself.

Assuming thy neighbour is a bloke, presumably.

Thisisnottheend · 28/01/2024 15:17

Oh god indeed, please tell the school, I had a childhood of being fed such delights such as it’s women’s role is to marry and reproduce and that every non Christian will go to hell because they “will have been given the chance at some point of their lives” to hear the word of god, all based on “what it says in the bible”. I believe in god and am a Christian but if it’s “that sort” of evangelical group , they like to indoctrinate people early! In this day and age of multi faith societies it’s really inappropriate.

Love thy neighbour is from the OT.

Not saying that the Bible is all lovey-dovey. Not saying that all that rape and violence was right. Not saying that the Bible - all Bibles, for that matter - wasn't written by men, through a male lens.

Just that Jesus did not invent Love Thy Neighbour. He was a Jewish bloke pointing out that other Jewish people weren't following their own rules (such as Love Thy Neighbour) and that he had a new way to do things.

I hate this attitude. If my child comes home thinking something erroneous, the teaching was poor. The child's interpretation is the point of education, surely. If the children end up 'knowing' something completely wrong, it's not the children's fault.

The school is the one allowing the club to be run on their premises, though. It doesn’t sound at all appropriate to be (badly) teaching small children some of the gorier bits of the Old Testament

pasteloblong · 28/01/2024 15:57

They'd be better off teaching the NT. The OT is more adventurous, but it's not for the fainthearted. I think the brutality was more representative of the times it was set in rather than that it being a desirable way to live and treat others, hence the NT.

Yes this is how I feel about it.
