True Crime Podcasts

Can anyone recommend any good ones?

I've just finished Down the Hill (thought it would never end at one point 😂) and did the Lucy Letby podcast and the subsequent Trial ones by Caroline Cheetham.

Started "vanished" on impact podcasts but not the biggest fan of the style of it / the guy that presents it to be honest.

I started Casefile not long ago from episode 1 (2016) and it's the Australian guy.

Thank you. I wonder if I am mixing this up with another podcast. The one I am thinking of had an American man narrating, he had quite a soothing voice.

Josh Hallmark? He has a very soothing voice.

He did a very long series abut Isaac Keyes.

All the people (rightly) recommending Serial, it's worth listening to the current series about it on Truth and Justice. A very in-depth analysis, although the host can take a bit of getting used to!

T&J has covered a lot of the cases mentioned in this thread in great depth.

I believe there is a fairly recent update/development in the Delphi/Down the Hill case. It's a while since I listened to the podcast so not sure if the update has been added.

Sword and Scale changed presenter I think...? Not 100% sure but that rings a bell..

I don't like one-off stories so avoid them but in addition to those already mentioned:
Believe in Magic
Filthy Ritual
Intrigue - there are several series - some better than others
Into the Dirt
Sweet Bobby

Happy Face
Dr Death

Going West
Death in Ice Valley
The Prosecutors
Cold Case Files

Real are a series of missing person / unsolved murder podcasts that are brilliant.

Till Death do us part
Over My Dead Body
The Thing About Pam
My Fugitive Dad

I seem to go for the Australian podcasts - Casefile is excellent and so well-researched (but like a PP I sometimes tend to drift off listening to the host's soothing monotone), then The Lady Vanishes and The Teacher's Pet.

West Cork for a non-Aussie podcast.

ASwimADay · 09/01/2024 20:02

@NYnewname they haven't updated down the hill since the arrest in 2022 which is a shame. I'm wondering if they will resurrect it for the trial in October.

‘Who the Hell is Hamish’ is another intriguing Ozzie podcast - I agree, the Australians make good true crime podcasts.

bad people

PossumintheHouse · 09/01/2024 20:13

I forgot to mention Explore With Us and Crime Scene 2 Courtroom, both on YouTube.
The former looks into extremely interesting, often less heard of cases in huge detail (some individual videos are film length) and the latter has researched the Lucy Letby case in great detail and offers some interesting insight.

CloseYourMouthLynn · 09/01/2024 20:29

I like Seeing Red, the presenters can be a bit annoying at times. but the cases are interesting and there's no adverts. The No Sleep podcast tells scary stories which are really good. Twisted Britain is also quite good and covers largely unheard of cases. Love true crime podcasts, my husband thinks I'm weird!

trakehner · 09/01/2024 20:48

I agree with PPs that many of the Australian true crime podcasts are brilliant, particularly The Lady Vanishes, The Teacher's Pet, Shandee's Story.

I absolutely love a well researched deep dive series and particularly if there is a resolution to the case at the end. I have listened to so so many but a couple off the top of my head that I really recommend are:

Catching Melanie's Killer - this one is close to home (literally) for me as I grew up in Bath and Melanie Road was a few years above me at my school. I also know the Detective who eventually solved the case (which had been stone cold for so many years), and the personal toll that her dedication to doing so took on her own family life.

Your Own Backyard - a cold case basically solved by the podcast and ending in a successful prosecution of a serial rapist and murderer.

ASwimADay · 09/01/2024 20:53

My husband also thinks I'm weird but I love them!! There are soooo many to try!

I’ve been listening to British Murders lately. They are short episodes but I quite enjoy the way it’s presented.

Other than that my go to’s are Redhanded, Seeing Red, The Prosecutors, Murder with my husband, Real Crime Profile, All killa no filla.

IsabelleSE19 · 09/01/2024 21:28

Glad to see a couple of people mention Death in Ice Valley - I'm not sure exactly why but that one really stayed with me. So atmospheric with the sound and music, and a fascinating mystery.

Small town dicks

TM1979 · 09/01/2024 22:47

Apologies, I thought there was a new host on Casefile. Sounds so different now.

IHatesMeecesToPieces · 09/01/2024 22:49

Have to mention True Crime Obsessed - the presenters are very funny! There are hundreds of episodes...I started on the Action Class Park one which was great.

Triflelife · 09/01/2024 22:52

I’ve been listening to The Prosecutors and enjoying it. Started off as someone on MN recommended the episodes they did covering the Adnan Syed conviction- the way they presented it completed changed my mind on that.

Bit of a derail...do you search for each title mentioned previously or is there a podcast app or website I can follow?

(Sorry, digital tourist here! I remember when I was a librarian and we got all the past copies of the Guardian on CD . It was magic 😳☺️)
