You may have heard the dreadfully sad news that lovely Mumsnetter Mowly77 died on November 18th. Cancer is a devastating, insidious and indiscriminate disease. Life has been very cruel to them all. Her daughter is still very little, only 5 this year. Bless her heart. Mowly77 had been organising the Stage 4 Cancer thread on Mumsnet, not a place anyone wants to be, but she did so with resilience, rage, humour, alongside absolute love and support.

We are so glad we can make a Woolly Hug, we hope it may give whatever comfort it can. There will be love crafted into every stitch. We want it to be a celebration, tribute and to help her daughter keep memories.

So we are now asking for help once again. We shall need crafters and donors of funds and wool, can you help us? We’d be so grateful. Thank you so much.

Important crafting info
Squares to be six inches, using 4mm needles or hook. Please knot off VERY carefully when finishing or changing colour and sew your ends in, thank you! No blocking please, makes it much easier to join squares.

Simple or complex, made by beginner or expert, we genuinely welcome them all. It really is the love and thought that counts.

Ideas from her wonderful friends.
Initials are F and T
They LOVED cats, so all the cats please!
The family live at the seaside, so anything there please.
Her relatives are from the US, so a flag would be good.
Books/newspaper, typewriter would be good, she was a journalist.
She loved doughnuts, so this could be a fun square.
She loved music, particularly Madonna and Kate Bush.
She often wore red lipstick
Big bright flowers - she had a big coat she wore on the beach, covered in these.
Parks, countryside - she loved walking

The Colours
Sky and sea blue
Greens
Rich purples

Then to create the above ideas, so accents/ not whole squares
Cat colours, whatever you need for cats, greys, orange, black, browns etc
Red, just this one please Drops Merino Extra Fine DK 11, Crimson red.
Yellow, this one please.. Drops merino extra fine DK no 24 ‘light yellow’ can be bought here..
Pinks

(Please shout if you need any others to achieve this)

The Yarn we will be Using….
Debbie Bliss Rialto DK only available on Love Crafts
Drops Merino Extra Fine DK
Jenny Watson Pure Merino DK
Katia Merino 100% DK
King Cole Luxury Merino DK
Patons Merino Extrafine DK

Just from the brands listed please because we know they combine for wash and wear. If you still have any of our wools that have been discontinued - Artesano Superwash Merino DK, Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK or James C. Brett Pure Merino DK in your stash, please do use them.

It is very nearly Christmas and we know this is a very busy time, but are keen to get underway. We will have a last posting date of January 27th, so plenty of time we hope. Posting will be Teddington, please message if you need the address. If you'd like to include a card for her family , please send with your squares. And please don't forget to include your name!

Thank you lovely crafters

Thinking of wonderful Mowly77. Thanks

I will do some squares

TheBucktoothedGirlFromLuxembourg · 20/12/2023 15:48

My condolences to all who knew and loved Mowly77.

I can make a square or two and I have suitable yarn. I'll send a PM.

TwigTheWonderKid · 20/12/2023 15:48

You honestly wouldn't want anything I can knit and after a post-chemo steroid induced shopping extravaganza at 3am this morning, I am totally skint so can't contribute yarn. But as one of Mowly's fellow Stage 4 cancer board members who was so lifted by her fantastic writing and her gallows humour and so saddened by her passing, I am so grateful to you all for your huge generosity and kindness towards her family.

MadisonAvenue · 20/12/2023 15:56

Such sad news, please count me in. I’ve sent you a PM.

Fairyfellowsmasterstroke · 20/12/2023 15:57

Good Afternoon, such sad news.

I would be happy to make some squares for such an amazing lady.

I have some Drops Merino Extra Fine DK in green but would appreciate it if I could be sent anything in blue or purple.

I can certainly make some squares with her initials on and, just for fun, I'm happy to try a cats face.

K+P - I'll PM you.

gotomomo · 20/12/2023 16:06

I can't knit or crochet but I can buy wool for someone who has these skills but cannot afford to buy wool. I'm sure I'm not alone in wanting to contribute. If a mechanism could be established please let me know

MrsFloof · 20/12/2023 16:09

Thanks so much everyone and Knotty & Pistey, so kind of you all. She had a black cat but loved all cats and always wanted news of my cat Mr Floof whose a huge fluffy Maine Coon tabby.

IoWfairyonthechristmastree · 20/12/2023 16:10

Such sad news. I’d be happy to help if you could send some yarn. I’m free in early Jan so could make it in time. All my love to family and friends of mowly77 x

Iwantacampervan · 20/12/2023 16:11

Such sad news. I can knit some squares - I think that I have blues, hopefully in the correct shades.

Whatsthatbrightlight · 20/12/2023 16:12

Such very sad news.
I have some purple in my stash and will happily contribute a square or two x

MrsFloof · 20/12/2023 16:16

Cat before her black shorthaired ones was a very fluffy ginger on top, white underneath.

GoulashSoup · 20/12/2023 16:16

Ooof that is sad news. I will have a dig in my stash of special wool for black cat, blousy blooms and sea blues. So much love to all that knew and loved mowly77.

IoWfairyonthechristmastree · 20/12/2023 16:17

Ok, just read thread properly. Don’t worry you non-stitchers, we who can will do our best on your behalf- Just donate wool and we will create!

ExpensiveDecorations · 20/12/2023 16:19

I can make a square or two Flowers

MrsFloof · 20/12/2023 16:19

I know her daughter really loves cats, they both did. When she was very close to the end and in hospital she was saying she wanted to be with her cat and daughter. She did make it home for her last few days to be with them.

MrsFloof · 20/12/2023 16:23

I think there are quite a few people that would like to help but can't knit though her funeral announcement asked for donations to Royal Marsden so some have donated there. Is the best way to donate here for anyone clueless about wool. https://www.woollyhugs.org/donate-2/

IoWfairyonthechristmastree · 20/12/2023 16:23

Please can I do an enormous red lips lipstick square?

KnottyAndPistey · 20/12/2023 16:31

@MrsFloof i can match up anyone who’d like to donate yarn and crafters. V easy. Then it’ll be a bit more direct
