Woolly Hugs. Sad news we are afraid. Making a Blanket for lovely Mowly77's family

You may have heard the dreadfully sad news that lovely Mumsnetter Mowly77 died on November 18th. Cancer is a devastating, insidious and indiscriminate disease. Life has been very cruel to them all. Her daughter is still very little, only 5 this year. Bless her heart. Mowly77 had been organising the Stage 4 Cancer thread on Mumsnet, not a place anyone wants to be, but she did so with resilience, rage, humour, alongside absolute love and support.

We are so glad we can make a Woolly Hug, we hope it may give whatever comfort it can. There will be love crafted into every stitch. We want it to be a celebration, tribute and to help her daughter keep memories.

So we are now asking for help once again. We shall need crafters and donors of funds and wool, can you help us? We’d be so grateful. Thank you so much.

Important crafting info
Squares to be six inches, using 4mm needles or hook. Please knot off VERY carefully when finishing or changing colour and sew your ends in, thank you! No blocking please, makes it much easier to join squares.

Simple or complex, made by beginner or expert, we genuinely welcome them all. It really is the love and thought that counts.

Ideas from her wonderful friends.
Initials are F and T
They LOVED cats, so all the cats please!
The family live at the seaside, so anything there please.
Her relatives are from the US, so a flag would be good.
Books/newspaper, typewriter would be good, she was a journalist.
She loved doughnuts, so this could be a fun square.
She loved music, particularly Madonna and Kate Bush.
She often wore red lipstick
Big bright flowers - she had a big coat she wore on the beach, covered in these.
Parks, countryside - she loved walking

Am literally sending out yarn on your behalf as we speak!

An enormous amount of wool is on the way, huge thanks to the donors of funds. It will all be coming via Wool warehouse and I stuck to the Drops merino. Which is totally lush.

Obvs this will not be arriving before Christmas, but it is ordered so will be on the way next week. Please lovely recipient crafters DO post on here when yours arrives. The wonderful donors of funds like to see, and we then don't have to worry that it hasn't arrived.

Evening everyone, my yarn has arrived safely.

Here's hoping in her daughter's life there's more progress against this hereditary breast cancer which also took Mowly's Mum when Mowly was 10.

@MrsFloof that is desperately sad - she must have lived with that worry her whole life 😢

Yes I think she first had breast cancer at 36 knowing her Mum had died of it early 30s then had a child by IVF and I think it came back at stage 4 a few years after that. Her DD has a 50% chance of getting it. But she did have an interesting life as well travelling and journalism and cats and MN. Things have improved in cancer treatment though and will continue to.

Big thank you to the doner who sent me this yarn. 👼I will be knitting some cat themed squares with it. So sad for Mowly she was a brave woman who never lost her spirit.

Evening all, I hope everyone is having a peaceful Christmas.

I've spent a few days quietly crocheting and I now have some squares which I will send off next week.

I've done a cat square, 2 flowery ones, a bobble heart with Mowly and her daughter's initials in and, as for my my final square - well what can I say?

In the OP it was mentioned that Mowly often wore red lipstick. I used this as a starting point and tried to create a pair of red lips in bobble stitch!!

My DH has said that the resulting square is a cross between the advertising logo for The Rocky Horror Picture Show and the red lips synonymous with the Rolling Stones!!

I deliberated whether to enclose this square but ultimately decided that I would - purely because it was made with good intentions .
I do hope they can put a smile on everyone's lips!!
