Who knew? Or is it just me?

OP posts:
kimchio · 19/12/2023 06:23

Just had a look at their website it's quite hard to navigate on a phone

ParsnipAndPoppy · 19/12/2023 06:33

I know this sounds odd but I really really dislike the font, so I don’t buy the chocolate.

There was some SM thing about this recently which I guess is where OP got the idea for the thread

Dynamoat · 19/12/2023 06:39

It might virtue signal but ultimately it gets by on the fact the packaging looks slightly like a Wonka bar and you have a little moment of thinking you're buying one. Until you get it home and it's hard and tasteless.

Togomalone · 19/12/2023 00:34

I honestly don’t get it

Jo Fairly started Green and Blacks and Maya Gold was the first chocolate to get the fair trade label in the UK. That was 30 years ago… feels like emperor’s new clothes to me. Plenty of fair trade chocolate out there to choose from without resorting to Tony’s. The packaging is cute though.

Ps. definitely think it’s suspicious how many threads are started discussing Tony’s chocolate. Seems to inspire very extreme love/hate reactions

Green & Black's sold to Cadburys who ditched their fair trade approach and changed recipes across the piece which is why Cadburys doesn't taste right anymore either.

AndAllOurYesterdays · 19/12/2023 07:13

I think it's great that a small, overtly ethical brand has gone mainstream. Despite not always getting it right they have at least got us talking about slavery and chocolate. However, I do agree the chocolate itself is disappointing.

SallyWD · 19/12/2023 07:38

I found out because of a Mumsnet post about a year ago. A women's ex-DH had given her some for her birthday. She thought he might be having a dig that she was lonely and single.

Hollyhead · 19/12/2023 07:50

There is a technique to eating the chocolate too - it’s a chocolate that does not lend itself to being eaten cold!

HamstersAreMyLife · 19/12/2023 07:56

I didnt know it was particularly ethical, I got bought some a few years ago and loved it so I buy it because of that. It did take me ages to get used to the name though and I still never call it by it's proper name. It's one of my favourites but then I am a big Yorkie fan

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 19/12/2023 08:06

why it's called "chocoloney"

I like the stuff with bits of candy cane in

Jacfrost · 19/12/2023 08:09

saraclara · 19/12/2023 00:09

A mondegreen is something misheard, not misread.

It is a type of mondegreen, because people are anticipating a rhyme.

If the brand was just called Chocolonely yes it would be being misread. But Tony is the familiar word and it's not surprising the brain interprets the following nonsense word as a rhyme. Even less surprising when you consider that the packaging is just seen rather than actively read in any larger context of text.

So no it's nothing to do with literacy.

AndThatWasNY · 19/12/2023 08:14

I absolutely love this chocolate. Dairy milk on the other hand has been wrecked.

BareBelliedSneetch · 19/12/2023 08:14

Is it Tony’s who won’t employ fat people?

colourfulchinadolls · 19/12/2023 08:15

Ugh its horrible whatever its called! Worse than that horrible montezumas chocolate. Sickly, grainy and cloying. I prefer Cadbury 😂

dressedforcomfort · 19/12/2023 08:18

John Oliver did an article on Last Week Tonight about the ethics of chocolate. (Couldn't get the YouTube link to paste on here but worth going to YouTube and watching.) Tony's Chocolonely came out much better than most of the big providers. It is hugely challenging to eradicate slavery from the chain completely, but they show much more commitment to doing so than other companies.

CornishPorsche · 19/12/2023 08:21

Yes I knew the name. It's on the packet. It's also crap chocolate, tasteless and greasy. The shape and thickness also means it's inedible as you can't break it up unless you have very very strong teeth. Which I don't.

Very expensive, not a good product.

AllyBugs · 19/12/2023 08:26

It's not coeliac friendly which is annoying when the work's canteen decides that's all they're going to stock in the spirit of being ethical

MsMaraschino · 19/12/2023 08:32

@Peasand actually, I think they found them because someone else went looking. It’s a
bit cynical to start a company that makes such a song and dance about ethical credentials, yet still used chocolate supplied by Barry Callebeaut. BC have been cited in cases of child slavery, and slammed for their deforestation and damage to the environment.

It is that cynicism that stopped me buying them, as I felt conned, and was cross at my goodwill being taken advantage of.

Metallicant · 19/12/2023 08:46

It tastes vile

SallyWD · 19/12/2023 08:59

Am I in the minority for liking it? I think it's really good. I don't find it at all greasy or sickly.

BeforetheFlood · 19/12/2023 09:05

Isn't the crazy paving style bar supposed to symbolise inequality? Not everyone gets a fair share.

CornishPorsche · 19/12/2023 09:22

BeforetheFlood · 19/12/2023 09:05

It's a virtue signalling nonsense tbh, rendering it near inedible. They'd do far better to have a refresh of the whole thing and actually check the provenance of their supply lines.

VegetablesFightingToReclaimTheAubergieneEmoji · 19/12/2023 09:32

Dh got their advent calendar.
one of the doors was empty to symbolise inequality.

I laughed. A lot

him, less so

They had to apologise about this a couple of years ago didn't they. Children were crying 😂

It's virtue signalling...they use child labour

MadeOfAllWork · 19/12/2023 09:40

I’ve never actually said the word out loud so I’ve not really paid any attention to it before.

Whenever any brand of chocolate is mentioned on here there is always a host of people chipping in to say that they hate it and it tastes greasy/waxy etc. I often wonder if any brand would meet universal MH approval.

ssd · 19/12/2023 09:50

Do you still get yorkies?
