How often did your parents go to the pub?

Wondering if it more common in years gone by for parents, especially dad's to go to the pub. I have this image from TV of dad's going to the pub for a couple almost every night.

My parents hardly went maybe once a month DH and I go about twice a week!

AnneLovesGilbert · 31/10/2023 22:44

Dad never. Mum (they’re divorced) goes to a fancy gastro pub near her but only to eat.

HardcoreLadyType · 31/10/2023 22:44

Never. I was a child in the late 60s, 70s and 80s.

AnneLovesGilbert · 31/10/2023 22:45

Mum remembers going with her dad and sitting in the car outside eating peanuts till he drove them home again. Not the U.K.

Aylestone · 31/10/2023 22:45

One or the other was in every single day. Including Xmas day. We’d have to wait until the pub closed at 2 for them to come home and start Xmas dinner

cardibach · 31/10/2023 22:45

Approximately never. Dad did do a lot of work with the RBL which sometimes involved a drink in the club.

My dad did that. I had to go with my mum or my dad to work. When my dad was gardening he’s take a break every couple of hours for a pint. I’d get left in the car

Frenchiesgirl · 31/10/2023 22:47

Dad every evening after work through the week. Sometimes he would take me (youngest). Every weekend the whole family went to the pub, Fri night, sat day (back home for a siesta) sat night and Sunday afternoon. I'm now in my thirties and tee-total.

Zelsa30 · 31/10/2023 22:47

My dad went nearly every night for a few pints when I was growing up and my mum would ring the pub and tell him to come home because the tea was ready, or it was his turn to make tea 😂

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 31/10/2023 22:47

It was peaks and troughs. I remember as a teen df going weekly on a Sunday afternoon, when we were smaller he rarely went, then as adults he didn’t go much and drank at home mainly.
We go weekly for a drink. I meet dh after work one night a week to catch up without the kids there.

Moderateorgoodoccasionallyverypoor · 31/10/2023 22:48

Lived in a small town. DF did go ‘for a few pints’ every evening, everyone did their age really, it was very social. Less on tv I suppose.
DM went out one weekend night with him. That was late 70’s early 80’s. He never went out before 8pm though, so wasn’t drinking all evening, & pubs last orders was 10pm iirc.

They eventually divorced as he liked a few drinks too much and became an alcoholic.

Feartraining · 31/10/2023 22:49

Never. They did go out to dinner dances at the weekend though, maybe once a month.

Multipleexclamationmarks · 31/10/2023 22:50

Mid to late 70's to mid when I was a small kid kid,
Dad used to go to the pub every Sunday afternoon for a bit.

Early to mid 80's, so age 10 -15ish,(dad had died by then) mum used to go out every Saturday night with her friend. Her friends kid would come round and we'd have a bag of sweets and watch a film while they were gone.
I remember late 80's I'd be 15+ home alone, always used to watch midnight caller on TV then they'd come home.

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 31/10/2023 22:50

Never. I grew up in the 80s/90s. None of my grandparents did either.

Me and DP never go. My brother and his wife are regular pub goers.

TakingTheHorseToFrance · 31/10/2023 22:53

Never. Working class Irish 80s kids all my friends dads did and OH dad was a high function alcoholic. It never featured in my life and I am so grateful for that. I look back and take such a dim view of the local pubs in our tiny rural village knew people (dads mainly) were spending their weeks wages and their kids were going hungry. Alcoholism was accepted and a curse

Bloody hell. What was the appeal? Boozing? The social aspect? Bit of both?

Sounds like The Rovers / The Queen Vic.

Although they are fictional I guess you must get places like that in real life. Locals where the same people are in every single day. I just haven't really come across it in real life.

Hillsmakeyoustrong · 31/10/2023 22:56

Dad officially went on a Wednesday with his dad, Thursday for quiz night and then with mum every Saturday night. However, he popped unofficially many a night. I'll never forget my DHs first trip to the pub with him, he knocked back his first 3 pints in 30 minutes. He never drank at home though except for a bottle of Blue Nun for the adults with a Sunday roast. Those were the days 😅

jesshomeEd · 31/10/2023 22:56

Every Friday night. Still does!

SM4713 · 31/10/2023 22:57

Never! I only recall seeing my dad drink a beer at Christmas or on the rare occasion they had a BBQ or friends around. My nan (who lived to 102!) liked a blood Mary at Christmas, but used to tell me that women weren't allowed in pubs 'in her day'.

StEtienne93 · 31/10/2023 22:58

My dad was hardly ever out of the pub. Every weekday evening from 9pm until closing. From Friday and Saturday lunchtimes until closing. Sunday from 12 noon until 2.30pm, home for Sunday dinner, have a nap and back up the pub at 9pm!
It was the 90s, my mum was never happy (hardly surprising) and he swears blind that he doesn't have a drinking problem (he most certainly does).

TheChosenTwo · 31/10/2023 22:58

Lived with my mum, she went out most weekends. No idea about my dad, possibly more often as he didn’t have dc to look after but I don’t know.

Thehumiliatedfish · 31/10/2023 22:59

My own parents never went to the pub.

Ex PIL was one of them who spent every evening ok the pub. And Ex DH is now a functioning alcoholic.

StEtienne93 · 31/10/2023 23:02

I've just added it up, and my dad must've spent at least 36 hours in the pub every week! I don't know how my mum put up with it, she should've LTB.

Aparecium · 31/10/2023 23:04

Never.

One day when I was in my early 20s DM and I were walking in central London and she needed a wee. She was both horrified and fascinated when I confidently steered her into a pub, spotted the toilets sign and steered her towards it. Horrified at my confidence in going into a pub, and fascinated by my confidence in going into a pub!

I know my dad would take foreign business visitors to pubs when they wanted to experience local colour, but he had absolutely no interest in 'warm beer' and the other delights of pubs. He'd eat a meal in a beer garden, if he had to.

RampantIvy · 31/10/2023 23:06

Never.
We didn't live near any pubs. They would have a bottle of wine with Sunday lunch and on special occasions.
