How often did your parents go to the pub?

Wondering if it more common in years gone by for parents, especially dad's to go to the pub. I have this image from TV of dad's going to the pub for a couple almost every night.

Never. I was a child of the eighties/nineties.

IhearyouClemFandango · 01/11/2023 07:16

They never did. Sometimes a drink in the sailing club after racing at the weekend, but we would all be kicking around.

judgedreadful · 01/11/2023 07:17

Everyday! That's because they ran a pub.

CornishGem1975 · 01/11/2023 07:18

Mum and dad went about 2-3 times a year, we went with them on those occasions.

Me and DH go maybe twice a week, sometimes with kids sometimes without, depends on the weather, time of year, occasion, what we're doing that day... it's very much a local for us though and we know owners, people in there so it's a social thing.

Chiaseedling · 01/11/2023 07:20

Never! I remember my dad going to one on holiday with another guest and I thought it was so funny he had a beer.
This was in the 80s, but it was just something they did not do. My mum liked a drink but not in a pub (until I was old enough and we’d go on holiday at least).

EmmyLemmyHemmy · 01/11/2023 07:21

My dad has gone every day as long as I remember. Even when I was a child he would spend a couple of hours every night in the pub at the bottom of our road without fail……

EasternStandard · 01/11/2023 07:22

Never

They did go to restaurants and lunches / dinners at people’s houses

dicedicebaby · 01/11/2023 07:22

My dad used to go to the local social club on a Sunday lunchtime to play snooker and have a couple of drinks with his friends.

Mum and dad would often go out on a Friday or Saturday night together (to the same club mostly) but the only time I recall going to pubs was in the summer when we would sometimes go as a family and sit outside.

TitInATrance · 01/11/2023 07:23

My parents were born in the 1930s. DF maybe went to the pub a couple of times a year. DM never. They probably went for pub food on their pensioner holidays but I never heard about it; as a family we always self-catered.

JiminyCricketsGF · 01/11/2023 07:28

Child of the 90s here and my dad never went to the pub.

my step dad would go almost nightly for one tetleys.

When I went to college our nearest place for lunch was the local pub. We'd get served beer and chips. and play pool for an hour. We were all aged 16-17 (like in the Inbetweeners!)

my grandparents loved the pub. one posh set would go for Sunday Roasts and my nan would go for a sherry whenever she felt like it.

I LOVE the pub on Christmas Day for a beveragini but our local is awful. So can't really go.

GOODCAT · 01/11/2023 07:30

My Dad every night and once we were old enough to be left my Mum too. This was 70s/80s. We lived in a village and the pubs were the social hub. Neither of them were alcoholics.

Turtles4543 · 01/11/2023 07:31

80s child, parents never went to the pub

JiminyCricketsGF · 01/11/2023 07:31

AND I remember drink driving being quite normal & terrifying too....

(probably just my local area as it's always been a decade behind everywhere else!)

Shayisgreat · 01/11/2023 07:31

Only for funerals and weddings I think. They would go to badminton tournaments and probably have a drink afterwards and I remember my dad going out for work parties sometimes. He definitely didn't go routinely at the weekend or in the evenings. Neither were big drinkers.

My dad was seen as a bit of a dry shite by my mam's family and didn't really join the men when they went out for a drink. I think he wasn't able to drink as much as them and had no interest in keeping up.

DeathMetalMum · 01/11/2023 07:32

Never, except for a party after a christening or something like that.

They did have friends round almost every Friday when I was growing up to play cards and have a few drinks though, so were still very social.

wiseoldtree · 01/11/2023 07:32

Mine went to a Phoenix Nights style social club rather than a pub.

Dad 2/3 times a week, mum once then is kids on a Sunday lunch.

Hated it!

DrinkingMyWaterMindingMyBiz · 01/11/2023 07:32

I remember going with them a good few times as a kid in the 90s. Dad used to go on his own with friends, mum if it was “family friendly” (reading back, I didn’t realise how 1950s my life had been!)

When dad died in the 00s, mum had a new lease of life and started going with her own friends more. Not sure if this is because dad was gone or because I was a teen and could be left alone by then. Probably a bit of both.

DeepEnd · 01/11/2023 07:33

70s/80s they’d both go to the pub most weekend nights and/or out to see bands. Sometimes lunch time mid week and weekends with me left out in the car with a bag of crisps and a bottle of coke. I preferred being left home alone where I could stay up late to watch tv under strict instructions not to answer the door or phone. DF would have a beer at home most evenings after work too.

I’ve never left DS but I have taken him to family friendly pubs or I’ll drink at home.

BoobyDazzler · 01/11/2023 07:33

Very occasionally. Dh and I occasionally go out for a pint of shandy but we’re not really pub people.

NonMiDispiace · 01/11/2023 07:34

Never when I was a child, in fact we took them out for they’re first pub lunch after we were married!
We occasionally go for a pub lunch, probably 3 or 4 times a year?

PumpkinSpiceSeason · 01/11/2023 07:35

Never- too cheap for pubs and too much work to do at home. 80s/90s US

But my dad would buy a 24 pack and drink it by himself over the weekend every weekend for years.

I like in UK now and DP and I only go to a pub if we are travelling and that's the only meal option. I like a cozy family pub but DP is (more) foreign and feels a bit weird in them.

macshoto · 01/11/2023 07:36

Approximately never. 1970's

barbarahunter · 01/11/2023 07:38

I remember in the '70s my parents started going regularly to the pub when I was about 12/13 years old. I hated their going because they always came back pissed, and always drunk drove although 'everyone did' in those days.

They then graduated to drinking at home, too. I know that his drinking habit was a major contributory factor to my father's subsequent illness and death, but o no, he knew better. It was all really unpleasant.

I used to go to a pub when I was in my teens but I wouldn't dream of going to one now, apart from for something to eat.

TorroFerney · 01/11/2023 07:38

every Lunchtime during the week and then Saturday and Sunday afternoon (dad). Oh it may have been a Friday evening as well. If we were out on a Saturday and it got to pub time he would start to get really stressed. My mum didn’t go as much but she’d drink in the house . They did sometimes go out together Saturday night. I hated it, my dad always stunk of beer and I found it really embarrassing.

MellowMelly · 01/11/2023 07:44

For my parents, very very rarely. I was born in 1979 and when they did go out and we were babysat by grandparents, it was normally because they were going to a house party. That seemed to be quite a thing back then. Occasionally I remember we would go to the British Legion but that was more drinks with family and probably once a year.

However it was more of a thing for my Grandparents. Grandfather used to go for a pint everyday. That was normal for that generation.

However, if you speak to a few of my daughters friends whose fathers are builders…they will tell you that Dad is always down the pub after work having a few 😂
