How often did your parents go to the pub?

Wondering if it more common in years gone by for parents, especially dad's to go to the pub. I have this image from TV of dad's going to the pub for a couple almost every night.

Maybe once a fortnight? I can remember being sent out to play in the play area with my cousins, a coke and a bag of Walker's crisps to share. 90s childhood. Neither of my parents were big drinkers, dad like a beer a couple times a week.

OhSmitty · 02/11/2023 07:23

Never. None of my family would nip to the pub for a few drinks. We'd go for a meal for special occasions.

MrsAvocet · 02/11/2023 09:34

Never. I was born in the mid 60s and brought up in a small, working class northern town and I recall friends talking about their parents, especially their Dads, going to the pub, but mine were teetotal. I had a strict, religious upbringing and had never been inside a pub or tasted alcohol til I went to University. The only things my parents ever went out to in the evening in my childhood were Church events. They mellowed as they aged and in their later years would go to pubs for meals, but there'd be more likelihood of them going sky diving than going out just for a drink.

Bloody hell. What was the appeal? Boozing? The social aspect? Bit of both?

Sounds like The Rovers / The Queen Vic.

Although they are fictional I guess you must get places like that in real life. Locals where the same people are in every single day. I just haven't really come across it in real life.

Really? I can thin, of 2 regulars pubs straight off the top of my head in the town ilivein. There was another one but it's since closed.

justjeansandanicetop · 02/11/2023 10:08

@Samlewis96 Presumably varies a lot by area, then.

There's never really been anything like that in the town I grew up in (where I moved back to 11 years ago). Just a few gastropubs.

When I lived in a different city for uni, there were the "student pubs" where we went, and then there were a few more traditional pubs which had the separate lounge and seemed to be more "regulars".

But the regulars were all fairly elderly and didn't seem to be younger people getting involved. I had assumed it was very much dying out.

ElaineMBenes · 02/11/2023 10:15

My dad - hardly ever.
My mum went out every Sunday ( once were were grown up)

Me and DH go to the pub regularly, in the village I live in there is a real pub culture so it's common to pop out a couple of times a week and kids are welcome. There will be people of all ages out and nobody would bat an eyelid if you went out alone as everyone knows each other.

DH is away tonight so me and DS (9) might go to the pub for tea after I collect him from afterschool club.

ElaineMBenes · 02/11/2023 10:24

Thinking of lots of stuff the local Facebook is used for anyone know a plumber, kids football club, where to get a dogwalker, all that info would have been shared in the church and the pub.

It still is in some places.
I bought my house in a pub! and sold the one I was living in at the time! lol

Sugarfree23 · 02/11/2023 12:37

@ElaineMBenes brilliant!
Thats exactly the social stuff I mean.

Yes some would get drunk but for most it was a social experience.

ElaineMBenes · 02/11/2023 13:19

@Sugarfree23 I always get comments about how often I'm in the pub from people but I always try to explain that it's not about the drinking ( I don't always drink alcohol) but it's the social side. Our community is based around the local pubs and even the events that are not based around drink, always start or get planned in a pub!

Sugarfree23 · 02/11/2023 13:33

@ElaineMBenes I can totally believe it. And as I said the other place people used to frequent for local knowledge, events and general socialising was churches.

It's an odd parallel but I can definitely see why people frequent churches and pubs less than they did. They were social hubs, made redundant to an extent by social media.

It wasn't all about the booze or God it was about having time with other people.

ElaineMBenes · 02/11/2023 13:42

@Sugarfree23 actually you're right.
We still have a relatively vibrant church community too which is welcoming to everyone.

BebbanburgIsMine · 02/11/2023 14:06

Never.

My parents weren't drinkers, my dad would have one pint and a whisky if Scotland or Aberdeen were playing in any final, rugby ot football, but that would be it.

I don't drink or go to pubs either, I'll have a pub lunch on occasion, but only ever with a soft drink.

TommyNever · 02/11/2023 14:23

Once in a blue moon they would go to a pub for a meal and have a couple of drinks with it. They never went to pubs just to drink and socialise.

Sugarfree23 · 02/11/2023 15:42

@Saltnvinegarnsauce
What made you ask the question?

It's not the first time I've seen a similar question.

VillageFete · 02/11/2023 16:24

I’m surprised by the amount of “nevers” I honestly thought that it was a very common thing years back.

I was born in ‘85, my dad was never in. It would be a surprise to me if he stayed home for the evening. Was he in the pub every night? I don’t know, not quite sure where he was all of the time, but he did like a drink and had a couple of locals and according to my mum, was there very often.

My mum, far less than my dad; but she loved a night out and probably went out 2 weekends a month whilst we stayed with my Auntie. She loved to go clubbing 🤣

I love the pub, love socialising but with having young kids don’t go that often. Maybe a couple of times per month?

I was bought up in the the 50's/60's, and my parents never once went to pubs. A glass of wine or sherry at Xmas was it.🙂

Allywill · 02/11/2023 19:09

my dad went every night. mum would go with him on saturdays. he’s 86 now and still goes 3 nights a week - he only has 2 halves though and is home by 7pm.

Ryeman · 03/11/2023 13:16

My Dad went to the pub 8 times a week when I was a kid - Mon to Sat eves plus Sat and Sunday pre-lunch. No wonder him and my mum divorced! Family outings also often included a pub stop off. I don’t think it’s so common these days - Dads are expected to be a lot more hands on at home. My dh is definitely not a pub-goer unless it’s a proper night out. Also pubs have changed - they now have to offer decent food and be family-friendly to survive, not just a pint and packet of crisps.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 03/11/2023 15:51

Never. Too skint, and weren’t really pub types anyway. Once they were better off there was always wine and gin at home though.
