How often did your parents go to the pub?

Wondering if it more common in years gone by for parents, especially dad's to go to the pub. I have this image from TV of dad's going to the pub for a couple almost every night.

Dad went to the pub with his brothers every Thursday night after first coming home with his pay packet and he took us kids every now and again - we used to get a lemonade and seabrooke crisps and all sit out on the seafront. Mam went quite rarely, maybe once every couple of months usually with all of us and other family.
Me and my husband take the kids to the local pub nearly every week just to have a meal and play cards. It's quite a big part of our lives. I don't always drink alcohol when I'm there though. Sometimes I just have tea.

Ireland here, never, ever! Well, actually my Dad and I went for a walk once after my brother's wedding and we ended up in the pub across the road, both of us avoiding my odious sister-in-law and drinking tea to drown our sorrows. Dad knew the landlady from elsewhere and we had a grand old chat until they sent out a search party looking for us. My mother doesn't drink either but well able to pour brandy or whiskey over the top of a Christmas cake.

When I was a kid we'd generally spend at least one day a weekend at the rugby club, and parents would usually go down the pub on a Friday night, maybe one other night in the week.

HiGunny · 31/10/2023 23:14

Probably a few times a month? I remember going for Sunday drives and we'd often end up in a pub. Dad would have 5 or 6 pints, my mum would have 3 or 4 shandies and then drive us all home 🙈 This was 80s Ireland, drink driving was rife.

Starbeeees · 31/10/2023 23:16

Every single night. Always. Both of them.

we would have to wait outside, or in the lounge of a family friendly pub, while they propped up at the bar.

it was awful

Never! My mum was an alcoholic and got through at least a litre of cheap, Co Op, own brand sherry every day at home, dad never went to a pub, but had one can of Guiness every evening.

I hate pubs, the atmosphere, the vile, stomach churning smell of alcohol, the pointlessness of sitting around drinking, and would not turn a hair if I was told, tonight, that I could never set foot in a bar or pub again for the rest of my life! No loss!

Winnipeggy · 31/10/2023 23:19

Never I don't think, and I don't ever part from the occasional meal. Went a lot at uni and in my 20's but I think it's slightly dying

Floralnomad · 31/10/2023 23:20

My Nan and grandad owned a pub so when I was little my mum helped out and my dad did the books / cleaned the pumps but they never actually went to a pub to drink and neither does my husband or myself .

Got2getout · 31/10/2023 23:20

Dad went every night after work, not all night, maybe a hour or so. Friday nights were particularly important because the local cash-in-hand labourers were paid in the pub on a Friday night.

That was the 90s. When I was in my late / teens early twenties I had quite a few bar jobs and had plenty of regulars who were similar, but I could see it beginning to die out. I don’t think many pubs have regulars now in the same way that they used to.

Now my dad goes once a week. DP and I don’t go at all.

I always thought it was pretty normal for the time.

Aquamarine1029 · 31/10/2023 23:23

Never.

ithinkthatmaybeimdreaming · 31/10/2023 23:26

Never. I was a child in the 60s/70s.

2chocolateoranges · 31/10/2023 23:31

Never, my mum was a single parent and never went to the pub. She did go to a friends house with a small group of women from me being about 10 (my sibling would have been 15/16)once a month for coffee and cake but that was as good as it got for her.

theduchessofspork · 31/10/2023 23:33

Never unless it was for an event. They went to restaurants and dinners and parties and all that.

RaininSummer · 31/10/2023 23:34

Grew up 60s and 70s and pub was barely a thing in our household. Dad and uncle would walk down for a drink on Christmas morning and about once in the summer we would go to a pub garden. I remember it well as there was a poor bear in a cage. Other than pubs were for on holiday.

theduchessofspork · 31/10/2023 23:35

… this was the 70s/80s/90s.. saying that we did go to a couple of pubs that did good food for Sunday lunch.

They had a bear in the pub garden?!

Canisaysomething · 31/10/2023 23:39

My dad goes twice a week now but when he was actually parenting, he hardly ever went.

Saltnvinegarnsauce · 31/10/2023 23:40

I should add that my mum rarely went. Dad would go once a week but would always end up drunk beyond recognition. This was 80s/90s

Grandad, every night after work. And the weekend.
Dad, after work some days. Mostly on a Friday.
Granny, never. Mum, not really.
Mum & Dad never go now, only have a drink on holidays.

SallyWD · 31/10/2023 23:41

Never. My parents have no interest in drinking.

RaininSummer · 31/10/2023 23:47

Yes indeed. The pub was called the Bear and a bear was there in a barred cage.

NeverNotDreaming · 31/10/2023 23:50

My dad was an alcoholic who got drunk at home. In recovery by the time I was around 9. He did go to the pub occasionally with family then, but he never drank alcohol again.
my mum, almost never but she was a single parent full time from when I was around 3. Stepfather wasn’t a drinker either.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 01/11/2023 00:05

Never. My mum wouldn't have been seen dead in a pub and my dad was teetotal. This was the 60s and 70s.

AlltheFs · 01/11/2023 00:11

Not often.
We only went as a family really - for an occasion like a birthday meal or meet up with friends/family.
Maybe 6 times a year? More on holidays.

I don’t remember my dad going on his own. I’m sure he did, but I’m not aware of it so can’t have been often but presumably he did socialise somewhere, sometimes. He wasn’t in to sports though and it goes hand in hand with that.

Snoeberry · 01/11/2023 00:12

Never.! I was a child of the 70s and 80s.

However my dad does go about once a week now .
