Yes sorry you're right @RafaistheKingofClay that was based on a quick Google when they did do better than sky news for a certain period. Considering how new they are (and you could say their position on the channel selector) they are doing very well which is very heartening for working class people like me who are fed up with the same old smug patronising private school educated journalists on the mainstream channels who are clueless about the real world.

GB News should be shut down and Lawrence Fox arrested

If GB News shuts down it will be because it is a shambolic operation with really high levels of staff turnover. Some who left with substantial payouts in return for signing NDAs.Hmm

Laurence Fox was educated at Harrow.

Nobody should be arrested for an opinion, no matter how abhorrent.

You want hate speech to stop being a crime?

...working class people like me who are fed up with the same old smug patronising private school educated...

Like JRM /Camilla Tomeney /Farage/ Fox etc?

Like you @Coveescapee, I am working class and in my 50s. When you trusted the BBC back in the 80s, I didn't. I knew they were misrepresenting and downright lying since I was a child.

In my teens I learnt to ask these questions of the news:
Why are you telling me this news this way?
What are you not telling me?
Who is behind these decisions?

So you don't think hate speech should be a crime?

Coveescapee · 28/09/2023 19:15

No hate speech shouldn't be a crime. The police waste far too much time policing speech and not enough tackling actual crime. It is far too subjective. Inciting violence was already a crime and should remain so. Laurence Fox is just a sexist twat and should be sacked but not visited by the police.

newnamethanks · 28/09/2023 19:16

Lawrence Fox, Harrow. Nigel Farage, Dulwich College. Moggy, Eton. Working class heroes one and all. Vive la revolution, to the barricades. Public schoolboys one and all.

Coveescapee · 28/09/2023 19:23

Huh? I never said all gb news presenters are working class how ridiculous. But I'm sure more of them are than the BBC. Sure i read once that the most privately educated journalists are at the Guardian which is the BBC in print form. They absolutely disdain the working classes.

Apparently he was so awful Harrow refused to give him a reference for university. God knows why since they aren't that picky

I read your post. I know you didn't say all gb presenters are working class. No one said you did.Confused

longwayoff · 28/09/2023 19:46

I suggest you have a look at the staff of The Telegraph and do some counting there if you're moving on to newspapers for some unfathomable reason.

hihelenhi · 28/09/2023 19:57

I watch the BBC thanks. I don't watch GB news in general (Andrew Doyle aside) and given that I have never voted for a right wing party in my life and would pretty solidly fall on the economically left, Remainer, liberal, gay rights pro women's rights side of the fence, am tired of the constant factually illiterate assumptions. Some of the "goodies v baddies" ("oh, but I won't deign to try to understand any arguments or hear out any of those I call The Bad People make in case my purity gets sullied) responses on this thread are demonstrating EXACTLY what the bloody issue is. It CAUSES the likes of GB News and Laurence Fox. It entrenches them, it's not going to change the minds of their followers. I'd seriously like the adults back in the room at some point.

Women are not responsible for Laurence Fox.

Women are not responsible for GB News.
Women are not responsible for men.

So why on earth did you feel insulted when I said I can’t stomach far right views? I’m genuinely confused.

hihelenhi · 28/09/2023 20:02

Eh?

Yes, I'm aware of that, thank you. I am a feminist. Old school. Reality based. What do you imagine I am saying?

"Confused?" Why? That life isn't black and white and it's not simply about "goodies" who all think the same things and "baddies" who all think the opposite? People who aren't authoritarians and puritans usually understand this quite easily in democracies. Your purity is not going to be sullied by merely hearing different arguments.

People will disagree with you. People will disagree with me. You might even find that you strengthen your own arguments by listening to them occasionally and trying to understand how they arrived at the conclusions they did. Even if you believe they are wrong.

C4 news reported Mr Fox has apologised on Twitter. Wonder wholly be foolish enough to employ him next? Telegraph? Spectator? NewsRUs?

I’m 70, any purity I might have ever had deserted me decades ago. Why would I listen to arguments that I decided against a lifetime ago? Life’s too short.

TooBigForMyBoots · 28/09/2023 22:37

I wonder how much that cost GBN?🤭🤭🤭

It’s not so much as an apology as a very long whining video in which he says he shouldn’t have done it almost immediately followed by complaining he’s been made a scapegoat and it’s not fair. And then attacking Wootton and GB news for throwing him under the bus.

RafaistheKingofClay · 28/09/2023 23:40

Hadn’t watched all the way to the end. ‘I stand by my comments any self respecting man should run a mile from Ava.’

Yeah, that’ll do it Laurence.
