They are significantly Finn-like or Chuds. The Finns seem a great deal nicer people - the Russians should have stayed Finnish.

I know a bit about the early founding of 'England' and the invasions and interesting early histories. Very few races are pure, no matter how much the extreme nationalists want to claim it. Possibly the Inuit? trying to think of exceptions .. but not got the time to look into it.

Finns are actually quite "pure", not that that's a good thing, just means we're more inbred!

The indigenous inhabitants of Australia were cut off from other nationalities/races for a long time. Might they count?

https://www.understandingwar.org/backgrounder/russian-offensive-campaign-assessment-october-24-2023

Key Takeaways:

  • Ukrainian forces continued counteroffensive operations in eastern and southern Ukraine on October 24 and advanced south of Bakhmut and in western Zaporizhia Oblast.
  • Russia appears to be increasingly supplementing the use of Shahed-131/136 drones with cheaper and lighter domestically produced drone variants during strikes on Ukrainian infrastructure.
  • Russian authorities are intensifying mobilization efforts targeting Central Asian migrant communities in Russia.
  • Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky highlighted diminishing Russian control over the Black Sea and Ukraine’s temporary grain corridors during a speech at the Crimean Platform summit on October 24.
  • Russian forces conducted offensive operations near Avdiivka on October 24 and made confirmed advances northeast of Avdiivka.
  • Russian sources claimed that Ukrainian forces maintain some positions in Krynky (30km east of Kherson City and 2km from the Dnipro River) and continued limited attacks on the east (left) bank of the Dnipro River.
  • The Russian Ministry of Defense (MoD)-affiliated "Redut" private military company (PMC) is reportedly trying to recruit women into combat roles.
  • Russian occupation authorities continue to establish programs to forcibly deport Ukrainian children to Russia.

A joint aid package for Ukraine and Israel is facing significant challenges in the US Senate, with a high likelihood that Republicans may not approve it, according to Politico.

Oh no. @MissConductUS any insight on this?

I can't find that article on Politico. Do you have a link?

The only thing I could find that was related was this:

https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/senate-republicans-seek-concessions-bidens-106-billion-request/story?id=104259837

The Republicans in the Senate, who are not in the majority, are seeking some concessions on border control policies, but there's no talk of them trying to kill the bill. This is perfectly normal legislative sausage making.

Senate Republicans seek concessions on Biden's $106 billion request for aid to Israel, Ukraine

Senate Republicans are seeking concessions on President Joe Biden's $106 billion request for aid to Israel and Ukraine.

@MissConductUS Im afraid UNITED24 Media and Live: Ukraine only give a few links, so no. I can ask someone from Politico who astonishingly decided to follow me on Bluesky.

@AskingQuestionsAllTheTime good point! I wonder if Native Americans were fairly unadulterated too?

MissConductUS · 25/10/2023 17:55

Ducks, I wouldn't bother. There really was nothing on Politico about it with that slant on it. I think an editor at the Ukrainian news service simply misunderstood what they were reading.

The legislation was carefully crafted to have broad appeal, or at least to make open opposition very costly politically.

Igotjelly · 25/10/2023 18:09

I have found a couple of times that I struggle to track down the source of some of these.

DancesWithDucks · 25/10/2023 18:18

yes, me too tho with the amount of time doing the roundup takes here, on Twitter and Bluesky, I often don't follow things up. Plus honestly, a week away made me realise how heavily the horror of it all weighs. It's a thousand times worse for Ukrainians of course.

Okay @MissConductUS

This kind of thing does remind one that while Ukraine on the whole tends to try to portray a situation honestly, when it portrays anything at all (there are large amounts of conflict data it does not report on) .... it doesn't always get everything right. Some of it is partially a language issue I think; not even direct word-for-word translations but cultural differences surfacing, such as attributing motivations for an action that would make sense to a Ukrainian but might not be a W European approach.

DancesWithDucks · 25/10/2023 18:21

Looking at the various hints, it does look like Russia is making more gains than one would like. There are so many hundreds of thousands of Ru soldiers; there was an (unconfirmed) report that Ru had taken over the Northern wasteheaps of Avdiiivka, which gives them an advantage, and more children have been evacuated from areas that had not previously been considered dangerous enough to remove them.

BringBackCoffeeCreams · 25/10/2023 19:25

I read that headline too quick and without my glasses on. For a moment there I thought they'd elected Boris Johnson.

MissConductUS · 25/10/2023 19:28

I think we might be better off with BoJo, but not much chance of him getting elected. However, he was born in New York.

Surplus2requirements · 25/10/2023 19:35

Can't fault him on Ukraine but much of the UK electorate would be willing to sweeten the deal to get him over to you 😂

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 25/10/2023 19:47

If Matt Gaetz approves of Mike Johnson, I conclude that Johnson is probably a thoroughly bad thing.

I think Gaetz was threatened with expulsion from the caucus if he kept mucking things up.

PerkingFaintly · 25/10/2023 20:12

Nothing astonishing about deciding to follow you on BlueSky, Ducks. People recognise a quality information source when they see it!

Igotjelly · 25/10/2023 22:11

For what it’s worth John Sweeney (on Twitter) suggests that Johnson is bad news for Ukraine having voted against Ukraine in 6 of 7 votes and thinks providing aid to Ukraine is a ‘terrible mistake’

The capture of the waste heaps doesn't provide a tactical advantage. They're made up of loose rocks and dirt overburden that was removed during coal mining. They're not that high and won't support heavy equipment like artillery pieces.

MMBaranova · 25/10/2023 23:47

... and at the back of that pamphlet, there's the fold out map. It shows Ukraine as the nationalists saw it back in 1919. Crimea and Kuban included.

L1ttledrummergirl · 26/10/2023 10:26

@MMBaranova these remind of the- I called them- little green books that were found in a cardboard box at the back of my form room.
It was a history classroom in an old secondary modern. The books had been printed in the 1950s and earlier and I think that by the 80s I was the only person delving through that box.

It was utterly fascinating and a real insight into the world as it was. Fifty pages of a subject broken down into interesting facts from around the world. Pamphlets is probably the more accurate description but to me they will always be the little green books. Thank you.

DancesWithDucks · 26/10/2023 11:14

yet more posturing isn't it? It's possible it actually happened, possibly, possibly, but it rings loud and clear of "we gotta remind 'em We Have Nukes!"

Im sure it scares Elon though.

Igotjelly · 26/10/2023 11:24

It's maybe just me but I'm finding the lack of anything on Ukraine in the headlines deeply disturbing.
