Why is it so cold?

Anyone wondering this? The weather forecast keeps saying 20/21 degrees, but I’m freezing! It’s windy and cold. I’m in bed now with my electric blanket on, a duvet, fleece blanket and hot water bottle.

I think I’ve felt warmer when it’s been 11 degrees. It’s so windy. I feel like the weather forecast is gaslighting us!

I don’t like this fake summer. When is it actually going to get warm??

You can disagree as much as you like, the cold (sorry) hard scientific data proves you wrong:

https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/research/climate/maps-and-data/uk-climate-averages/gcpv7fnqu

I have chosen a weather station in London but you can search for any you would like. Over the last 30 years, June average max is 20 and average min is 11.

16 is perfectly normal.

@Lockheart

dont care about the data 🤷‍♀️
this weather is rubbish
hopefully it’ll get better soon

User1328745 · 03/06/2023 10:02

Outside thermometer say just over 15, we are going to a NT place today for a walk, I'm hoping my cardigan will be warm enough, factor 50 on face and neck.

Then the UK is not the country for you. Perhaps a relocation is in order.

Gymmum82 · 03/06/2023 10:06

@LuckySantangelo35 it is for the U.K. Anything above 20 and not raining and I’m happy

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 03/06/2023 10:07

ItsHardknocklife · 03/06/2023 09:56

its roasting here I've had to sleep with the fan on!

Same here 😂 windows open and fan on every night for weeks now.

The NW doesn't normally get the best of the weather so it's quite nice to see the tables turned for a change Grin

@Lockheart

well I’ve got to factor in other considerations but yeah I must admit it’s tempting!

that said even for the uk it has been unseasonably cold - which is…Erm you know…why a whole thread has been started! So clearly not just me thinking it! 😀

MrsSkylerWhite · 03/06/2023 10:11

Glorious here on NW coast for 8 of the past 10 days and more expected 19-24 each day. Same in Somerset where my parents are and in Cornwall where MIL lives.

Rabbitcar · 03/06/2023 10:13

@Lockheart I’m specifically not talking about the data. I know the forecast says it’s 20 but this year for whatever reason it doesn’t feel like 20. That is what is puzzling and annoying me! I’m cold and I don’t like it!

Cold? It's been hot here in Cumbria for weeks now, bit fed up with it!

champagneplanet · 03/06/2023 10:17

We're in the North West and it's been like Summer here for at least 10 days now, 20 degrees on average. Gets cool quickly when the sun goes in though.

I presumed everywhere was like this as we hardly ever get the best of the weather, however BIL has just been to the East coast for a week and said it wasn't great there.

Flora56 · 03/06/2023 10:18

I’m in the North- it’s been lovely here for a few weeks. The odd cloudy day, but generally warm, dry and lots of sunshine. We’re possibly acclimatised to lower temps though, making it feel warmer.

Leftbutcameback · 03/06/2023 10:20

The Met Office app has a “feels like” option which is good when the wind is cold (both summer and winter). I’m abroad at the moment and it’s roasting, but mainly because there is no cloud and the sun is very strong. So the temp is 24 but it feels much hotter. Everyone at home keeps saying how cold it is!

Why is it so cold?
itsgettingweird · 03/06/2023 10:21

It's been cold at night once the sun goes in here.

Mainly because it's been so sunny and there's no cloud cover.

It's currently 14° warm enough for shorts and jumper.

It'll hit 20° later (south coast) but it's about 5-8° overnight. And my house doesn't get the sun in most of it so I'm actually cooler indoors than out Grin

Thetowelsareallwrong · 03/06/2023 10:22

Lockheart · 03/06/2023 09:44

And 16 degrees isn't "freezing / baltic" yet people are still rabbiting on like we're in the middle of some desolate icy wasteland.

Just because you don't think it's cold for the time of year, pretty much 99% of posters are saying they are! We're stuck under the jet stream and NE wind coming down from the Arctic, it absolutely IS far colder than normal. They were showing charts on BBC the other day saying it was the first June in donkeys years that the temps hadn't gone above 25 I think it was in England. Scotland is definitely having the sun but then there are moor fires because it's do dry and hot up there in places.

That'll be climate change for you then....

MyPenIsHuge · 03/06/2023 10:34

I guess when folk have their heating at 20C they're just acclimatised to warmer temps?

I'm bloody freezing myself but I don't expect to be wearing a tiny summer dress in the U.K. more than a couple of days a year. I'm in Uggs and a hoody.

@MyPenIsHuge

yeah having to wear Ugg’s and a hoodie in June is ridiculous!

UGGs!!

see! Not just me saying it!

Yetisrus · 03/06/2023 10:38

I suppose it all depends on what you call warm or hot. To me 25c is pleasant, 30c is warm, 20c is still jeans and cardigan weather.

I grew up in the middle-east though so I've known temperatures higher than 35c.

RampantIvy · 03/06/2023 10:46

Shorts!
Are you an eskimo? 😃

Blueypartymummy · 03/06/2023 10:48

It hasn't rained for ages in this part of the southwest. The water butt ran dry a week ago and a we have a hosepipe ban keeping the garden alive in the scorching sun with buckets of water is getting annoying.

We've sleeping with a fan on at night, we really don't like heat (sensory issues).

It feels extreme that the weather is 'stuck' in dry sunny weather in one part of UK and others here are complaining of cold.

Don't weather systems usually move around more than this?

CalmDownBoris72 · 03/06/2023 10:50

Came to S Wales from London for the weekend, London had not been summery this week but S Wales is absolutely glorious despite the fact the forecast says the temperatures are the same.

CalmDownBoris72 · 03/06/2023 10:51

So nice that I might have to go and buy some shorts as everything I brought is too warm for this weather.

ErrolTheDragon · 03/06/2023 20:24

It's only June 3rd!

I remember one year in the 70s when we had a bit of snow on early June, in Essex.
