Why is it so cold?

Anyone wondering this? The weather forecast keeps saying 20/21 degrees, but I’m freezing! It’s windy and cold. I’m in bed now with my electric blanket on, a duvet, fleece blanket and hot water bottle.

I think I’ve felt warmer when it’s been 11 degrees. It’s so windy. I feel like the weather forecast is gaslighting us!

I don’t like this fake summer. When is it actually going to get warm??

It was warm here (Nottingham) all day Friday. I wore a nightie and only had a fleece blanket on at night, with the window open all night Grin

I’m very close to you, near ilkeston, and I had to shut the windows at about 5pm yesterday because the downstairs was too cold - I had my normal duvet on overnight and was not too hot, windows remained closed. Confused

I am surprised at the people on here turning on electric blankets tbh. Just a blanket is all that’s needed this weather, you ‘nesh gets’ - as we say round here.

Orcubed · 03/06/2023 09:06

It’s weird here too. We live on the coast and the sun is scorching when it’s out but any cloud at all and it’s freezing. Then there’s the freezing wind which feels completely icy and overrides the sun. Yesterday I tried sitting out for a bit, one minute I was hot, the next shivering and covered in goose pimples

DaisyStream · 03/06/2023 09:07

I'm in South east London and so sick of the cloud and wind. When is the jetstream going to change??

It really doesn't feel like June, and so depressing to think in 3 months autumn will be on the horizon.

I think I've felt colder as I get older

ilovebagpuss · 03/06/2023 09:30

We are lucky in the west mids it has been glorious for 3 weeks or so BUT still with that chill wind. Our garden is sheltered so it's lovely but then cold once the sun goes down.
It must be very annoying for you to see that forcast everyday they need to draw a line down the UK. We had one day where cloud didn't lift and it was grim.

PuppyMonkey · 02/06/2023 23:14

TBH I quite like it, it was sunny and pleasant all day and now is cold and lovely for snuggling under the duvet - hate it when it’s too hot.

@PuppyMonkey

urgh no, we’ve been cold and “snuggling” for months - so over it. Want it to be hot.

LuckySantangelo35 · 03/06/2023 09:38

Fingers crossed for a HEAT WAVE 🤞🤞🤞

IClaudine · 03/06/2023 09:38

It is beautiful here in South Wales, sunny and warm, has been for quite a while. There is a fresh breeze, but it is not cold in the daytime.

Oh, and then there will be moaning that it is too hot!🔥

ICalledYouLastNightFromGlasgow · 03/06/2023 09:40

It's not often we get to be smug about the weather in Glasgow so I'm enjoying this! It's bloody lovely here!

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 03/06/2023 09:41

This is what it's like near us - temps around 20/22 degrees. I'm currently sat in the garden in shorts and a vest top and it's about 18 already!

Why is it so cold?

This is such a British thread 😃

Years ago i made friends with an American lady who'd just arrived in the UK to live for a year. She said
''Back home we take the piss out of brits always talking about the weather - but now i understand why you do it and i'm doing it too! You never know what the hell weather you're going to wake up to over here and it'll all be different again by lunchtime!''
😂

Exactly!

Scorching in NW. Been outside in shorts all week. Was 24 degrees yesterday. Friend in Cambridge said it’s cold. Head north for the weather

@Gymmum82

24 degrees is NOT “scorching”

I love heat so hoping a heat wave is on its way

And 16 degrees isn't "freezing / baltic" yet people are still rabbiting on like we're in the middle of some desolate icy wasteland.

@Lockheart

it is for summer. It’s piss poor.

A) Doesn't matter what season it is. 16 degrees is never freezing or baltic. 2 degrees and you'd have a point.

B) The UK has a temperate climate. 16 is within the normal early summer range. We have had excessive hot spells in recent years which have distorted expectations.

mydogisthebest · 03/06/2023 09:51

East Midlands here and freezing. We are still having our heating on every day.

The forecasts keep saying it is 18 degrees but no way it is. One day our own thermometer said it was 14 degrees.

Really really sick of feeling cold and wearing winter clothes. Been wearing them since last October

Spudlet · 03/06/2023 09:53

Certainly feels chilly for the time of year here in Norfolk. The wind still has a distinct chill to it and I’m still getting the odd Raynauds moment
in my fingers! I’ve been using my electric blanket - usually that’s been packed away by now 😒 And it’s definitely still jeans weather here - my shorts are still shoved away wherever they went in the autumn and are likely to stay there for the time being (so I guess at least that saves me tipping every drawer out to try and find them? Yay?)

Rabbitcar · 03/06/2023 09:55

Obviously how it feels will depend on how cold or hot people naturally feel via their internal thermometer/thermostat.

But I think the cold wind in many areas is unusual and the fact you need a coat even though the forecast says 20 degrees is just odd.

Re what PP said about southern Europe, agree - it’s cloudy where DD currently is in the Greek islands.

i disagree. I still think it’s piss poor even for early summer in the uk

fingers crossed for a heat wave 😊

You can disagree as much as you like, the cold (sorry) hard scientific data proves you wrong:

I have chosen a weather station in London but you can search for any you would like. Over the last 30 years, June average max is 20 and average min is 11.

16 is perfectly normal.

I wasn't cold last night - app said 12 degrees but I had my back doors wide open. I am chilly now though and it says it's 15. But agree it's been a cold Spring.
My sisters lives in Boston (US) and it was 30 yesterday but predicted to be only 14 today and 12 tomorrow!
