Princess Kate..... frumpy clothes?

CriticalAlert · 28/05/2023 18:10

I was looking at some pictures of Kate before she got married. She looked stunning, had style, was really chic and sexy.
Now she looks quite frumpy. The pink dress she wore at the Chelsea Flower show looked better on her mum, because it's a dress for a middle aged woman! WHY is Kate forced into dowdiness? She looks great in trousers and well cut jackets. She's a beautiful woman, are 'they' concerned she might look a bit too good and not be taken seriously? It's like queen Elizabeth. She was beautiful but her clothes were dreadful. Obviously this is my opinion but I'd like to know what others think.

It does matter if you dress as your 'peers'. That's boring. I don't want to wear stretch leggings and Adidas all the time. Sometimes it's nice to feel beautiful and stand out.

I'm not quite sure why you interpreted my comment that no one I know dresses that way means everyone I know dresses the same or the only alternative to a high necked midi is leggings 😆

You said something about 'I don't know anyone who dresses this way' and I don't know why that should matter to anyone. That's what I said. People should wear what appeals to them, not what other people are wearing. Why would anyone dress down, to what end? I just don't see the relevance but ok.

But this one, imo is just awful. The colour, the neck bow, the sheer bits and the length are all just horribly unflattering.

Yes, exactly what I mean. It's horrible, even on someone in their 80s! I think she's dressing as she's being told - modest, frumpy, Windsor look. They don't want another Diana running around looking chic I Chanel, Prada etc.

I admire the fact that she isn't trying to be a fashion icon like Diana. It doesn't just happen. It involves sourcing fashionable and rare clothes and accessories and (these days) setting up websites to encourage others to copy your look. She wears clothes which do not appeal to other women of her age so she is sending the message that there won't be a Kate's Mirror appearing online soon.

She's one of the most scrutinised women in the world, I don't blame her for dressing conservatively. I also understand that she doesn't want her pictures to date.

When Diana was married she didn’t wear Chanel, I don’t remember her ever wearing Prada. She did wear Versace. She also wore some 80s horrors in her time and her wedding dress was mmm.

The POW generally looks lovely. She looks appropriate. As others say it’s a uniform.

WheelsUp · 29/05/2023 11:51

Diana famously didn't wear Chanel because of the C C logo.

@BriarHare , do you know what stout means? If Sophie is somewhat stout how skinny are you. She looks in pretty good shape for a mum who's nearly 60.

BriarHare · Yesterday 22:07
Sophie is somewhat stout and could easily be frumpy. But she manages to look relatively stylish.

I'd say middle-aged is 45-65 or thereabouts.

Elior · 29/05/2023 12:13

Kate and Princess Anne are the only slim royals.
Meghan, Sophie, Eugenie and Bea have always up and down with their weight.

This sort of post makes me so sad.

I didn’t say she doesn’t look good. I said she’s somewhat stout. By which I mean she’s solid looking, especially around her middle. A typical late 50s look for many women - it’s just a fact. I also said she manages to look stylish despite this.

KirstenBlest · 29/05/2023 14:47

@BriarHare , she is definitely not stout.

It's a uniform though, basically. The kids I teach are always envious that I get to wear my 'own' clothes, but my work clothes aren't my normal clothes. Some of my stuff is stylish, but some is a bit on the frumpy side, as is the case when you're constrained by budget and can't wear what you'd actually like to wear.

This is what I was going to say. Its a uniform, work clothes, how ever you want to phrase it. She's working and she wears clothes that are right for the future queen or whatever it is she is supposed to be.

Freeballing · 29/05/2023 14:52

I think part of the whole uniform as well is because whatever she attends is supposed to be about the event. It isn't supposed to be about her. Rocking up in a look at me dress or whatever just wouldn't really be appropriate when the focus is supposed to be on the event not her.

Anyway. Who cares? She’s someone I consider dresses well despite not being super lithe and gamine like Kate.

KirstenBlest · 29/05/2023 15:34

@BriarHare , I care. The thread about PoW looking frumpy is bad enough then posters start saying other royals are fat/stout.

She looks like a woman of normal BMI. She has a figure, as do her nieces.
I doubt that any of them have been fat.

Stop the body shaming.

She is a boring dresser, but she always has been and I can’t see her getting away with being stylish or cutting edge.

Meghan is fashionable and I enjoyed seeing her style choices when she was a working royal.

It’s Kate’s ‘job’ to look staid and appropriate and she does it very well. If you look at photos of her pre-royal life she dressed in a sloane uniform which was dull, dull, dull. She’s never going to be a style maven.

Funny, I always thought Megan looked frumpy. And nothing seemed to fit very well.

CriticalAlert · 29/05/2023 15:44

Yes I can see everyone's point of view. Kate is definitely toning down the glam look. It's just that I'd like to see her look super stunning all the time. Diana did and I miss that I suppose. By the way Diana did wear quite a lot of Chanel, her dad's funeral for example. A gorgeous black suit and hat.

OP posts:
Takoneko · 29/05/2023 15:50

She looks fine to me. As others have said, it’s her workwear. Diana didn’t really start wearing her statement pieces until after her separation. Part of the protocol of being Princess of Wales involves not wearing anything too edgy or daring.

Also, she’s already about 5 years older than Diana was when she died. She is going to look older than Diana from now on, because she is older.

Takoneko · 29/05/2023 15:58

Diana was 31 at her father’s funeral. The reason Kate seems a decade older is because she is a decade older. She’s 41.
Diana was a woman in her 20s for the years that she was married to Charles (before they separated and she got more freedom in what she wore in 1992), Kate became princess of wales as a woman in her 40s. It seems silly to compare too much.

WeAreBorg · 29/05/2023 17:29

It’s a nice dress from ME&EM, I’d buy that. I like that she’s rewearing outfits. Her suits look great. She doesn’t have ‘weak breasts’

Tottering around looking ‘glam’ all the time is not very current. She might look frumpy to some people, however those people are around 8 years out of date

Elior · 29/05/2023 17:38

‘weak breasts’ 🤔What a ridiculous observation to make!

Butitsnotfunnyisititsserious · 29/05/2023 17:41

That is an awful dress on her
colour drains her and the style draw attention to the weakest part of her body- her breasts

So what's the problem with her breasts?

Elior · 29/05/2023 17:41

I think people are too used to seeing celebrities with bolted on melons

BriarHare · 29/05/2023 17:43

😂 at ‘weak breasts’. Such a nonsensical statement my phone changed it to ‘weak breaststroke’.
