Princess Kate..... frumpy clothes?

I was looking at some pictures of Kate before she got married. She looked stunning, had style, was really chic and sexy.
Now she looks quite frumpy. The pink dress she wore at the Chelsea Flower show looked better on her mum, because it's a dress for a middle aged woman! WHY is Kate forced into dowdiness? She looks great in trousers and well cut jackets. She's a beautiful woman, are 'they' concerned she might look a bit too good and not be taken seriously? It's like queen Elizabeth. She was beautiful but her clothes were dreadful. Obviously this is my opinion but I'd like to know what others think.

I think she usually looks wonderful and classy.
I am the same age as her and would happily wear most of her clothes!
I don't wear anything like what I wore in my 20s!
I accept I'm middle-aged!

I loved her in this red trouser suit, she wore a similar one (or maybe the same one) at the coronation concert, I think she looks modern and stylish in this sort of look.

This one I mean

That is an awful dress on her
colour drains her and the style draw attention to the weakest part of her body- her breasts

bamboonights · 29/05/2023 07:28

I've always thought the royal family were 'trump frumps'. Meghan had the most style, much as I don't care for her.

Evanna13 · 29/05/2023 07:36

I am the same age as Kate. She is very slim and pretty so always looks good whatever she wears.
10/15 years ago I loved her style. I saw her as an inspiration and tried to recreate some of her looks. That has gone now. She looks fine but I never see her in anything I love or would wear myself. I guess it helps to differentiate her from commoners like me.

I don't think she's into fashion but it's a bit sad she has to dress so conservatively otherwise the DM readers will get upset!

She's around my age & I don't know any of my peers who dress like that.

Oh dear. I'm in my 20s and love her style. I actually take i aspiration from Meghan. I love the. Elegant dresses and hats.

It does matter if you dress as your 'peers'. That's boring. I don't want to wear stretch leggings and Adidas all the time. Sometimes it's nice to feel beautiful and stand out.

That particular dress is not appealing. Way too bright, the bow, not sure what's up with the neckline and ruffles. Not sure what makes her breasts 'weak' though.

FancyFanny · 29/05/2023 07:49

I don't think she looks the least bit frumpy. Conservative, yes, but she's always elegant; her clothes fit well, are appropriate for the occasion and well co-ordinated. That's the opposite of frumpy. It's also her style- why should she change that? Being high fashion isn't a requirement of her role so if it's not her style then why does she need to look to others and copy them?

LuciferRising · 29/05/2023 07:55

What's wrong with being middle aged?

GP75 · 29/05/2023 07:56

She looked fine not frumpy at all but tbh she IS a middle aged woman!

Doingmybest12 · 29/05/2023 07:58

I often think the shoes look so dated, very high stilettos . Beloved of female tv presenters too.

Doingmybest12 · 29/05/2023 07:59

Though realise she wore wedges to CFS

TheReverendBeeb · 29/05/2023 07:59

Good grief the judgement on here is something to behold - weakest part of her body, frumpy etc etc.

Maybe she likes the clothes she wears, and that's fine. She's not a runway model, she's the Princess of Wales.

Let's be honest, she'd get judged whatever she was wearing.

It's quite depressing to see this in the 21st Century.

MrsToothyBitch · 29/05/2023 08:08

I have always liked her style bar a couple of bum notes but I have liked less of her outfits since the pandemic- the droopy pussy bows, miles of extra fabric on everything, wide leg trousers and dropped hems aren't my thing at all and I do think they're a bit ageing and dull. She looks better in tailored trouser suits though and but I can rarely tell the high end from the cheap as they're not my thing- I don't wear trousers & don't own any.

I think this is partly fashion and partly not wearing as many "mini" items now she's older, which is fair enough but I still think there's a compromise to be reached somewhere between still wearing decently fitted items and not looking like she's wearing a wilted lily.

MrsToothyBitch · 29/05/2023 08:17

I think she's usually dressed appropriately though and if you follow the royal fashions, she's not that out of step with what some of the euro royals wear; she's just maybe more conservative and less of a risk taker.

I've also read she's not actually that intersted in clothes - her off duty looks are always good but simple. I quite liked a lot of Meghan's fashion too though- slightly more openly sexy (can get away with that when you're not the future of the brand), but I think if you put some of her items on Kate, they'd hit differently.

I follow a Kate account on insta and the clothes and outfits are interesting. I personally take more inspo from her earlier looks!

unbelievable
did you really just write this??

Elphame · 29/05/2023 08:23

The dress Kate wore to the CFS was apparently the same style as her mother has worn (don’t care enough to fact check that myself) but it looks like one a much older woman would wear.

I find many of her clothes are dull and frumpy no matter how much the press fawns over her. That blue chiffon polka dot one pictured above looks dreadful.

faffadoodledo · 29/05/2023 08:28

She's 40. She looks younger because her face has been well looked after and tweaked. But she's 40. And dresses like a wealthy, stylish 40 year old.
You won't get the future Queen wearing mini skirts or anything plunging to waist level!

TheMoth · 29/05/2023 08:34

It's a uniform though, basically. The kids I teach are always envious that I get to wear my 'own' clothes, but my work clothes aren't my normal clothes. Some of my stuff is stylish, but some is a bit on the frumpy side, as is the case when you're constrained by budget and can't wear what you'd actually like to wear.

WeAreTheHeroes · 29/05/2023 08:45

Pick, pick, pick. Bloody hell, some of you are so judgemental. I hope she doesn't read the social media stuff about her because for someone who looks lovely to absolutely stunning it's enough to give anyone a complex.

Yes, it is basically a uniform. I also wear different clothes to work than what I wear when I'm not working - my out of work clothes are "me", the work clothes are something which I might like, but never something I love, because I like to have a clear separation of me, and work-me. I would love to know what some MNers think she should be wearing!!

kerryno · 29/05/2023 09:05

I'm not quite sure why you interpreted my comment that no one I know dresses that way means everyone I know dresses the same or the only alternative to a high necked midi is leggings 😆

kerryno · 29/05/2023 09:07

I think it's fine that's she not into fashion but I guess people comment & have opinions because the press like to tell us she has amazing style. I also think there is a conversation to be had about why the role demands she dresses very conservatively, it's a bit outdated in this day & age.

Vintagejazzing · 29/05/2023 09:22

Unlike her late mother in law, Kate seems to draw a very clear line between her private and her public life. I don't think she has any interest in being a fashion icon and just wears a sort of uniform of elegant but conservative outfits to official events. In private I imagine she dresses entirely differently.
