Nanny and granny

MojacaSunset · 25/05/2023 08:12

My mil is known as Nanna and my mum is Gran..... my mum would have been Mam (that's what I called my mums mum, we are in Wales and it's the short form of mamgu) but my neice was born many years before, lived in England and called her gran so we kept it the same!

We just have a form of our names like
" Kazzer " ( not real name ) . Think that gran and grandad and similar are so out of date now .

Why out of date?

Love this. Big Dave sounds like a hoot 😂

I have a Nannie (now Nan as we're grownups) and a Grandma.

DD has 2 Nannies and a Nonna (DSGM)

JuneOsborne · 25/05/2023 09:15

Amongst my friends, there is a nonna, oma, ma (shortening of grandma that stuck) and a mutti. In addition to the grandma, nanna, nan, nanny variations. Lots to choose from!

Just be Nana/Granny/Grandma. Anything else is tryhard and a bit pathetic.

ToBeOrNotToBee · 25/05/2023 09:21

I had a Nanny Joan and a Grumps (because she is always grumpy).

Ok, I'll bite: ODFOD.

eggsandbaconeveryday · 25/05/2023 09:24

My best friends grand children call her Bissy ! Its a name that the children came up with and it has stuck . It's not even remotely like her given name either 😁

Bite what?

It's true. Farfetched names like Glam-ma smack of people who can't accept that they're grandparents.

My dad is morfar
Mum was mormor and stepdad is bedstefar.

aintnospringchicken · 25/05/2023 09:26

I used to work with a women from the Philippines and her Grandchildren called her Lola,,which I liked .

Lightningrain · 25/05/2023 09:33

I just had two Grandmas and two Granddads (if we needed to know which one we used to use Grandma + surname).

DP’s was known as Nannan but he thought it felt babyish to use that name once he was an adult so he shortened it to Nan (he also used to say he couldn’t every find birthday cards with ‘Nannan’ on so I’d think about whether it’ll bother you to have cards with one of the other diminutives if you choose something that’s not commonly used).

PlatBilledDuckypuss · 25/05/2023 09:33

DW is "Granny". Other grandmother (DD's MIL) is "Nana" and "Gran" is great grandmother (DW's mother).

HappydaysArehere · 25/05/2023 09:35

I have been nan as that was what the family called my grandmother and my mother so without any choice in the matter that was adopted for me. However my grandson has been calling me Nanna for sometime due I believe to his partner referring to me as “your nanna”. I have never minded what they call me so long as it’s with love.

Himawarigirl · 25/05/2023 09:43

My mum wanted to be called Grandma or even Grandmama I think, but we found it didn’t roll off the tongue and she quickly changed her mind to granny. So they are both Granny firstname. I think it’s a bit like nicknames, they need to evolve not be imposed. So it’s cute when a name evolves because the child came up with it or couldn’t pronounce it etc. or the grandparent is from another country and using the familiar they would there.

It really doesn’t. I’m not a grandparent, but it’s just a bit of affectionate fun.

One side my children call Granny

My Mum is called Ma (short of course for Grandma). It is Ma because my first born couldn't get the first part out so it stuck to be honest.

Leapintothelightning · 25/05/2023 10:17

My DDs call my mum Granny and MIL Nana
