My parents are Grandma and Grandpa. DH's were Grandma and Grandad briefly but are now called by their names.

I had a Granny Bett and Grandma but called my mum's DM by her name around about secondary school.

In both cases I'm not sure how the switch to using first names came about.

Yaya ( Greek for grandmother)
pappoús ( pronounced papoose, Greek for grandfather)

TroysMammy · 25/05/2023 07:02

I know someone who said she wanted to be called Glam-Ma.

We have grandma and grandad on one side and my mum is "Tay-tah". My niece and nephew say "mamma" in front of my mum's name, so for instance "Mamma Lisa"

LlynTegid · 25/05/2023 07:20

Nain was used in my family, for obvious reasons.

What’s wrong with Nanny/Grandma/Granny?

openstop · 25/05/2023 07:26

Why do you want something a little different? My mum decided on her name as "grandma" was so closely associated with her mother who passed around the time LO arrived. I would keep it simple so nana, nanny etc.

My mum announced that she only wanted to be known as Grandmother and bless her, she stuck to her guns despite multiple GC not being able to pronounce it 😂

In later years she was affectionately known as GM which was actually quite cool and cute.

My ex's great grandmother was known as GG or GiGi, also very cute.

sandgrown · 25/05/2023 07:26

I am just grandma and I love it 🥰

We had a GanGan in my family and an Oma (which is German or Dutch I think)

I had granny and oma (German)
When DD was little my default was granny because that was what I grew up with (South London). Luckily the default in Northumberland is also granny, and that is what MIL was called by her other grandchildren. Although when DD was tiny she couldn't say granny so she called her granny diddy.

scaredofpate · 25/05/2023 07:33

My son started calling my mum Gram when he was around 5. He is almost 20 now and it makes me smile when he says to his friends ' I'm off to see my Gram'!

PolliFlinders · 25/05/2023 07:33

I'm very happy to be granny.

Whatthediddlyfeck · 25/05/2023 07:35

My mum was known by the name of a flower, which was a diminutive of her actual name

MoltenLasagne · 25/05/2023 07:38

Across our extended family we have Grandma, Gammy, Amma, G-G, Nana, Nan, Nanny, Nonna and Nanny Teapot.

OhhhhhhhhBiscuits · 25/05/2023 07:50

In our family for generations Grandparents are Nanna and Grandad and great grandparents and Grandma and Grandpa. Can't imagine it ever changing.

VintedoreBay · 25/05/2023 07:52

Pop-pop and Lolly

Giggorata · 25/05/2023 07:53

I am quite envious of my Dutch DIL's parents being called Oma and Opa.
We are plain old Grandma and Grandpa.

Just not sure which name I prefer and looking for something a little different maybe ?

I wouldn’t give it too much thought. My ILs and parents nearly had a summit about it, and I can’t even remember what was decided because as soon as DS was old enough to talk, he called them all by their first names, or short forms of them!

faffadoodledo · 25/05/2023 07:57

I shall be Granny Faff (obvs insert real name there!). My mum was a granny and her mother before her. But I'd like it updated with my name added.

DustyLee123 · 25/05/2023 07:57

Nanna

inappropriateraspberry · 25/05/2023 07:58

My daughter couldn't say grandma so she is Sha Sha - it has stuck and my son uses it as well.
The Greek use YaYa a lot.

AliasGrape · 25/05/2023 07:59

I called both of mine (well 3 actually) Nana

DD calls my MIL ‘mamamar’ which is her version of Grandma but has stuck even though she can say Grandma fine now.

Friend’s little boy calls one of his grandmothers Mimi

inappropriateraspberry · 25/05/2023 08:00

I also like Grando for grandad.

blobby10 · 25/05/2023 08:03

My children had a Grandma (my mum) and a Nana. Their great grandma was Grandma then her nickname. My mum has now become Mama with an extended arrrr sound at the end (not sure how to write it phonetically!) to her youngest grandchildren. If you want something more unusual, have you had a look at what other nationalities use for names?

13Bastards · 25/05/2023 08:04

Nanny Bristol and nanny Leeds (based in where they live, bit just random cities!)
