Go down to a card shop and pick something that has several options for cards. Grannie/Granny were very limited.

I call my grandmas Granny and Mamma (pronounced mom-mar)

Workawayxx · 25/05/2023 10:51

You could always pick one of the formal names then see how DGC pronounce it. I know someone who calls her grandparents (both of them!) Gary as that’s how she said it when she was little. I think she got some funny looks at school when she was little and said “oh, Gary is picking me up today”! I also know of a gia and a mar.

My mum wanted to be grandmama.... well when tiny the kids couldn't say it and now older they just shriek with laughter and call her posh. They call her Granny. My stepdad is Grandpa.

Roseinbloom20 · 25/05/2023 15:38

Both my parents and in-laws are Nanny and Grandad and we just say "we're going to Nanny Mary's or Nanny Joan's" to differentiate but then the kids just call them Nanny and Grandad when they see them. When my youngest was very little he couldn't say Grandad so called them "Gra-ra" 😂

My mum said from the minute I told her I was pregnant that she was not being called Grandma/Granny as it's made her sound too old (she was only in her fifties to be fair!) we grew up calling our grandmothers Nanny and then just Nan once we were older.

Alarae · 25/05/2023 15:44

We have three Grandads (my dad, stepdad and FIL), one Grandma (MIL) and a Grandma/Mamaw (my mum).

My DD can say Grandma to my mum but for some reason Grandad is always DadDad (which I absolutely can't fault on logic).

FannythePinkFlamingo · 25/05/2023 15:47

I only had one as a child and she was Nana. My DC have two; one Nana, one Granny.

DacwMamYnDwad · 25/05/2023 15:48

Nain (pronounced Nine) is Welsh for Grandmother
Mam-gu (something a bit like mam-ghee) is Welsh for Grandmother in South Wales.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 25/05/2023 16:31

I’m Granny, and so is the other granny. We are identified if needed by Granny plus Name.

ArtichokeAardvark · 25/05/2023 16:34

Granny and Gumpa - hangover from when DS was tiny and couldn't say Grandpa.

Spanielsarepainless · 25/05/2023 16:34

Nonna is Italian for grandmother
Yia Yia is Greek. Pronounced ya ya I think.

Pronounced Yia Yia. Not ya ya. With emphasis on the second syllable.

JimBob61 · 24/05/2023 23:40

I'm a Nonna, it's Italian for grandmother

Me too 😊

Twospaniels · 25/05/2023 19:10

I too am going to become a grandparent in a few motnhs time!

I plan to be Nanna or Nanny and my husband will be Papa (Scottish)

My own parents were Granny and Grandad and My husband’s parents were granny and Papa (but we distinguished the granny by calling her granny scotland)

I can’t wait to be someone’s Nanna / Nanny 🥰

We've got a mash-up of 'gran' and their actual name e.g. if their name was Bob, they'd be called Granbob.

Us too

Rewis · 25/05/2023 19:11

My children called their Grandmothers ..Grandma and then their christian name .Sadly they didn’t have grandfathers.

JaninaDuszejko · 04/10/2023 21:28

In my family we have Grandma, Granny, Nana, Abuelita (Spanish speaking). I'm also quite keen on modifiers like Grannie Island or Grandma Mainland.

Lessstressedhemum · 04/10/2023 21:56

I have a friend who is called Nonnie, which is nice.
My kids called my parents Grannie and Papa when they were younger. When they grew up they called my mum G-maw, which she loved.
I never knew either of my grans. They both died before I was born but my parents always referred to them as Grannie Mums maiden name and Grannie Dad's surname.

PulaMea · 04/10/2023 22:15

My kids had a Mamaia.

I had an Oma/Savta.

PulaMea · 04/10/2023 22:16

And a Bubbe!

LunaNorth · 04/10/2023 22:19

My mum was GMa, because that’s how she used to sign her texts off, bless her.

Dowtcha · 04/10/2023 22:40

I would just use my actual name I think
