Jack Monroe and the missing money.

Anyone been following this madness? A thread popped up on my feed today about how JM asked for people to PayPal her cash donations last year to take 3 people to court for slander and libel. It’s now passed the date of when she was able to bring this to court and no sign of any money being returned.

Just seems completely bizarre to me, and now I’ve fallen down a rabbit hole and seems this is in no way the first time.

Crowdfunded exists for this very reason. She used it before. No good reason to send money to someone’s personal PayPal, none.
Now no one knows how much money she’s raised. If she gives a donation to charity there is no proof it’s the full amount or not.
It’s all dodgy behaviour. Nothing to do with ADHD. If she was that bad she could hire someone a few hours a week to keep her admin in check.

NowZeusHasLainWithLeda · 20/05/2023 10:42

I think the MH problem she has is a combination of an uncontrollable impulse to steal and lie.
Though I don't believe she has any MH problem at all tbh. It's handy for her to trot out her various diagnoses when the going gets tough though.

Boudicasbeard · 20/05/2023 10:44

She seems to lack the adult life skill of properly owning her mistakes. Instead she gets defensive and snarky like a teenager.

If you’ve fucked yo then apologise and give back as much as you can. That’s the right thing to do.

Clymene · 20/05/2023 10:48

Yeah I'd believe that @ShimmeringShirts if she had trouble turning up to things. She doesn't struggle with that, just with sending out Patreon rewards and issuing refunds.

She's a grifter

Fishisunak · 20/05/2023 10:51

I'm not sure she's ever had a formal diagnosis, her story changes about if and when she was diagnosed. She obviously has issues including uploading a stock photo of Canadian sobriety chips (inc ones for cocaine) to show how well she's doing...

ShimmeringShirts · 20/05/2023 10:58

@Clymene i don’t have a clue who she is and I’ve just gone and looked at the links and posts on this thread. General consensus seems to be she’s a con artist so I’d like to withdraw my previous comment. Being a scammer isn’t part of ADHD and I take issue with anyone trying to claim it is, life’s hard enough without being lumped in with folk like that.

Northernlurker · 20/05/2023 11:00

So many issues. Total train wreck.

Clymene · 20/05/2023 11:05

Fair enough and fwiw I totally agree with you @ShimmeringShirts. She weaponises ADHD and ASD in a way that really harms people who have them.

Sneakyblinders · 20/05/2023 11:12

The selective way she responds to things on Twitter just irks - she won't give a straight answer. That's enough for most people to start questioning!

PriamFarrl · 20/05/2023 11:15

I feel for her, to a point, she clearly struggles hugely with her mental health. But that doesn’t excuse what she has done.

HadEnough2023 · 20/05/2023 11:17

Doesn't she also have autism? Or is that another lie?

Boudicasbeard · 20/05/2023 11:20

She seems to be a Bully Bullshitter.

There may have been some truth at the beginning but it has been embroidered for sympathy and self promotion to the point where it is now utterly unbelievable.

There are people on DLA giving her money, which is disgusting.

People like Jack only exist because there are people dumber than her willing to donate money.

That she will jump on any bandwagon to be talked about and pitied "and here's my PayPal address if you want to help me sue the people who have seen through me and think I should be investiyfor fraud"
Quite bizarrely that Guardian article is one of the least critical stories about this con artist. Well worth reading the other threads about her to get the full picture of just what a scammer she is.
She also walks among us (or used to) Those threads used to be fun. Half saying "hold on a minute" and the rest saying "you're such a hero to the poor, to the single parent, to the non binary, to the autistic, to the every other label you've given yourself which then turned out to be a creation of your own".

If I remember correctly, the Guardian were the ones who were falling over themselves years ago when she first came to
light to put her in the spotlight about food and poverty!

It annoyed me as at the time I followed The Skint Foodie blogger which had been around for longer and was a genuine story of someone who appreciated (what was becoming trendy at the time) locally sourced produce, authentic/street food and no waste cooking.

All the Guardianista foodie types frothed over Jack yet TSF didn’t get much of a mention or propelled to stardom and fame for their struggles. Which is a shame as they gave genuine helpful advice to people whose circumstances had changed or were always poor yet didn’t want to eat crap processed shit and appreciated fine foods.

So yes you’re so right the Guardian are the least critical of her, I always raised an eyebrow this.

HadleyVaughn · 20/05/2023 11:45

just read the thread you linked at the OP https://twitter.com/RedSisterr/status/1657482923908505600

and my eyes are on stalks. what have I just read. The person on £69 a week benefits donnating for a lawyer pro bono. and as they point out it was payment into a general account so it looks very much like she'd have no idea on the face of it what money was for this purpose so how could she separate and donate it.

I’ve read tweets from her where she says she is self diagnosed, then others where her GP diagnosed her as a child but no one told her until she was an adult (something like hat anyway)

If she told be the sky was blue I would double check.

At one point she tried to throw her own mother under the bus by claiming she was diagnosed as a chilled but her mother hit it from her!

TheBucketWoman · 20/05/2023 11:51

Guardianista foodie types

This worst of all the foodie types.

Ostryga · 20/05/2023 11:53

She absolutely enrages me. How dare she take so much money by lying and then still be getting paid gigs?

High time the MSM picks up on this. Starting with the bloody Guardian who are almost entirely to blame for her getting so big. How she’s still able to go out and hold her head up high knowing full well she’s stolen money from people with never cease to amaze me.

OP posts:
orangeflags · 20/05/2023 11:54

She's got away with it for so many years now that I imagine her moral compass is completely skewed

BeatrixKidd · 20/05/2023 12:07

QuintanaRoo · 19/05/2023 17:40

Isn’t she the one who didn’t even grow up poor but gave the impression she did when actually she had quite a middle class upbringing?

anyway she’s a total grifter

She literally went around saying shit like "I'm a nice middle class girl, not a tracksuit-wearing chav who watches Jeremy Kyle, I'm proof anyone can fall into poverty" when she first became famous. Her entire schtick was "posh girl who fell into poverty", then she suddenly did a 180 and pretended to be from a working class background.

Give it ten minutes and she'll be claiming to be a refugee, or a survivor of the Titanic or something.

AutumnCrow · 20/05/2023 12:11

JM always irritated me. From the start she was like a "teacher's pet" type, but this time idolised by the Guardian instead of the teacher - she was nothing special, but had the right looks, lived at the right address (Brighton/London set), had a special feature (gender woo), and was in reality safely middle-class.

The Guardian attached the label 'anti-poverty campaigner' to her and that made her Teflon.

Then Katie Hopkins lost her libel case against her. The judge based his judgement of this - the supposed damage caused - largely on the persona and reputation that had been created by the Guardian. JM actually only won relatively small damages but it was the costs that really hurt Hopkins.

And then, by hurting Hopkins, JM had an extra coat of Teflon about her.

As with Murrell & Sturgeon, only a police investigation can really get underneath this.

PtarmisanCheese · 20/05/2023 12:26

I can well believe that she’s autistic, and I think she genuinely believes everything she’s saying.

I’m autistic and recognise the tenacious dig in then dig deeper way she handles things, to her detriment (I do the same, which is why I now avoid Twitter). I think too many people have treated her like a hero that deserves their money that that’s who she is now, it’s her identity, along with the confused ever changing trans status. Grifter for sure, but I’m not convinced it’s deliberate.

She reminds me of another woman I know who behaves like this then thinks the world hates her when she’s called out.

I think Jack needs someone to step in and help her step back from all of this permanently.

IntoDeepBlueSea · 20/05/2023 12:38

@PtarmisanCheese - that's a really interesting take on it, as I was about to say that from my experience, autistic people, and those with adhd, are almost pathological in their need for truth and integrity.

It's also considered a formal trait iirc. I can completely understand getting all the money, and then not being able to go through with whatever was being crowd funded, ONCE, but the mortification of using everyone's money would make sure it never happened again.
