Why don't people give boys girl's names?

Just that. Why do people think it's OK to call a girl Rory or Jamie or Michael but not to call a boy Daisy or Ada or Sylvia?

OP posts:

People don't call girls Michael.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 10/05/2023 18:12

A girl named Michael? Where?

Also, there are boys called Ashley, Sandy, Lindsay. All girls names.

Or is it just that some names are unisex and the ones you've listed aren't?

Snowtrails · 10/05/2023 18:15

Because that's a step down for a boy.

Needmorelego · 10/05/2023 18:16

The actress who played Ma Walton on The Walton's is called Michael.
She was on the credits as "Miss Micheal Learned" because they thought viewers would be confused.

Would that not be Jesse? That's the male spelling for it.

SwanUppmanship · 10/05/2023 18:18

@ehb102 Michael isn't her name. It's Marie-Christine.

Basically OP, it's seem as empowering to give a girl a male name but denigrating to do the reverse. Because men are better than women natch. Look at the popularity of the names Hilary and Lesley! They are generally female names now but started out as male.

Some people who pronounce their name "Michelle" spell it Micheal

The only girls I know called George, Chuck Michael were main characters in a TV show (Dead Like Me) (Pushing Daisies) (Star Trek) and that was to be provocative, and all three shows had the same producer (Bryan Fuller).

There's an actress called Michael Hyatt, but her real name is Charlotte and it is a nickname she used to stand out when auditioning for roles.

That's not real life, you know.

I know a lady late seventies named Michael, previously at school known as Mickey.

Kelly from Stereophonics. There's also another male singer called Kelly Finnegan. On MAFS there was a guy called Shannon. Pinks husband is called Carey. That's just off the top of my head.

An actress on ER was Michael Michele (played Cleo).

Sandy isn’t a girls name. It’s a commonly used name for Alexander.
Sandie might be used for a girl.

Puppyseahorse · 10/05/2023 18:23

Because misogyny. I think OP is referring to the new trend of boys’ names like James and Riley being used for girls. And the precedent of names like Evelyn, Lindsay, Hillary - once boys’ names, now switched to girls and can’t go back.

There are a couple of Hollywood actors who have daughters called James.
Jamie works for a girl but for some reason I don't think James works.
