Why don't people give boys girl's names?

Just that. Why do people think it's OK to call a girl Rory or Jamie or Michael but not to call a boy Daisy or Ada or Sylvia?

Calling a boy a girl's name and a girl a boy's name is the least of anyone's worries when men are turning into women and women are turning into men.

Riapia · 10/05/2023 19:54

Because giving a boy a girl’s name would be almost as ridiculous as giving a girl a boy’s name.

You’re welcome.
😉😁😁

BridgetRandomfuck · 10/05/2023 20:03

Peaches Geldof called her son Phaedra, which is the only example I can think of of a definite girls name that was not originally used for boys, unlike Shirley, Vivian and so on…

Goldenbear · 10/05/2023 20:07

My BIL abbreviated name is Josie, short for Joseph.

YoureAMeanOneMrGrinch · 10/05/2023 20:11

@CurlewKate they're Casey and Wren

MathsNervous · 10/05/2023 20:11

CelerEtAudax · 10/05/2023 18:48

John Wayne's real first name is Marion.

I was coming on to post this 🤣

CurlewKate · 10/05/2023 20:22

@Plenty of unisex names out there"

There aren't, you know. There are boy's names which are sometimes used for girls- and which fall out of favour for boys as soon as they become too closely associated with girls. Many examples on this thread- Lesley, Hilary, Joscelyn, Evelyn. I cannot think of a single girl's name that has become used for boys.

A girl named Michael? Where?

Also, there are boys called Ashley, Sandy, Lindsay. All girls names.

Or is it just that some names are unisex and the ones you've listed aren't?

These all started as boys' names or surnames (Ashley is a surname meaning a family from a place with a grove of ash trees).

Pussycatbeen · 10/05/2023 20:26

Misogyny.

HowToLearnToLoveMyself · 10/05/2023 20:27

Boy in ds class called Brogan. Only brogans i know are girls

Pussycatbeen · 10/05/2023 20:27

woodhill · 10/05/2023 19:10

Yes Sandy - Sandra Dee

Sandy and Sandra are from Alexander or Alexandra.

CurlewKate · 10/05/2023 20:29

@YoureAMeanOneMrGrinch Thank you. Interestingly, Casey is actually used more for boys than girls in the UK. Wren is definitely more girl. But neither of them are "traditional" names firmly rooted in one sex or the other. Not like calling a boy Miranda!

"Apart from Princess Michael of Kent"

Oh bless your cotton socks

I always imagined Sandy in Grease having the full name Sandra. 🤔

Yes, Rizzo sings the song “Look at me, I’m Sandra Dee.”

wiffin · 10/05/2023 20:38

Pussycatbeen · 10/05/2023 20:26

Misogyny.

This.

It's seen as a positive to aspire to being male. But not female. I remain optimistic that this will change.

SpringIntoChaos · 10/05/2023 20:40

I know a fella called Lynne...he was in my class at school, a crappy north west comp in the late 70s, so it was very much (for him 🤣) a case of 'a boy named Sue!' 😱

Vitriolinsanity · 10/05/2023 20:41

To quote the brilliant Johnnie Cash

My name is Sue, what would you do?

Princess Michael is priceless. What about Sister Michael too from Derry Girls Grin

Vitriolinsanity · 10/05/2023 20:42

@SpringIntoChaos x post

I went to school with a girl called Peter.

We also had Robin boy and Robin girl.

Vitriolinsanity · 10/05/2023 20:43

If my mother had called me Dave in a v sign to misogyny I'd have killed her dead.

Usernamaste · 10/05/2023 20:44

Nanananananana99 · 10/05/2023 20:36

Yes, Rizzo sings the song “Look at me, I’m Sandra Dee.”

Rizzo was referring to the actress Sandra Dee in that song and comparing her to Sandy as a pisstake, rather than it being a song about Sandy herself. Sandy’s name is Sandy Olsson, and the film never specifies what Sandy is short for.
Sandra Dee’s full name was Alexandra though.

chickbean · 10/05/2023 20:44

I know a boy Darcey, which I would usually think was a girl's name.

Newname2323 · 10/05/2023 20:45

I'd say the names both girls and boys are called are unisex. Lilly isn't unisex, for example.

CurlewKate · 10/05/2023 20:47

@wiffin "t's seen as a positive to aspire to being male. But not female. I remain optimistic that this will change."
So do I. Getting a bit difficult to cling to the optimism after 40 years, though....

@Newname2323 "I'd say the names both girls and boys are called are unisex." But they are all originally boy's names. Why does a girl's name never become unisex?

I briefly dated a guy called Lyn. He was Welsh and its a common Welsh boys name.
