Why don't people give boys girl's names?

Just that. Why do people think it's OK to call a girl Rory or Jamie or Michael but not to call a boy Daisy or Ada or Sylvia?

Patinkin sorry. Miss spelt.
Right off to Google Carol Reed....

It’s definitely a phenomenon, and I suppose it’s similar to tomboys being cool and girly boys still not. Femaleness and femininity are stigmatised.

I actually love Gale for a boy, but my (male) partner is vetoing it for any future male offspring. It’s funny because in some ways it seems a very ‘masculine’ name in meaning and sound to me, but I guess the gender stereotypes outweigh that in most people’s hearing of it.

grapehyacinthisactuallyblue · 10/05/2023 19:15

You can, if you wanted to, I think, there aren't any law to prevent you from it?

My ex bf had a girl name, not in this country though. And he said he hated his name when he was younger, he was bullied and ridiculed. By the time I met him, it was in UNI, so people were more mature and appreciate the difference. But it's quite heartbreaking to think about what he had to go through as a child.

Dubaibutwhy · 10/05/2023 19:16

My DP is called Barbara. It really suits him.

loislovesstewie · 10/05/2023 19:19

But it was originally Carol for a boy and Carole for a girl. And Rory is a boys name, saying it's a diminutive for Aurora doesn't turn it into the male name. Rory means red king. And it's always been Leslie /Lesley. Jamie is short for James. And I agree no one would call their son Sue.

People don't call girls Michael.

Oh yes they do. My sister is called Michael. She hated it when she was a child but loves it now.
The bass player from the Bangles is called Michael as well.

LakeTiticaca · 10/05/2023 19:45

Why would anyone want to subject their son to a life time of piss taking?

seventyfour75 · 10/05/2023 19:46

PinkButtercups · 10/05/2023 19:01

@seventyfour75 Why?

I also know a Shannon and a Courtney, I was wondering your region?

CurlewKate · 10/05/2023 19:47

@LakeTiticaca "Why would anyone want to subject their son to a life time of piss taking?"

But why is being a girl called Rory OK but being a boy called Daisy an invitation to piss taking?

Would you mind sharing at least one of them?

Jamie isn't a boys name.

It's used for both sexes and nowadays even just the usual spelling.

Never heard of Rory for a girl or Michael.

Seen boys called Kelly, Leslie, Jesse/Jessie

Plenty of unisex names out there

Puppyseahorse · 10/05/2023 19:50

ThatFraggle · 10/05/2023 18:25

Have you heard of a girl called James irl?

I have, but in America.

chouxfleur · 10/05/2023 19:50

LakeTiticaca · 10/05/2023 19:45

Why would anyone want to subject their son to a life time of piss taking?

So a boy would get teased for having a girl's name, but would a girl be teased as much for having a boy's name like Sam or James?

And why do you think that would be?
