Why don't people give boys girl's names?

Just that. Why do people think it's OK to call a girl Rory or Jamie or Michael but not to call a boy Daisy or Ada or Sylvia?

I used to know a lovely old lady called John.

Lost her during Covid🙁

SOMumm · 10/05/2023 18:30

Sam or Rowan could swing either way : there must be more ?

Lionel Shriver self chosen.
For names, my favourite is Mr and Mrs Lear naming their baby girl Shanda.

I knew a male Kelly at secondary school (80s/90s). It always confused me because I saw it as a girl's name and there were probably half a dozen female Kelly's in my year.

Whichclubisittonight · 10/05/2023 18:31

I used to work with a Kim and a Lynn, both male (and I know they are both unisex, but they are more typically female names).

I don’t think its a lazy thread, I think the OP’s point is that, like others have said, it’s seen as empowering to give a girl a "boy’s" name, but would feel "sissy" to give a boy a girls name (I don’t think that by the way, but I still wouldn’t do it because I would worry about bullying from those who might think that).

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 10/05/2023 18:32

My cousin is a boy and his nickname is "Daisy"

Needmorelego · 10/05/2023 18:33

Lionel Shriver is actually Margaret Ann. No offense to any Lionel's out there but if you are going to choose a male name why would you use one as blahhh as 'Lionel' ?

CurlewKate · 10/05/2023 18:42

@ThePinkQualityStreet It's a bit shit-lazy not to check- Jesse is a biblical male name.

There are only about 50 babies called Aiva in the UK of either sex- it's hardly representative.

Don't know the actor- but if he has been given a woman's name well done his practically unique parents!

I never thought of Jamie as a boys' name, I always considered it unisex, so wouldn't think a girl called Jamie had a boys' name. Same with Ashley, it's unisex, or Casey, or Mickey.

Rory also, I don't purely consider a boys' name. You can have Aurora for a girl, and Rory is a nickname for that, therefore why couldn't Rory just be unisex anyway.

Sam too. Short for Samuel or Samantha, but can just be given as it is as a unisex name.

And as we have seen upthread, there is disagreement about whether a name is seen as masculine or feminine. Sandy to me has always been a feminine name, I associate it with the names Sandra and Cassandra, but it is unisex.

I know both a Shannon & Courtney (boys).

Not sure why you're getting so agitated in your response to others though. If you can have or have a boy, break the cycle if you wish.

People don't call girls Michael.

Wasn't the actress in the Waltons given that name, I thought it was really odd

TheBirdintheCave · 10/05/2023 18:56

I love how people are mentioning men who have originally male names which have since been co-opted by parents of girls (Kim, Ashley, Hilary etc) as examples of them having female names 🤷🏻‍♀️

Plump82 · 10/05/2023 18:22

Kelly from Stereophonics. There's also another male singer called Kelly Finnegan. On MAFS there was a guy called Shannon. Pinks husband is called Carey. That's just off the top of my head.

Was he from the Isle of Man😀

I'm sure it was traditionally a man's name

JuneShitfield · 10/05/2023 18:58

There’s a Michael Michele too, she was in ER and Dynasty.

midsomermurderess · 10/05/2023 18:59

Re a previous poster, Sandy is, or can be, short for Alexander, and Lindsay wouldn"t raise eyebrows if used on a boy in Scotland

WheelsUp · 10/05/2023 19:00

wasacasa · 10/05/2023 18:23

Sandy isn’t a girls name. It’s a commonly used name for Alexander.
Sandie might be used for a girl.

I always imagined Sandy in Grease having the full name Sandra. 🤔

TheBirdintheCave · 10/05/2023 19:01

@woodhill Yep all of those are traditionally male names.

I think the only two I can come up with which might possibly (as I can't vouch for Brazilian naming conventions) be genuine girls names on boys are the brothers Alisson and Muriel Becker who are footballers.

PinkButtercups · 10/05/2023 19:01

@seventyfour75 Why?

Could any of the Mels be Melvyn ?

Needmorelego · 10/05/2023 19:03

Mel Brooks is Melvin.
Mel Smith Is Melvyn.
Mel Gibson is just Mel.
(I literally just googled it 🤣)

Needmorelego · 10/05/2023 19:05

Mandy Pankin is Mandel.
