Do you make your own burger buns?

We've guests coming over at the weekend and DH has said he wants to make it as easy as possible for me so he will cook on the bbq. Oh, but could I make some buns for the burgers because homemade will surely be nicer than shop bought!

Never made buns before so.... what recipe do you use and what flour is best? And what else do I need to know? Can I make them the night before or is same day best?

Just buy some nice ones from a bakery. Life's too short to make burger buns.

Brrrrrrrrrrrr · 10/05/2023 11:06

Why would you set yourself up for so much faff when M&S do amazing ones? Life is too short

Corriebobs · 10/05/2023 11:06

are you mad of course not

Just buy some burger buns from the shop life is too short for faffing about baking buns for burgers. If DH wants home made DH can make them.

CoronationKicking · 10/05/2023 11:11

Tell him to fuck off. He can make the burger buns, the salads, set the table, buy the ingredients, serve drinks, tidy up and you can "man" the BBQ.

He wants you to have it easy after all

ReviewingTheSituation · 10/05/2023 11:13

I'm a keen bread maker, but absolute hard no to making burger buns! There are some things life is too short for, and that's one of them.

MintyIguana · 10/05/2023 11:14

Buy the buns. Is he hoping to stand and hold the tongs and a beer while you do all the hard work then he takes the credit for the bbq?

thedogisstaring · 10/05/2023 11:15

OP. Sod that! Go to the shop, buy some and then have a nice glass of vino with the time you've saved not baking buns!

makemineadoublee · 10/05/2023 11:15

Just buy them

or tell your dp he can make them if he so wishes

RJnomore1 · 10/05/2023 11:16

Do I what??????

SuperABunDance · 10/05/2023 11:16

@ReviewingTheSituation why? Is it that much harder than a loaf of bread?

Honestly no. I often bake bread but even I'd just buy buns for burgers. Tesco do some lovely brioche ones.

Zwicky · 10/05/2023 11:16

I make loads of bread and sometimes make buns. I don’t think they are great for a bbq tbh. Too dense for that sort of meal. I would buy “nice” burger buns rather than make them on the basis of suitability, even though I would have to go out whereas I can make buns in the house with storecupboard ingredients without having to put my coat on. Aldi’s “floury” buns are really nice.

kissthegirlshesnotbehindthedoor · 10/05/2023 11:18

He wants to make it as easy as possible (for him). Just go buy some fancy brioche buns!

MintyIguana · 10/05/2023 11:20

While you are waiting for your dough to prove you should start grinding the spices for your marinades.

Goodoccasionallypoor · 10/05/2023 11:21

I think some context is important here - op, do you regularly make bread?

I don't know anyone who makes burger buns, even friends who make loaves at least once a week, have never made buns at any bbq I've been to.

😂😂😂

Cameraduck · 10/05/2023 11:23

I have made burger buns before as shop ones are always brioche & too sweet, but apart from sweetness, they were, you know, buns. They were fine, but not something to write home about. If you want to I think I found a recipe on bbc food.
but seriously, buy them. And all the side salads. Not too much work my arse.

midgemadgemodge · 10/05/2023 11:24

Yes make them the day before

Yes it's a lot of effort - a lot more than making and cooking burgers and salads so unfair labour division

We normally would make them - our standard white loaf recipe

If buying try and get good quality without the crap in cheaper bread ( so just flour yeast water salt sungai on the ingredients list )

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 10/05/2023 11:26

If we’re having burgers normally I make my standard rolls but for a bbq I would buy proper ones because they’re bigger and softer and easier to eat- the fillings would fall out and you don’t want that if you’re a guest.
If I was going to make them I wouldn’t bother unless it could be literally just before so they were super fresh- shop bought ones would be better than ones made the day before.
On balance I wouldn’t bother.

And treading grapes for their wine 🤣

ThreeRingCircus · 10/05/2023 11:50

I've made them once and they're too faffy in my opinion for a BBQ. They're nice if you were having a sandwich but too dense for a burger....shop bought ones are totally fine!

I make my own bread a lot but burger buns, no. Life's too short. Make some pasta or potato salad instead!

CatOnTheChair · 10/05/2023 11:52

Yes, I used to. But only because the bread in the country we lived in was plastic crap stuffed with preservatives.
It's a labour of love, and no way I'd be doing it for a BBQ in the UK.
Although those Josh Wiseman ones above are absolutely amazing

NoTouch · 10/05/2023 11:55

DH has said he wants to make it as easy as possible for me so he will cook on the bbq.

Aw that's nice..... Is he doing all the planning, buying and prep or just standing at the BBQ and taking the credit?
