Do you make your own burger buns?

SuperABunDance · 10/05/2023 11:02

We've guests coming over at the weekend and DH has said he wants to make it as easy as possible for me so he will cook on the bbq. Oh, but could I make some buns for the burgers because homemade will surely be nicer than shop bought!

Never made buns before so.... what recipe do you use and what flour is best? And what else do I need to know? Can I make them the night before or is same day best?

Aw that's nice..... Is he doing all the planning, buying and prep or just standing at the BBQ and taking the credit?

This.

Good grief OP, unless you have gazillions of time on your hands, get thee to M&S.

WinterinArabia · 10/05/2023 11:59

Why would you do this ? 😂
buy them and tell your dh you baked them

CharlotteDoyle · 10/05/2023 12:00

No.

I have never heard of anyone doing this and very much doubt that any of your guests would notice or appreciate it if you did. Without you specifically calling it out. Which would make you seem weird.

That said, plain white buns are probably pretty easy to make if you're a reasonably experienced baker?

He says he will do all the prep. I told him I need an itemised list for the shop. I do make bread at the weekends (not every, but many) and but think my normal recipe will be too heavy for buns.
I'll try that link, thanks.

Only if he is doing home made sausages and burgers, including mincing the meat himself, and is personally choosing a chicken to pluck and prepare.

SoupDragon · 10/05/2023 12:02

I do, but only because I have a breadmaker to do all the dough work.

LudicrouslyCapaciousBag · 10/05/2023 12:09

I’m a very good baker and I wouldn’t do this. Burger buns need to be soft which means faffing around with an enriched dough and / or steam. Home-made bread rolls have a crunchy crust and don’t work with burgers.

JuneOsborne · 10/05/2023 12:11

Our favourite buns are the hovis pretzel style. I don't think I could make them as good as hovis do!

Seems like a lot of faff.

MidgeHardcastle · 10/05/2023 12:13

When I hear of a dh who says he's 'doing' a bbq it always reminds me of these rules🤣

Google ‘Ted’s Rolls’ recipe - works great every single time

SchoolTripDrama · 10/05/2023 12:35

I've made bread many, many times but I've never once succeeded at bread buns! I'm presuming the burgers aren't going to be hand-butchered by him? From cattle raised in your back garden?!

Ignore the lazy posters OP and go for it!

Josh Weissman never fails:

I beg your pardon? There's no need for name calling!! I'm not lazy I just don't waste my time on buns! I make bread regularly thank you very much!!!

Cameraduck · 10/05/2023 11:23

I have made burger buns before as shop ones are always brioche & too sweet, but apart from sweetness, they were, you know, buns. They were fine, but not something to write home about. If you want to I think I found a recipe on bbc food.
but seriously, buy them. And all the side salads. Not too much work my arse.

Warburtons sliced buns aren't sweet as they're not brioche.

CoronationKicking · 10/05/2023 12:41

There are loads of burger buns in shops that aren't brioche. You'll find them next to the brioche buns

Doveyouknow · 10/05/2023 12:43

I make them sometimes using a normal bread recipe (so strong white flour, yeast, warm water, oil and salt). It's fairly straightforward and relatively quick - 2hrs max including rising time. I would make them on the day as they taste better fresh. However if I can't be bothered or don't have time then shop bought are fine.

Brrrrrrrrrrrr · 10/05/2023 12:47

You should get DH to dig up some coal for the BBQ. Homemined coal flames are more authentic, adds a little je ne sais quoi to the experience.

742EvergreenTerrace · 10/05/2023 12:58

I’m crying at some of these responses.

are these particularly important guests who deign to eat anything shop bought?

ReviewingTheSituation · 10/05/2023 13:14

SuperABunDance · 10/05/2023 11:16

@ReviewingTheSituation why? Is it that much harder than a loaf of bread?

Not harder, but all the faff... the shaping, the proving, the hoping they turn out OK, the having to give space up for them whilst they hang around, the remembering to put them in the oven, the checking that they're cooked.... and so on.

There's enough to do if you want a fancy BBQ without adding homemade buns into the mix. If you want to impress, make some nice salads/sides, or a nice relish, or sauce. Or a homemade pud. All of which will likely be much more appreciated than homemade buns.

TheChosenTwo · 10/05/2023 13:18

Dd always makes our burger buns, I’ve done it before when she wasn’t here and I’m rubbish in the kitchen. Followed the recipe, was well worth the effort.
Something like burgers on the bbq is simple (and a bit boring frankly so we make our own burgers too) so it’s nice to have the components well made!
We make them on the day otherwise they are a bit stale then next day, fine though if you’re going to toast them I guess.
Having said all that, if you just want to buy them then just buy them, literally no one would care!!

FusionChefGeoff · 10/05/2023 13:20

I disagree with his statement - burger buns are much nicer if they are soft and it's nigh on impossible to bake soft bread at home. Crunchy crust burger rolls are horrid.

Highdaysandholidays1 · 10/05/2023 13:22

Do you want to spend time making buns? If so, do it. If not, don't.

What your husband wants is immaterial. Most people use shop-bought buns anyway, have never had a home-made burger bun and have eaten a lot of burgers. My friends make bread for home-made soup, usual loaves etc, but not burgers/BBQs.

MondayYogurt · 10/05/2023 13:24

Hate brioche ones (why does everything need to be sweet?) but have found Lancashire Oven Bottom Muffins a great substitute. Sainsburys stock them.

Comedycook · 10/05/2023 13:25

As easy as possible for you 😂just buy some brioche buns from the supermarket.

If you don't want them crunchy just put a damp tea towel over as they cool, the steam softens the tops, I do this for burger buns, using a fairly standard strong flour, yeast, milk/water, oil, bread mix. I do the same if I want a soft crust loaf.

MegaClutterSlut · 10/05/2023 13:32

Tell him to make them himself the CF 😂 and no I don't make my own buns, sod that
