We've guests coming over at the weekend and DH has said he wants to make it as easy as possible for me so he will cook on the bbq. Oh, but could I make some buns for the burgers because homemade will surely be nicer than shop bought!

Never made buns before so.... what recipe do you use and what flour is best? And what else do I need to know? Can I make them the night before or is same day best?

Nobody wants a crusty homemade burger bun, they need to be soft

CurlewKate · 10/05/2023 16:37

I always make my own burger buns. I'll give you the recipe if you like, but once you've had home made you'll never want bought ones again so be warned!

Disagree with this , to me brioche with burgers is a recent thing and not proper , give me a plain white roll and some sesame seeds at a push any day

To be fair, I only ever have a half as I find them a bit sickly.

Homemade pitta and naan, that's a different kettle of fish!

Life is too short for making burger buns. Especially so if you have never made them before and they are intended for guests - way too much pressure to get them right. I highly recommend the scotch rolls from the Co-Op.

Much easier to make the actual burgers - which is dead easy

IDontWantToBeAPie · 10/05/2023 17:38

Lol men always think doing the meat makes it easy and like being praised for doing the cooking when they're wife has sorted all the sides, drinks, crockery, sauces, salads etc

IDontWantToBeAPie · 10/05/2023 17:43

Their* even

IDontWantToBeAPie · 10/05/2023 17:44

They do look nice Op. but if they're hard they'll be odd with burgers.

Also - now not only are you baking, you've baked a trial run, made a post asking how to do it etc. he's hardly saved you effort has he.

MaggieFS · 10/05/2023 17:45

I sometimes make my own burgers but buns is a step too far!! Easy my ass.

SlipperyLizard · 10/05/2023 17:45

I see you already have a recipe @SuperABunDance but this is my go to burger bun recipe, not hard to make and so much better than the shop bought ones!

Fuck that noise.

While you're at it, make some handmade soap for them to wash their hands with. And weave a doormat for a more homely welcome.

Add in some homemade paper for napkins. If you keep some bees, you can get some homemade honey too for the ice-cream you make from scratch. And use the wax for some homemade candles for the birthday cake too.

The table should be home crafted. Obviously you'll only serve your own home-brewed beer and cider

Then churn some butter for the rolls. Grow some cress for the salad. And the photos you take, develop the film yourself in the cupboard under the stairs.

Sew some matching Von Trapp style outfits for you all.

If you get up at 4am tomorrow and get cracking, you'll be ready for the weekend.

LynetteScavo · 10/05/2023 18:27

Handmade coleslaw, potato salad, burgers, guacamole, etc

But buy the buns and ketchup.

Crunchymum · 10/05/2023 18:35

I apologise as I never got beyond the first post.

How is expecting you to make burgers buns making your life any easier?

Paloma66 · 10/05/2023 18:44

No. Does anyone?

May as well, especially as her husband is making the whole occasion so much easier for her by kindly offering to man the barbecue.

Ha ha ha bong.

Laughing my head off at this.

Just buy some decent ones, we like M&S and dispose of the wrapping. Maybe wrap in a clean teatowel to keep them fresh. Warm a tad in the oven

Produce them at the right moment and never mention making them again

Is he going to make all the other things, too. Or just BBQ meat you produce, alongside sides and claim the credit for 'making it easy for you?'

W*nker.

Comedycook · 10/05/2023 18:54

Oh and even if you do make the sodding burger buns, the guests won't thank you for it...but your dh will be fawned over and praised endlessly for managing to grill the meat.

Schoolchoicesucks · 10/05/2023 19:03

Don't do this. Make a marinade or sauce for the burgers, or an amazing salad. No-one will notice the buns.

ilovemydogmore · 12/05/2023 10:51

They look wonderful @SuperABunDance ! How were they?

SuperABunDance · 12/05/2023 11:12

Thanks, they were fine although I thought they were a bit too sweet.
