Do you make your own burger buns?

We've guests coming over at the weekend and DH has said he wants to make it as easy as possible for me so he will cook on the bbq. Oh, but could I make some buns for the burgers because homemade will surely be nicer than shop bought!

Never made buns before so.... what recipe do you use and what flour is best? And what else do I need to know? Can I make them the night before or is same day best?

A proper burger bun is a brioche or enriched dough, so quite sweet and with egg. You will also need dry fry the cut side to get that crispy caramel crunch. You'll need at least two proves.

If you bake bread regularly, you'll be grand, if not, maybe experiment with no guests.

Just get some nice ones from an artisan bakery.

"Just get some nice ones from an artisan bakery."

Or just go to Asda like a normal person 🤣

Funny how it's often the men who offer to do the bbqing- like women can't handle the flames!!!!

I do, but only because I want to. I do addb butter and an egg to get lovely soft buns.

I’m not sure I’d bother for a crowd if I had a decent alternative.

I live in Forrin and the bread here can be a bit sweet.

fruitpastille · 10/05/2023 13:44

I would do homemade burgers rather than buns.

Some homemade bread might be nice as extra if you normally make it.

TheKobayashiMaru · 10/05/2023 13:45

I just buy them.

mazylou · 10/05/2023 13:46

That Japanese milk roll looks fantastic, bookmarked! I bake bread all the time, and I agree it's a faff to get the buns precisely even, so for more than us me and DP, I'd buy them. Although if you want a simple slightly enriched recipe, you can't go wrong with this:

He’s a joke(r).

Mutabiliss · 10/05/2023 13:52

Hahahaha no. Does anyone, in real life?! It's not just to buy burger buns 🙄 Just like it's not lazy to buy burgers, or bread, or salad. It's just normal life.

Home made burgers will make much more of a difference than home made buns IMO. I just buy some soft rolls with sourdough (not sourdough rolls) form Waitrose, with the added advantage that they’re currently on offer 😀

I make all sorts of bread regularly and often make burger buns. I have all the stuff I need and it's no harder than making an ordinary loaf.

If you're not sure about how to do it and have got to go out and buy all the ingredients then I would say don't bother, you might as well just buy the buns!

Comedycook · 10/05/2023 14:39

Some things are worth making from scratch and some things are not... burger buns are the latter.

SoupDragon · 10/05/2023 15:21

Crunchy crust burger rolls are horrid.

Not if they are fresh from the oven they aren't.

Fadedstripes · 10/05/2023 15:26

@PurposefulBear not just mincing but rearing, that lazy husband should be hand rearing all the pigs and cows himself. If lamb is involved I hope he has rounded them up in a sheepdog costume.

exactly this. It's straying into the realms of things people only ever make from scratch on Bake Off. He'll be demanding home made kitkats and marshmallow teacakes next.

Cas112 · 10/05/2023 15:29

Just buy some😂

I would say making your own is a bit OTT

Aldi do lovely plain and seeded brioche buns

ODFOx · 10/05/2023 15:55

Burgers?

Wouldn't a marinated butterflied lamb leg be nicer?
Flatbreads are much easier to make than burger buns.

Disagree with this , to me brioche with burgers is a recent thing and not proper , give me a plain white roll and some sesame seeds at a push any day

Rayna37 · 10/05/2023 16:12

Is he making the burgers and salads from scratch? Buns would be bottom of the list most people would want/appreciate/expect to be home made at a BBQ, I can only think of one thing below them (ketchup)!

AnonymousHippopotamus · 10/05/2023 16:13

He wants to 'make it as easy as possible for you' but he's asking you to make something you've never made before. Sod that for a game of soldiers. Tell him you will, but you'll need hand-ground flour to make it really good rolls, and grinding wheat is a man's job Hmm

Furthermore, everyone knows the best bread is sourdough and you'll need several weeks/months/years to develop a starter he'll be happy with.

Greenfree · 10/05/2023 16:17

I only have brioche burger buns now so would instead focus on making some nice sides and kebabs. I like making bread but wouldn't attempt brioche buns. There also nice if you toast on the BBQ and serve with ice cream or gelato 😋
