Can you smell heat/cold?

I don't really have a sense of smell at all, but my dc just came in and said "it smells warm in here", I questioned further and apparently hot and cold have distinctive smells?

Is this a thing? Can people smell temperature, or is my dc weird?

That's so odd to me 🤣

What does it smell like?

MorrisZapp · 28/04/2023 13:00

Absolutely. Hot and cold water smell completely different.

SpringOn · 28/04/2023 13:02

Yes
cold is kind of sharp and metallic

Hot is softer. Thicker.

very hard to describe!

😮 I'm in my mid 40s and have never heard this before.

This is blowing my mind.

Yes. And weirdly I hate the smell of washing dried outdoors. Too strong.

HinCogNeetOh · 28/04/2023 13:08

Snow is metallic, like how copper might smell. As I said, weirdo. Or maybe not!

GreyCarpet · 28/04/2023 13:09

Yes. I can smell when it's going to snow and I can smell when the seasons have changed too. I go by that rather than dates tbh.

Lemondrizzlerain · 28/04/2023 13:09

I've recently discovered the taste of plain hot water is really different to plain cold water.

I can smell the air when the radiators are on. (Not dusty, but definitely different!)

And obviously the smell of rain!

Comefromaway · 28/04/2023 13:09

Yes I can.

SpringOn · 28/04/2023 13:10

Oooh I am glad it’s not just me 😂

This! It's difficult to put into words, but that's pretty close.

The only difference is heat in the desert smells different to heat at home. It's sharper.

Yes, this.

Maybe it's to do with the humidity too? I don't know. Might be why water smells different if cold/hot - I'd never thought about that before but it does.

cushioncovers · 28/04/2023 13:11

Yes.

Same!

ChiChaNaYubi · 28/04/2023 13:12

Yes. Even when I had Covid and couldn’t smell anything I could still smell hot and cold.

Arewehumanorarewecupboards · 28/04/2023 13:12

Only outside and I think it’s the ground.

I can smell when one of the dc is getting a cold though 😂 ‘you smell poorly’ was a said often when they were school age.

TokyoSushi · 28/04/2023 13:12

Oh yes, very much so, especially hot, soft & thick is right! When we had the mega heatwave last year the smell was so strong!

HowDoYouDoWhatYouDoToMeIWishIKnew · 28/04/2023 13:12

I can't believe this.

I thought my dc was joking.

I feel like there's a whole world I've been missing out on 🤣

I’m 47 and this is brand new information to me as well, OP!
mind you I can’t smell the rain or tell what line dried washing smells of either…

Crazymadchickenlady · 28/04/2023 13:14

Yes I agree I can smell hot and cold and when the heating is on and I agree cold is quite sharp and metallic and hot is a kind of thick, stuffy smell. Snow definitely has a metallic smell too. Rain smells different to snow.

I wasn't sure how to describe the difference, but this explains it.

@violetscarlet I feel the same about washing that's been dried outside too. No matter where it's dried outside, at my house or in friends or families homes it leaves it with a smell I can only describe as cat wee

AtomicBlondeRose · 28/04/2023 13:17

I can smell the first time the central heating goes on. I assume it's dust on the radiators or something but it's always been the same in any building.
