Can you smell heat/cold?

I don't really have a sense of smell at all, but my dc just came in and said "it smells warm in here", I questioned further and apparently hot and cold have distinctive smells?

Is this a thing? Can people smell temperature, or is my dc weird?

Absolutely. Hot and cold water smell completely different.

I’ve got a temperamental bath tap and can tell if it’s running hot or cold by the smell of the water.

CharlotteDoyle · 28/04/2023 13:17

Hang on, all you temperature-smellers: are you talking about hot & cold in terms of outside temperature, or hot & cold in general? I think most people would acknowledge that a warm spring day and a cool autumn day have different aromas but I guess that would be down to the plants mostly. And different weather definitely has different smells (rain, snow, wind). But I can't get my head around temperatures themselves having distinct smells. Intriguing!

Comefromaway · 28/04/2023 13:23

I can walk into a room and think it smells cold (or hot) in here.

Newuser82 · 28/04/2023 13:23

I think I can smell hot and cold too. Also would agree with hot and cold water. I love the smell of rain too.

ChristmasKraken · 28/04/2023 13:26

You can also hear the difference in hot and cold water... There's some science behind why, which I saw on a kids science show 😂 but if someone pours water, you'll know from the sound if its boiling or cold.

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 28/04/2023 13:33

Hot smells thick.

I can smell illness on DS which DH finds really freaky. I'll notice the smell and tell DH that DS is ill, both of them will tell me he's fine then the next day, bam, he's ill.

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 28/04/2023 13:35

Cold smells empty.

CoolCalmCollected · 28/04/2023 13:39

Yes I can too; both indoors and outdoors.

Smaram · 28/04/2023 13:41

Yes definitely different smells. Nighttime and daytime have different smells and so do different seasons to me.

I can smell the first time the central heating goes on. I assume it's dust on the radiators or something but it's always been the same in any building.

I was going to say I can smell when radiators are on, regardless of which house I'm in. I can smell the seasons outside too but think that's quite normal. It smelt very autumnal the other day (which is depressing).

SpringIntoChaos · 28/04/2023 13:47

Definitely OP, they smell entirely different.

SirenSays · 28/04/2023 13:53

Yes there's definitely a smell. Cold doesn't smell metallic to me though.
I can tell hot and cold water apart but idk how. The smell obviously but I don't know what they smell like to describe it. I think this thread has broken my brain.

Breathmiller · 28/04/2023 13:56

How interesting. DS11 came out of school today and also said it smells warm today. And as soon as he said I knew what he meant. It does smell warm. He also said it smells like "Jack's birthday". Jack is a friend thst has a birthday at this time of year.

UsingChangeofName · 28/04/2023 13:59

Yes.
Sometimes one of my (adult) dc come in and they smell of cold, from being outside.

Toooldtocareanymore · 28/04/2023 14:02

I can smell lots of hot smells, (not cold, I can smell if fridge door open from a long distance away, but that the smell of the fridge I think not the temperature), hot I smell, if I walk into a room and the iron is on I can smell it from the other side of the room, I can tell if the pc / PlayStation etc has just been turned off as I smell heat off it. On holidays when every day is hot I can smell if it will be hotter or cooler than day before.
I nearly always smelt if kids were getting poorly that involved them running a temperature, especially if it was something like an ear infection , to such an extend after bringing child to doctor be told they were fine and them being ill next day, after a few times the doctor then just accepted my word.

CubeMorphine · 28/04/2023 14:04

Definitely. And I can hear the difference between hot water and cold water when they're running, AND tell how hot and how cold they are.

HowDoYouDoWhatYouDoToMeIWishIKnew · 28/04/2023 14:26

I can't believe this is actually a thing 🤣 it's wild to me.

The more you know.....

No, but I can smell it’s going to rain before it does

cocksstrideintheevening · 28/04/2023 14:30

Yes definitely

ALongHardWinter · 28/04/2023 15:07

I can smell heat. Don't ask me to describe how!

DMCWelshcakes · 28/04/2023 16:04

Yes. Can't describe it properly though.

AmberGer · 28/04/2023 16:14

I think I know what they mean.

Also, if someone held me in captivity, depraved of light and time then took me outside blindfolded and other methods whatever it took so I couldn't feel what the temperature was, I'd know what season it was because of the smell.
They are all very distinctively different.

NameChange647 · 28/04/2023 16:16

I can't smell cold but I can smell hot. I can also smell hot water and when they heating is on.

OldTinHat · 28/04/2023 16:21

Yes, I can too.

HowDoYouDoWhatYouDoToMeIWishIKnew · 28/04/2023 16:27

I can't even tell you all how shocked I am.

Truly a revelation.
